The Russian national figure skating team won silver at the World Team Championship in Tokyo, Japan, despite two new world records and the highest number of points earned by two-time world champion in women's singles Evgenia Medvedeva.

The Russians scored 105 points in total, the first place was taken by the Japanese team (109), the third - by the Americans (97). The victory in each of the two programs of each type was evaluated by 12 points and then in descending order. The sum of points for the results of both programs was not even officially calculated. Medvedeva won the maximum possible 24 points for her team.

Era Medvedeva

The world champion first set a new world record in the short program, gaining 80.85 points (the previous one - 79.21 - belonged to her and was set in the Grand Prix Final in Marseille). The Russian woman completed all the elements with a plus, and for the cascade "triple flip - triple sheepskin coat" she received from the judges a solid maximum "+3" according to the GOE (Grade of execution) system. For the components, the skater did not receive a single recorded score below 9 points on a 10-point system. "The era of Medvedeva is now absolute," the figure skater's coach-choreographer Ilya Averbukh reacted to what was happening.

Elena Radionova, who has been in the current season for a long time, did not perform in the short starting combination "Lutz - sheepskin coat", which let her down at the Russian Championship in Chelyabinsk, but made a separate lutz, and in the second half of the program - a high-quality "rittberger - sheepskin coat", a more expensive combination than "lutz - sheepskin coat". The result - 72.21 points, the second position and 11 points for the national team. Japan's Mai Mihara caught on third place, lagging behind Radionova by 11 hundredths of a point.

Free skate for women was the culmination of the tournament. By that time, the Russians were in third place with 85 points in the asset, three points behind the Japanese and one behind the Americans. Averbukh's words were again confirmed on the ice. Medvedeva received 160.46 points from the judges (154.40 - the previous record, which was set by the same skater at the World Championships in Helsinki). If you add up the total points, then the Russian woman would have recorded another historical achievement, but only each of the programs is officially counted at the World Team Championship.

All 12 elements of the winner's program were rated exclusively at "+2" and "+3", not a single judge dared to give even "+1" to Medvedeva. “In the pre-Olympic years, it increases the gap not only technically, but also psychologically. These are very important things,” Tatyana Tarasova, Honored Coach of Russia, shared her impressions of Medvedeva’s skates.

Mai Mihara was 14.5 points behind to finish second, with Wakaba Higuchi third. Both figure skaters thus brought gold to the Japanese team. Radionova coped with the starting cascade "lutz - sheepskin coat", but made mistakes during the execution of the triple lutz and double axel. The result is fifth place.

A little before that, the Russian sports couple, the bronze medalists of the last world championship Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, became the second in the free program, gaining 142.38 points. The first place was taken by the French Vanessa James and Morgan Sipre, the third - the Chinese Peng Cheng / Jin Yang.

A day earlier, the Russians were fourth in the short program, allowing marriage on a parallel triple sheepskin coat and a triple rittberger throw (66.37 points, 9 points). “It just didn’t work. It’s clear that the end of the season. But these are more technical errors than just fatigue,” Tarasova explained. James/Cipre won the short program, Peng Cheng/Jin Yang took second place, and Canada's Kirsten Moore-Towers/Michael Marinaro took third place.

“Of course, we had the peak of form at the World Championships,” Tarasova’s partner Morozov shared. “After Zhenya’s injury (received in Helsinki), upon arrival in Moscow, we did not immediately start training, we did not skate with a full set of elements in the free program, but in the free program Tokyo skated well and scored high."

The national record didn't really help.

Helping the "weaker sex" from the male singles looked ridiculous even against the background of the national record in the short by Mikhail Kolyada. Not a single Russian figure skater in history has scored 95.37 points before in the short. The Petersburger achieved such an assessment due to a cascade of quad and triple toe loops, a triple Axel and a triple Lutz in the second half of the program, already in fact yesterday. But in the company of world stars, the current champion of Russia became the fourth.

Having beaten, however, the world champion and Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu, who skated extremely dirty in the tournament debut (7th place). Even two rotations did not come out of the conceived quadruple loop... Maxim Kovtun became 11th (64.62 points, 2 points), making a "butterfly" on the quadruple axel and constipating the quadruple sheepskin coat. And the Russian team rolled back to the second team place. The Japanese Soma Uno won the short and maximum 12 points, the American Nathan Chen - the second, the Chinese Jin Boyan - the third.

The main start of the season in figure skating - the World Championship - took place in Helsinki at the end of March, but the competitive program did not exhaust itself on this. It is crowned by the World Team Championship - a fairly young species, dating back to 2009.

These competitions are held in odd years, unlike the traditional championship of the planet. The exception was 2011, when it was decided to postpone the tournament to next year due to the fact that Japan, the permanent host of the championship, was hit by a strong earthquake that caused a tsunami. The current World Cup is the fifth in history, and the Americans have the best performance, having won three gold and one silver. The Russian team can only boast of a vice-championship in 2015.

