Sergei Kolmogorov: Efimova showed good seconds in the USA

The head coach of the Russian national swimming team Sergei Kolmogorov believes that the Olympic medalist Yulia Efimova showed good results in competitions in the United States before the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The head coach of the Russian swimming team Sergei Kolmogorov believes that the Olympic medalist Yulia Efimova showed good results in the competition in the United States before the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

“The Federation made a decision to admit Efimova to the Olympic Games during the suspension, which means we believed that the situation would be resolved safely. And FINA's decision in this regard was fully expected. Julia showed decent results in Los Angeles, which suggests that this time is enough to get in shape and compete for a medal at the Olympics. The participants of our combined relay race are especially satisfied, since the closest competitor among the participating teams in the breaststroke loses to Efimova for about 3 seconds, ”R-Sport quotes Kolmogorov as saying.

Efimova won two breaststrokes at competitions in Los Angeles after returning to the starts.

Today, April 23, in the swimming pool of the Moscow sports complex "Olympiysky" the Russian swimming championship - the only qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games - ended. The Presidium of the All-Russian Swimming Federation (VFTU) included 34 athletes to compete in Rio: 21 fulfilled all the selection criteria for personal distances, nine - relay criteria, four more were included by a special decision, as having fulfilled the standards "A" of the International Aquatics Federation (FINA). The head coach of the Russian national swimming team, Sergei Kolmogorov, clarified to Tigran Avanyan, a special correspondent of the All Sport Sports Information Agency.

“According to all criteria, 21 people were selected for the Russian Olympic swimming team to compete at the Rio Games in individual distances,” said Sergey Kolmogorov. - For the relay races, we got nine more people. In five relay races we took four people, and in the men's relay race 4x200 m - five. In total, 30 people were selected for the Olympic Games. A heated discussion took place regarding four more athletes who did not fulfill the WFTU criteria, but had the FINA “A” standard. These are young guys who must go through these Games in order to solve our main tasks at the next Olympics. So we selected 34 people to perform in Rio.”

“We still have the opportunity to join the Olympic team at the May European Championships in London (Great Britain), - continued Sergei Kolmogorov. - We decided to give such a chance only to the winners and silver medalists of the Russian Championship, who were a little lacking to fulfill the WFTU standard - at distances where there were empty places. These are Nikolay Skvortsov, Alexander Osipenko, Andrey Zhilkin and Natalya Ivaneev. Moreover, Ivaneeva will be in the team if the situation with Yulia Efimova develops unfavorably. I don't want to stay with one brassista at the Olympics. Also, Semyon Makovich will go to the European Championship - to try to fulfill the standard at a distance of 400 m complex.

“Yulia Efimova has not yet been included in the Olympic squad,” Sergei Kolmogorov specified. - If the situation is resolved positively, which we all really hope for, she will replace Ivaneeva on this list. Quantitative composition will not change. Two more athletes from the Olympic team will compete at the European Championships according to individual plans, which we agreed on back in September. This is Andrei Grechin with his coach Gennady Turetsky and Grigory Tarasevich with his coach Arkady Tarasevich. The composition of the coaches for the Olympic team has not yet been approved by the presidium.”

“I have good relations with both the Ministry of Sports and the Sports Training Center,” Sergey Kolmogorov recalled. “But I never thought that some kind of news agency would do my job professionally and highly efficiently. This is the All Sport Agency, which throughout the entire championship of Russia monitored all the standards, with all the nuances. I express my great gratitude to you - you have done the lion's share of my work.

Natalya Lovtsova commented on her performance to Tigran Avanyan, special correspondent of the All Sport Sports Information Agency.

I had slightly different intentions for this championship, but nevertheless I am very happy, - said Natalia Lovtsova. - I am very glad that I confirmed the right to go to the Olympics.

What did not work at other distances?
- I didn't have enough strength. We talked a lot with the coach, looking for a compromise. Now, after the World Cup, we know what to work on.

What are your impressions of the Russian Championship?
- The distance of 50 m crawl is a lottery (smiles). And when you win such a race, you are always happy. Today many acquaintances are rooting for me, but my main viewer today is watching swimming on TV - this is my son Styopa. He has a birthday tomorrow. My mother told me today: just try not to win a medal for your son!

Yaroslav Potapov: I was sent to swim so that I could learn to swim, but today my goal is Olympic gold

Today, April 23, the eighth day of the Russian Swimming Championship is taking place in the Moscow Olimpiysky sports complex. Yaroslav Potapov won the 1500m crawl with a Russian junior record (15.03.61), having fulfilled the WFP standard for getting into the Olympic team (15.04.22). Yaroslav Potapov commented on his performance to Tigran Avanyan, special correspondent of the All Sport Sports Information Agency.

The distance was given very hard, - said Yaroslav Potapov. - Today the championship of Russia comes to the end, and psychologically it is very difficult to prepare yourself for the last day. Everyone is already waiting for the departure home, smiling, joking. And I managed to fulfill the Olympic standard, which, I confess, I did not expect from myself. I wanted to improve my time, but I did not believe that I would "sail to Rio" (smiles).

