Studded winter running shoes. How to dress warmly and choose running shoes for winter. With non-slip sole

adidas running laboratory expert, co-founder of the Marathon Apartment project

Running shoes in winter must meet several requirements. First, the sole should have an aggressive, toothy tread. If you run more often on uncleaned paths, the main task is to have good grip on the surface. Agree, it's nice to feel confident on any slippery track! The advanced technology that provides the best grip is the Continental rubber outsole. Yes, yes, this is a brand of well-known car tires. In sneakers with such a sole, you will easily overcome your winter running kilometers.

Secondly, shoes, which are protected by a membrane fabric on the outside, will allow you to run in any slush from December to March. Why membranous tissue? Because due to the peculiarities of its structure, it does not allow moisture to pass through, does not absorb it, while allowing the foot to “breathe”. The most dense membrane in the running industry is GORE-TEX. Shoes with such a membrane give the greatest chance of running home with dry feet.

Should running shoes be warm? This is very individual, it is worth proceeding from personal goals and feelings. Although if you pick up shoes for everyday quiet runs, then the presence of a heater inside will be very appropriate.

The cold season and ice is not a reason to give up an active lifestyle, especially after a long break it is quite difficult to restore activities, for example, running. In order for running training not only to bring benefits and joy, but also not to harm the health of the runner, it is very important to choose the right equipment. For the cold season, this is especially important, because, in addition to the usual risks of injury, new ones are added that are characteristic of the cold months (the likelihood of falling by slipping).

Why you need running shoes for winter

Choosing the right running shoes for winter running can sometimes be tricky. This is because when buying such shoes, it is necessary to take into account several important parameters at once. And improperly selected shoes threaten with colds, excessive fatigue, all kinds of injuries. Inadequate training on the list seems to be the most innocuous consequence.

Do you really need special winter shoes? Maybe it's better not to splurge on an extra pair of shoes, but spend the money on something else? The answer to this question is simple: we do not walk in sandals or shoes in the snow in winter, because it is inconvenient, dangerous and stupid.

Summer sports shoes are not intended for classes in the cold season (unless, of course, these classes are held in the gym on a treadmill). Shoes are sensitive to cold and will wear out quickly after a few wears. This is at least. In summer "crosses" it is impossible to stand on slippery, uneven paths, which will inevitably lead to falls and, possibly, serious injuries. Such shoes pass moisture well, and in the cold, the wet feet of an athlete heated up by running will leave almost no chance of avoiding a cold and related problems. Summer studded shoes are also not suitable for jogging on slippery winter tracks.

Features of winter running shoes

You should not try to save money on winter running shoes by looking for cheap alternatives. This is the part of the equipment that cannot be skimped on. High-quality sneakers for winter and autumn should be protected from moisture, have good breathability, be waterproof, anti-slip, have insulation and a well-flexible sole. In some cases, it is desirable that women's and men's winter running shoes have rubber or removable studs. Sneakers for winter should fit well on the leg, without restricting the movement of the foot. The heel and toe should feel free to move confidently. If the model is chosen incorrectly, and the foot in the shoes is too tight, you can not only ruin the whole workout, but also get frostbite.

Choosing shoes for winter running

Not only the world's leading brands offer special shoes for sports activities in the cold. Analogues are also found in little-known firms. When buying winter running shoes, the brand is almost the last thing to focus on. Of course, it is better to refrain from buying suspiciously cheap winter running shoes in the markets. But the Adidas brand badge will not warm your feet and protect your joints if this label flaunts on shoes that do not suit you.

When choosing running shoes for winter running, it is important to consider the region where you live. The water-repellent membrane of the sneakers will be useful for those who live in regions with relatively warm winters, i.e. where the snow is mostly slush. For regions with severe snowy winters and extreme cold, absolutely waterproof sneakers should be selected.

When buying winter running shoes, you should also consider the gender of the athlete. Women's winter running shoes are different from those for men. Winter running shoes for men have a wide block. The cushioning of such shoes is stiffer than the cushioning of women's models. The heel of women's sneakers is slightly raised and looks like a platform.

The presence of reflective shoes on the shoes will help you out a lot if you have to run in the dark. And in our latitudes, the light hours of a winter day can be counted on the fingers. Safety is above all. And according to the law, people who go out into the street at night must have reflectors on their clothes.

