European Boxing Championship. They lost the championship: the Russian boxing team took second place at the European Championship. border incident

MOSCOW, 24 June. /TASS/. The Russian boxing team won five medals (two gold, two silver and one bronze) at the European Championship that ended in Kharkov and took second place in the unofficial team event, losing to the Ukrainian team, which has three golds, one silver and two bronzes.

The last time the Russian team failed to become the best at the European Championship in 2008. Umar Kremlev, Secretary General of the Russian Boxing Federation, told TASS that the team's performance was unsatisfactory, as it was tasked with winning the team event.

“An unsatisfactory result, we should not show such results,” said Kremlev. “On June 30, we will have a coaching council, where we will sort out each weight. Changes are needed, perhaps in preparation for tournaments.”

border incident

The European Championship began with a scandal. The Ukrainian border service did not let boxer Georgiy Kushitashvili (under 81 kg category), who competed at a tournament in Crimea two years ago, into the country, he was replaced by teammate Muslim Gadzhimagomedov. In addition, four coaches of the Russian national team were denied entry to Ukraine. Earlier, the Russian delegation was given appropriate guarantees by International Association Boxing (AIBA) and the European Boxing Confederation.

The Russian Boxing Federation did not file a complaint because of the incident. Kremlev explained to TASS that the priority for the team is preparation for the World Cup, not the courts. In his opinion, in this situation, the Organizing Committee of the European Championship and the Ukrainian Boxing Federation are not to blame, and the responsibility lies with the Ukrainian authorities.

"The Russian team could have three gold"

Four Russian boxers reached the finals of the championship - Vasily Egorov (weight category up to 49 kg), Gabil Mamedov (up to 60 kg), Gadzhimagomedov (up to 81 kg) and Evgeny Tishchenko (up to 91 kg). First gold in the piggy bank Russian team brought Egorov, who in the final was stronger than the Englishman Galal Yafai. Following him, Mamedov could have won the first place, but lost by a separate decision of the judges to the Ukrainian Yuriy Shestak. Gadzhimagomedov also failed to win gold, having failed to cope with the Irishman Joseph Ward.

Olympic champion Rio 2016 Tishchenko confirmed his status as a favorite, in the final duel being stronger than the representative of England Shivan Clark. Bronze medal at the European Championship weight class over 91 kg was won by Maxim Babanin.

Kremlev, summing up the results of the completed championship for TASS, noted low level refereeing in the duel between Mammadov and Shestak. "We could have had three gold medals, but in the final of the weight category up to 60 kg we were sued. We will deal with refereeing, I will raise this issue at the AIBA Executive Committee. We need to express our position at the international level," said the Secretary General of the Russian Boxing Federation.

Main coach national team Oleg Menshikov noted that Russian athletes showed a decent level of boxing. "The guys showed good boxing at the European Championship. Of course, I would like refereeing to be always better," Menshikov said.

From August 25 to September 3 in Hamburg, Germany the championship will take place peace. According to the head coach of the national team, the squad for world championship practically formed, noting that it will include Tishchenko and Yegorov.

Kharkiv is not Liverpool for you

Kharkiv adequately coped with the responsible mission of holding the European Boxing Championship. The winners have been named. The organization is confidently normal. Yes, and the Lokomotiv Sports Palace once again confirmed its high status of the “arena of champions”.

But no such forum is complete without scandals, curiosities, summing up and comparative statistics - they say, we are better than we used to be. As for the statistics, the current performance of our team is really one of the best. This happened only in 2008 in Liverpool, where our boxers got four gold medals. But Kharkiv is not Liverpool for you. More medals have been won on home soil. However, let’s take a look at all of the above points one by one.

Scandal

The scandal erupted on the eve of the start and, in principle, was expected somewhere. So, on the border of our state with the northern neighbor, representatives of the Russian team were “wrapped up”. In particular, Georgy Kushitashvili (because of his participation in the tournament in the Crimea), the FBI press attache (such an abbreviation for the Russian Boxing Federation) Vlad Romanov, several fans who traveled as part of the delegation, and two journalists. In principle, this news was sucked up for several days, but then the championship began, and the scandal subsided by itself. It should be noted that, in principle, Kushitashvili could have entered the fight for medals in the 81 kg weight category. But subjunctive moods are not popular in sports.

curiosity

Boxers from Scotland and Spain in the weight category up to 81 kilograms "amuseed" the spectators. They managed to knock each other down at the same time. Scot Sean Lazzerini and Spaniard Alejandro Camacho Fernandez in one of the episodes carried out their attacks successfully and together they could not stay on their feet. But they were able to get up and continue the fight, and the Scot won the victory on points and a license for the World Championship.