What was the plan for this swim?
- I thought that I would stick with my friend, with my partner Ilya Druzhinin. But in the middle of the distance, he let me go forward, and I had to work alone.

At the end of the swim, you added. What made this possible?
- I heard the or tribunes, I thought that I was showing a decent time (smiles). The whole Volgograd team was rooting for me today, my coach Tatyana Vladimirovna Mankevich and my friends.

What did you think about in the last 50 meters?
- To be honest, I thought I was out of 15 minutes (laughs). But when I turned around and saw the time, I was even a little upset (smiles). But he passed the Olympic standard.

In the past, when did you first think that you could qualify for the Olympics?
- I didn’t think about it at all, it wasn’t even in my thoughts. My joy now is indescribable.

When you got into the sport, what was your goal?
- They sent me to swim - so that I could learn to swim (laughs). But then I began to succeed, the passion appeared. And today we can say that my goal is Olympic gold.

In addition to the pool, you perform in open water. Any plans for open water this season?
- Yes, according to the latest information, the European Championship was postponed to September, and I get to it. I would like to go.

What comes first for you - open water or a pool?
- I think the pool. More precisely, now - the pool (smiles).

The bronze medalist of the Rio 2016 Games and the 2017 world champion in the 200m breaststroke, 20-year-old junior sergeant of the Russian army Anton Chupkov told the press center of the “big” CSKA about the resignation of the head coach of the Russian national team Sergei Kolmogorov, and shared his plans for the future.

The All-Russian Swimming Federation on Wednesday spread information that the head coach of the Russian national team Sergei Kolmogorov left his post of his own free will. “In order to preserve the functions of managing the national team,” the WFTU presidium approved the coaching council of the national team, which included four coaches: Dmitry Lazarev, Sergey Tarasov, Sergey Chepik, Alexander Nemtyrev. The latter is the mentor of the leader of the Russian national team - CSKA athlete Anton Chupkov.

Kolmogorov rallied the Russian team

- Anton, how did you react to the resignation of the head coach of the national team Sergei Kolmogorov?
- I'm sad. Really. The team under his leadership got results, we rallied thanks to the head coach Sergei Valentinovich Kolmogorov and the captain of the Russian national team Nastya Fesikova. This year at the World Championships we won the first gold medals in 14 years. Let's see what will happen next. The main thing is that no one bothers us to train.

- Why is coach Kolmogorov good for swimmers?
- He spoke to the athletes like a human being. Always supported. Gave advice. Could jokingly pin up harmlessly. Never held empty meetings. You know, it happens that the leaders will gather the whole team and it is not clear what they are talking about for two hours. Sergei Valentinovich gathered us at the beginning of the training camp, set clear tasks, discussed organizational issues with knowledge of the matter - and that's it, we went to work.

- Did he often give you hints?
- No. Only chiseled. He knew that I had an experienced coach Alexander Sergeevich Nemtyrev.

- The media write that Kolmogorov left for health reasons ...
- I do not know. I missed the last training camp of the national team. Because the Russian team is preparing for the European Short Course Championship (Copenhagen, December 13-17), and my next start is the World Championship among military personnel. It will take place in Rio de Janeiro from 10 to 17 December in a long pool. But, no matter where I train, I sincerely wish that Sergey Valentinovich will be fine in the future. As the head coach of the Russian national team, he was wonderful.

New head coach to be appointed

- Among those who entered the governing coaching council of the Russian national team is your personal coach Alexander Nemtyrev.
- I do not consider this decision final to comment on it seriously. A head coach should be appointed, not an "acting" or "coaching board". I hope that the Ministry of Sports and our Federation will appoint a head coach.

- Are there many worthy candidates, in your opinion?
- Don't know. I should ask my coach if he wants to become the head coach of the national team? It seems to me that not at all (laughs). Once we had such a conversation with Alexander Sergeevich. He said that this is a very serious position. Firstly, he is also aged, and secondly, he trains our group, and here we will have to combine two posts. I don't think he will go for it. However, if he entered the coaching council of the national team, then he was ready for this.

I want to win two golds in Rio

- Where do you prepare for the World Championship among military personnel (SISM)?
- At the Moscow Olympic water sports center.

- Is there a difference for you whether to compete at the civil world championship or among military personnel?
- For me they are equal. At every start, I give all my best. I want to defend the honor of the country and the Russian army as often as possible.

Are you planning to break world records at the World Cup among military personnel? In what physical condition are you approaching these competitions?
- Set for a world record. Records at the World Cup among military personnel in Brazil will be considered official. But it's too early to talk about it. Let's see how things go in my preliminary swim.

- At what distances do you plan to compete in Brazil?
- 200 and 100 meters breaststroke.

- Who will be the head coach of the national team of the Russian Armed Forces in Brazil?
- Silver medalist of the 2008 European Championship, CSKA coach Lieutenant Alexander Tikhonov. We will have a large delegation at these competitions. Now a team is being formed. The goal is the same - to win as many medals as possible and win in the overall standings.

Working more than a year ago

- Have you changed the crown tactics of passing the distance of 200 m?
- It's a secret (laughs). So far I haven't changed anything. From January I will continue to work in the long pool. Maybe we will come up with something new or correct the old one.