Choose sneakers with spikes or without?

Running shoes for winter can have different types of soles. It can be a regular flexible (but dense) sole, or a studded one. Crosses with a flat sole are suitable for running on asphalt, and studded winter running shoes are better to buy if you plan to run on snow and ice. Spikes, by the way, can be integral with the sole of the shoe, and can be removable. Studded winter shoes improve traction on uncomfortable frozen ground, but they are strongly discouraged when running on asphalt. On sale there are also special overlays for sneakers for winter. They are a special design with spikes, which is worn on ordinary winter sneakers. This is a good solution for those who have not yet decided what terrain they will run on. When buying overlays, take with you the shoes you plan to wear them on, it is quite difficult to find overlays of the right size.

Browse by brand

Many brands of sports equipment offer their models of sneakers for running on snow and ice. Brands have their own distinctive features that will turn running on snowy terrain into an exciting journey.

For example, the Inov 8 Oroc 280 studded sneakers are fairly light at around 300 grams. Certain Nike models have reflective and increased water resistance. The Asics Gel-Arctic 4 has retractable studs and is perfect for running in extreme cold. And the New Balance 110 Boot has a high sock that protects the ankle.

Whatever shoe brand you choose: Adidas, Puma, Nike, etc., the main thing is to choose a comfortable model that meets your anatomical features. Winter running shoes should be slightly oversized. And don't forget the special winter sports socks!

In central Russia, the first snow fell, in the Urals and Siberia, bears hibernated in dens, which means it's time for trail runners to put on their shoes and dress for the weather to start the winter preparation period. A lot of new trail running shoes have arrived at the Sport Marathon, some of which are great for winter. Of course, how many people, so many requirements for winter running shoes, but here are the models that, in our opinion, are best suited for winter trail running.

Mizuno Wave Mujin 3 GTX

Running shoes from the legendary Japanese company for people who need extra support and stability while running.

Key features of the model:

The presence of the Gore-Tex membrane makes them more adaptable to cold temperatures and snow or slush on the shoes. In combination with snow and mud protection leggings, they will become invulnerable to moisture ingress. The thick sole is resistant to freezing. The foot in these sneakers has more distance from the cold surface than in more minimalist models. The structure and width of the sole gives more stability and stability, which is especially important on winter surfaces. Michelin tires are not just a marketing ploy (although, of course, they are too). The tread is derived from mountain bike tires for better grip on trail surfaces. Carbon rubber rubber has high durability characteristics. Excellent foot fixation due to the many sewn-in structures, a thick heel counter with an integrated plastic cup, and soft lacing. The Wave midsole in the outsole provides excellent cushioning on hard surfaces, distributing the load evenly across the foot. The main technology in Mizuno's off-road running shoes is XtaRide. Due to the well-thought-out arrangement of flex grooves in the midsole, as well as rubber lugs, the sneaker bends around bumps on the way and at the same time clings to the surface. The shoe is best suited for overpronation and overweight runners who need arch support.

Asics GEL-FujiSetsu 2 GTX

15 metal spikes on the sole of the runner, yo-ho-ho and a membrane on top! Now, this is the only Asics model in Russia suitable for running on snow, firn and ice, i.е. for our winter. These SUVs are for owners of neutral and hypopronation feet. For those who overpronate, there is the option of wearing custom insoles, so don't be discouraged.

Key features of the model:

The presence of 15 spikes on each shoe, located on the already high tread, providing excellent grip on snow of any consistency, firn, ice. The presence of the Gore-Tex membrane makes the sneakers more adaptable to low winter temperatures and protects against moisture penetration through the last. We also recommend using it with a snow gaiter if you are running in deep snow. Gel Cushioning cushioning system - a special type of silicone located in the toe and heel of the shoe, reduces the load on the athlete's knees and spine. Wear-resistant rubber and sole material SoLyte does not change its density at low temperatures. Cushioning and grip remain the same. Soft, classic lacing and a knot pocket at the tongue. Sneakers fix the foot well, while they have a fairly free toe. The sides of the bow have pads to protect against mesh breakage. The shoe is suitable for runners who value lightness, speed and dynamism even on winter surfaces.