The tournament is a competition of six teams with the best rating in the system of the International Skating Union (ISU). Currently, these countries are Canada, Russia, USA, Japan, China and France. The competition program itself includes types traditional for figure skaters - short and free programs, but in women's and men's single skating, the country is represented by two athletes each, and in pairs and sports dances - by one duet. The scoring system at the World Championships is simple: in single events, the winner receives 12 points, while the last-placed skater is content with one point; in pair disciplines, the difference lies in the fact that the duet, which showed the last, sixth result, brings seven points to its team.

Who plays for the Russian team

The Russian team arrived in Tokyo almost in the optimal composition. Sports dancing is represented by the best duet in the country at the moment - Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitry Solovyov. This season at the European Championships, they became third, in the Grand Prix finals - fourth, and at the world championship - fifth. Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov are the winners of the Grand Prix final, the European Championship and the bronze medalists of the World Championship this season.

In men's single skating, the honor of Russia is defended by a non-alternative bunch - Mikhail Kolyada and Maxim Kovtun. An unpleasant episode happened to the latter before the start of the competition. The vice-champion of Europe - 2017 was late for the plane to Tokyo, which was leaving with the Russian team for the team competition. This happened due to the fact that his taxi on the way to the airport got into an accident. Kovtun had to purchase a ticket worth 50,000 rubles at his own expense.

The main hope of the Russian team is Evgenia Medvedeva. The undisputed leader of the world women's figure skating, who won all possible titles this year, arrived in the capital of Japan for another gold. Anna Pogorilaya was supposed to keep her company, but the Russian Figure Skating Federation decided to “give the athlete time and the opportunity to recover from psychological trauma (she took 13th place at the World Championships. — RT) and calmly prepare for the next season.” As a result, the choice was made in favor of Elena Radionova, who won the Universiade in Alma-Ata this season.

Dance Sport

On the first of the three days of the tournament, exceptionally short skates were planned. Opened the competitive program of the competition of sports dancers. Bobrova and Solovyov showed the third result with a total score of 68.94. In comparison with other major starts of the season, they showed the worst result: in the Grand Prix finals, the couple received 74.04 points for a short dance, 76.18 at the continental championship, and 73.54 at the World Championships.

Nevertheless, Bobrov and Solovyov put 10 points into the piggy bank of the Russian national team, and the Americans took the lead thanks to Madison Chalk and Evan Bates (79.06). In Helsinki, they also beat the Russians in the first event of the program, gaining 76.25, but after the free dance they were behind Ekaterina and Dmitry. Between the Americans and the Russians wedged Canadians Caitlin Weaver and Andrew Pozhe, whom the judges gave 76.73 points.

Bobrova and Solovyov could easily not get into the top three, but France was not represented by vice-world champions Gabriela Papadakis and Guillaume Sizeron, but by Marie-Jade Lauriot and Romain Le Gac, who in Finland did not even qualify to participate in a free dance.

Women

The crown for Russia view, of course, passed under the sign of the superiority of Evgenia Medvedeva. Her rental from the judges did not cause any complaints, and as a reward, the arbitrators were generous with high scores, which allowed the Russian woman to break her own world record in the short program, set in the Grand Prix final in Marseille (79.21). Now the new world achievement is 80.85 points.

Radionova did not let us down either, she took second place with a personal record. Elena received 72.21 points for her short program, exceeding her achievement shown at the Grand Prix stage in Moscow in November last year by 0.28 points.

The girls earned 23 points - the maximum possible set, which allowed the Russian team to take the lead. The total was 33 points, and the closest pursuers from Japan had 26.

Men

Representatives of the Land of the Rising Sun expected to make up for lost time in men's single skating, because the hosts of the tournament are the reigning champion and vice-champion of the world - Yuzuru Hanyu and Soma Uno. If the latter successfully coped with the task and brought his team 12 points, then Hanyu performed unsuccessfully, becoming only the seventh. As a result, the Japanese scored 18 points in total.

The Russians had a chance to remain leaders at the end of the first competitive day, but Maxim Kovtun let down his partners and scored a modest 64.62 points. He took the penultimate place. Apparently, the taxi incident did not go unnoticed, although Kovtun is famous for unevenly performing one of the two programs. This happened to him at the Russian Championship, but at the major international starts of the season he got ready and showed good numbers. For comparison: at the European Championships, he scored 94.53 points for the short program, and at the World Championships - 89.38.

Mikhail Kolyada did not allow his opponents to break away in the overall standings. The judges rated his rental at 95.37 points, which was not only a personal, but also a national record. The previous achievement belonged to just Kovtun - 94.53. As a result, Kolyada became the fourth, having passed not only Hanyu, but also the American Nathan Chen and the Chinese Jing Boyan. Mikhail brought Russia 9 points, and the total amount was 44, like the Japanese. The Americans are breathing in the back of the duet of leaders with 43 points.

Three events will also take place on Friday - sports couples will enter the fight, and dancers and men will present free programs. The World Championship will end on Saturday with free skates for couples and girls.