Are you doing more training work now than you did a year ago when you were 19?
- I work more. Now I already feel myself at the same level of readiness as in the summer before the World Championships in Budapest.

- In Brazil, the competition will be held in the same pool where you won the Olympic "bronze"?
- I do not know for sure. I heard that there is nothing left of the Olympic Park in Rio. Everything went down the drain.

- But you are going to Rio with pleasant memories?
- In 2016, I did not win gold at the Rio Olympics. This means that we need to do this in 2017, but it is better to win at two distances.

- Which foreign teams are strong in military competitions.
- I know that the 2012 London Olympic champion Florent Manaud is serving in the French army. (In 2009, Floran was drafted into the ground forces, and is currently an artilleryman - approx.). The Brazilians will definitely have a serious team, like some Asian teams. Many strong European swimmers serve in the military.

- So, for you, this World Championship among military personnel is not an easy walk for medals?
- No. Any start is not a freebie for me. You always want to swim well.

I stand for the best country!

Yesterday I spoke with two-time Olympic medalist Nikita Lobintsev, who is now training in Los Angeles. He is nine years older than you. Nikita said that with age, even if you starve yourself, the swimmer becomes heavier. When Lobintsev was as old as you are now (2008), he weighed 80 kg, and now - 88. Do you feel that, as you get older, you put on weight?
- Not yet. Each person's body works and develops in its own way. My weight is 72 kg. I think to add a little bit, but so that it does not interfere with swimming 200 meters. I feel that now my body is saturated with what it needs.

- Did you get married after Rio?
- No. It's early yet.

- Housing conditions improved after the Olympics?
- No. I still don’t have my own apartment, I also live with my mother on Ryazansky Prospekt. We save money. There is only a car that was presented after the Olympics. All.

- Would you like to live in Los Angeles, train with Vladimir Morozov and Nikita Lobintsev?
- Who said that it's cooler there? I live in the capital of Russia - in the best city in the world. I have the best coach, I play for the best country.

Photos provided by the CSKA press center

The head coach of the Russian national swimming team Sergey Kolmogorov, especially for the CSKA press center, summed up the results of the season's performances of the leaders of the national team - the army team Anton Chupkov and Vladimir Morozov.

At the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest (July 14-30), Chupkov became the winner in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:06.96), and Morozov could not even reach the semi-finals in the signature 100-meter freestyle.

- Sergey Valentinovich, evaluate the performance of Chupkov and Morozov in the season...
- Chupkov performed superbly. The coaches did everything right with him. At the same time, Chupkov has undeniable potential for further growth. He and the coaches still have work to do that could move his result by a second. They haven't done it yet because it's early. Before such work, you need to mature, grow up.

What amazes me is that Chupkov is a very intelligent person. It is a pleasure for me to communicate with him. At the Mare Nostrum competitions, he swam strongly (twice updated the Russian record). After the competition, Anton came up to me and said: “Sergey Valentinovich, now I have completed the work that brought me true satisfaction.”

As for Morozov, we started a discussion with him through the press about his victory in the overall standings of the World Cup last season. Volodya is an athlete, but he does not understand what the cumulative training effect is. Such intense competitions, consisting of nine stages of the World Cup, never pass without a trace. So I was waiting for what he showed at the World Championships. It seems to me that Volodya has already begun to think. If he does not go to the third cluster of the World Cup, performs at the European Short Course Championships (December 13-17, Copenhagen, Denmark) and then leaves to prepare for America, then we can expect a fantastic result from him at the 2018 European Championships in England. And if he again swims through all nine stages of the World Cup, then we will again get what we got in Budapest. There are simply general biological patterns. Why don't world swimming leaders participate in the World Cup? They're just smarter. Here is your answer.

-In pursuit of a long ruble in short water?
- In the Olympic year, using the authority of the head coach of the national team, I will prohibit such experiments. It's all the preparation for the main starts knocks down. We have a good relationship with Volodya. I like him for his intellect. Yes, he is a really talented athlete, but, from my point of view, he has not yet fully realized his talents. He may well show a result close to the world record at the fifty dollars, but for this it is necessary to radically change the annual training cycle. Don't start it with a "kill" at nine World Cups. Vladimir disagrees with me. But we don't fight about it. He even joked: “Sergei Valentinovich, do you want me to share the money for the World Cup stages?” (laughs).

-Morozov can really update the world record on the "fifty kopecks" crawl?
- Undoubtedly. Here, on the "Round Lake", three days before our departure to Budapest for the 2017 World Cup, he easily, naturally swam the "fifty dollars" in 21.72 seconds. I have never seen such a thing. We both came to the conclusion: if he can swim like that all three times at the World Championships, it will be fantastic. Does he have a chance to become a world record holder? What about writing it off? He is an absolutely adequate athlete, without bad habits, without violations of the regime. He is communicative and a pleasure to work with. This generation of athletes is completely different. They are not rude. Chupkov, Morozov, Rylov are very intelligent guys. Therefore, the atmosphere in the national team is wonderful.