Summarizing

Here, of course, we are talking about our Ukrainian team, which won three gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals of the European Championship.

Ten representatives of Ukraine started the campaign for medals. Nine of them became champions of Ukraine, which took place in November 2016 in Kharkiv. The only boxer who took second place was the experienced heavyweight Viktor Vykhryst, who lost in the final to Igor Shevadzutsky. But such a decision of the coaches of our team later more than justified itself. We also note that only Nikolai Butsenko played in the team Olympic Games in Rio.

But not all of our countrymen reached the first step of the podium. First, let's remember the fiasco in the opening round of the representative of the category up to 64 kg Mher Hovhannisyan, who lost to the Englishman Luke McCormack with a score of 2-3. In weight up to 49 kg three-time champion of Ukraine Nazar Kurotchin in? the final could not defeat the Russian Vasily Egorov, who later became the champion of Europe. But Nazar has a license for the World Cup.

In the category up to 52 kg, Ukraine was represented by the youngest collection Dmytro Zamotaev from Zaporozhye. He managed to successfully overcome stages 1/8 and? final, went to the semi-finals, where he lost to the Bulgarian Daniel Asenov, who then also became the European champion. Zamtoaev has a bronze medal at the European Championship and a ticket to the World Championship.

In the weight category up to 56 kg, 25-year-old Nikolai Butsenko from Odessa competed, who, we recall, was part of our Olympic team in Rio. Nikolai successfully managed to reach the final, but in the decisive battle for gold medal lost to Englishman Peter McGrail.

In the weight category up to 60 kg, Yuriy Shestak, a representative of the Kharkiv boxing school, demonstrated the gold medal way. In the final, Yuri confidently dealt with the Russian Gabil Mamedov and became the European champion.

In welterweight (up to 69 kg) Evgeny Barabanov from Kiev performed at the home forum. He, like Zamotaev, reached the semi-finals and became the owner of a license for the World Championship and a bronze medal.

In the middle weight (up to 75 kg), the representative of the Ukrainian national boxing team at the European Championship 2017 was a young resident of Poltava Oleksandr Khizhnyak. It is worth talking about it separately. The Ukrainian became a unique fighter among the Europeans. He is the only boxer on the continent who won two "gold" of the continental championship this year. In March, Alexander took the gold medal of the European Championship among boxers under 22, and now he has the gold medal of the adult championship. Experts predict a stellar career for this boxer.

For light heavyweight (up to 81 kg) Vladimir Skripka, the tournament ended at the 1/8 final stage, but heavyweight boxer (up to 91 kg) Ramazan Muslimov managed to reach the quarterfinals and secured participation in the World Championship.

In heavyweight (over 91 kg) let's note the success of the Ukrainians, which became a cool final chord of the European Championship. Victor Vykhrist knew no obstacles on the way to the championship in his weight category. In the final, he met with the uncompromising Englishman Fraser Clark. This fight had another hidden connotation: Viktor was the sparring partner of Wladimir Klitschko, but Arthur was the sparring partner of Anthony Joshua. This added intrigue to the fight in the eyes of the fans. In fact, by unanimous decision of the judges, sparring partner Klitschko turned out to be stronger than his colleague from the Joshua camp.

In the medal standings of the European Championship, the Ukrainian team took first place. By simple mathematical calculations, we have 6 medals - three "golds": Yuri Shestak (up to 60 kg), Alexander Khizhnyak (up to 75 kg), Viktor Vykhrist (over 91 kg), Nikolay Butsenko's silver (up to 56 kg) and two bronze medals: Dmitry Zamotaeva (up to 52 kg) and Evgeny Barabanova (up to 69 kg).

In second place in the medal standings are the Russians with five medals (2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze), and the third is the British with 8 medals (1 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze).

Statistics

234 boxers from 39 countries took part in the 2017 Old World Championship. The current European Championship had two missions at once - to determine the strongest on the continent and to “paint” passes for the World Championship in Hamburg. Qualified for the world boxing forum, which will be held in August, the best 8 boxers in each weight category.

And, of course, Ukrainian fans cannot avoid comparative statistics with the most successful performance of our boxers so far at the European Championship in Liverpool, England. Then the Ukrainian team made a splash. The Ukrainians had four gold medals, won by Georgy Chigaev (up to 51 kg), Vasily Lomachenko (up to 57 kg), Ivan Senai (up to 75 kg) and Oleksandr Usyk (up to 81 kg), Roman Kapitonenko bronze (over 91 kg) and first team place in the medal standings. Today, there are more medals at the home championship, but less gold. But, nevertheless, for our team, whose average age is 22 years, this is an undoubted success. With what and congratulations!