An excerpt characterizing the World Team Championship in Figure Skating 2017

“Merci,” said Pierre. The captain looked intently at Pierre, just as he looked when he learned how the shelter was called in German, and his face suddenly lit up.
- Ah! dans ce cas je bois a notre amitie! [Ah, in that case, I drink to your friendship!] – he shouted cheerfully, pouring two glasses of wine. Pierre took the poured glass and drank it. Rambal drank his, shook hands with Pierre again, and leaned his elbows on the table in a thoughtfully melancholic pose.
“Oui, mon cher ami, voila les caprices de la fortune,” he began. - Qui m "aurait dit que je serai soldat et capitaine de dragons au service de Bonaparte, comme nous l" appellions jadis. Et cependant me voila a Moscou avec lui. Il faut vous dire, mon cher, - he continued in the sad measured voice of a man who is going to tell a long story, - que notre nom est l "un des plus anciens de la France. [Yes, my friend, here is the wheel of fortune. Who said I wish I would be a soldier and captain of dragoons in the service of Bonaparte, as we used to call him. However, here I am in Moscow with him. I must tell you, my dear ... that our name is one of the most ancient in France.]
And with the easy and naive frankness of a Frenchman, the captain told Pierre the story of his ancestors, his childhood, adolescence and manhood, all his related property, family relationships. “Ma pauvre mere [“My poor mother.”] played, of course, an important role in this story.
- Mais tout ca ce n "est que la mise en scene de la vie, le fond c" est l "amour? L" amour! N "est ce pas, monsieur; Pierre?" he said, brightening up. "Encore un verre. [But all this is only an introduction to life, its essence is love. Love! Isn't that right, Monsieur Pierre? Another glass. ]
Pierre drank again and poured himself a third.
- Oh! Les femmes, les femmes! [O! women, women!] - and the captain, looking at Pierre with greasy eyes, began to talk about love and his love affairs. There were a lot of them, which was easy to believe, looking at the self-satisfied, beautiful face of the officer and at the enthusiastic animation with which he spoke about women. Despite the fact that all the love stories of Rambal had that nasty character in which the French see the exceptional charm and poetry of love, the captain told his stories with such sincere conviction that he alone experienced and knew all the charms of love, and described women so temptingly that Pierre listened with curiosity.

From April 20 to April 23, the capital of Japan will host the World Team Championship, which is held every two years (certainly in Japan) and crowns the season of figure skaters. These competitions have another name that emphasizes their commercial nature - the World Team Trophy. About the favorites of the tournament and where to watch the competition, AiF.ru told Olga Ermolina, press officer of the Russian Figure Skating Federation.

- From a purely professional point of view, is the World Team Trophy a sport or a show?

- In our world, the attitude towards this tournament is twofold. On the one hand, it is held under the auspices of the ISU (International Skating Union. - approx. AiF.ru), on the other hand, it is organized by the Japanese Figure Skating Federation under the patronage of the Asahi television company, positioning the competition as commercial.

Figure skating is, in principle, an individual sport, we have only one team tournament - the Olympics. But the regulations of the World Team Trophy do not coincide with the regulations of the Olympic Games: the Japanese, who have very well-developed single skating, but few pairs and dance duets, made it for themselves and for themselves. They found a very precise balance between sport and show. This is understandable: it is enough to visit this country at least once to understand what figure skating means for the Japanese.

- What does it mean to them?

- In a nutshell, you can’t say, but the popularity of the sport is simply incredible. Any competition that takes place in Japan is top. The halls are packed, and the public in Japan is involved, understanding and empathizing. Before the start of each performance, there is such silence that you can hear the beating of hearts. People spend the night under the doors of hotels, dreaming of at least looking at their idols up close...

- It's nice to ride in such a positive.

- Of course. Therefore, all athletes go to Japan with great pleasure - not for money, but for the atmosphere.

- Forecasts are a thankless task, but let's try anyway. Who is the favorite in 2017?

- Team competitions have one feature: the composition must be balanced, because in the end it is not the athlete who wins, but the team. It is important that no one fails. From this point of view, as far as one can judge before the start, the Canadians look very decent.

- But we have Evgeny Medvedeva.

- Zhenya is the leader of the last two seasons. She not only keeps her level, but also constantly raises it: she fights with herself - she fights and defeats herself. We all really hope that she will perform no worse than at the World Championships in Helsinki.

Why such caution in assessments?

- The end of the season. Keeping the peak of shape is a very difficult task ... In general, our squad is very interesting. If the guys show what they can and should do, if they skate at their level, we will, of course, claim good places.

- What place is considered good for the Russian team?

- In 2015, for the first time, we became the silver medalists of the World Team Championship, losing to the Americans by one point, but this is just for information. Giving forecasts and planning places is definitely not my function, I will not take such courage on myself. The difficulty is that the sport is individual, and the standings are team. Of course, everyone is set to the maximum, but, you know, talking about "winning at any cost" always creates unnecessary pressure. Therefore, you just need to roll back to your strength - and everything will be fine.

Why doesn't the World Team Trophy show Russian television?

- Again, because this is a commercial tournament. Rights cost a lot of money. But you can watch it, for example, on the ISU website. There are some restrictions on countries, but for real fans of figure skating is this really an obstacle?

According to the skater, the taxi driver is to blame for the delay, who got into an accident on the way to the airport.

However, the story ended quite happily: Kovtun bought a ticket at his own expense and soon reunited with the team.