Salomon Speedcross 4

Many fans of the legendary model of trail running shoes from the French brand Salomon were waiting for the release of the new, already fourth Speedcross. The main change affected the tread of the sole of the sneaker, but the main qualities of the last were preserved. Speedcross is still suitable for neutral runners, and for the rest in combination with custom insoles.

The main features of the model:

The legendary aggressive protector has been improved and strengthened. Now each swept tread stud has a full pattern, both in the center and on the sides for better traction and durability. The tread height in different areas of the boot is different, the thickness of the spikes makes them more resistant to ground resistance. When running on snow, these studs will last a very long time and provide a high level of grip. The Gore-Tex membrane keeps the shoe warm and keeps moisture out. Paired with the Salomon Trail Gaiters, the shoe will provide maximum moisture protection. The shoe still has good dynamics due to the average lateral stiffness and torsional stiffness. In them, the leg is protected from sprains of the ligaments of the foot when slipping. Sneakers have good cushioning in the heel, part of the cushioning is taken over by the tread spikes. Stiff heel counter, SensiFit system and Kevlar quick lacing provide a secure fit. The lacing stows away in a pocket on the tongue. Incredibly strong toe guards against sticking into hard obstacles. The tongue is equipped with a membrane that prevents debris from entering the sneakers.

Salomon SnowCross CS

The most highly specialized model in the Salomon running shoe collection is the Salomon SnowCross CS winter running shoe. The model retains its basic characteristics from year to year, being the main winter training tool for many trail runners. Built on a Speedcross last, these shoes are capable of providing reliable protection in the most extreme conditions. For high-speed races on Elbrus, this model is chosen by such famous high-altitude skyrunners as Vitaly Shkel and Karl Egloff.

Salomon SnowCross CS key features:

The presence of 9 “win” alloy spikes on each shoe allows you to maintain grip on firn, snow of any consistency, ice. For walking on mountain bottle ice, crampons can be worn on sneakers. Snow gaiters sewn into the Speedcross last allow you to use the shoe in fairly deep snow without the risk of snow and moisture getting inside. Leggings are fastened over the inner sneaker with a zipper, protected from moisture. If you don't need a snow gaiter but like the performance of this model, the Salomon SpikeCross 3 CS winter running shoe is an alternative. Everything is the same - only without leggings, which provides him with less weight - 325 grams. The ClimaShield membrane - a lining with increased breathability allows you to remove excess heat during high-intensity exercise, and also contributes to a better microclimate inside the shoe. Membrane, sockliner and studs combine to make the shoe ideal for mountain climbing on snow during the spring/summer season and trail training during the winter. Aggressive tread from Speedcross 3 holds traction well in snow and soft ground. Tires - Mud&Snow Contagrip The characteristics of the sole and cushioning completely repeat the Speedcross 3 - medium torsional and lateral stiffness, high cushioning. The fixation of the foot is provided by a rigid back of the heel, quick lacing of the inner sneaker, SensiFit fixation system.

Mizuno Wave Kien 3 GTX

The Mizuno Wave Kien 3 GTX trail running shoe is a great multi-surface option for those who need to run a few miles on pavement or dirt before hitting the real trail or snow. A true all-rounder at a low price will meet the needs of most urban trail runners. Model for people with neutral pronation, medium and wide feet.

Key features of the model:

Versatile outsole tread made of heavy-duty composite X10 abrasion rubber in the heel for use on any surface, especially city trails. Low torsional and lateral stiffness with a high sole thickness. The shoes bend and twist easily. High level of frost protection and at the same time high responsiveness on bumps. The wide, thick outsole, along with the Wave midsole, provides superior cushioning, stability, and heel push. Sneakers are designed for runners weighing up to 90 kg, although in practice, perhaps more. The Gore-Tex membrane keeps moisture out through the shoe's last and also insulates it, working in conjunction with a triple mesh with increased ventilation and vapor permeability. A stiff heel counter, sewn-in bands, a thick tongue and classic soft lacing provide a snug fit and lockdown. The toe of the sneaker is free, designed for medium and wide feet, which allows you to use an insulated sock if desired, or leaves additional air to keep you warm. The toe is reinforced for impact protection.

Asics GEL-FujiAttack 5 GTX

Another “wagon” that can run from asphalt to trail without loss and work out a long winter run is the Asics Gel-FujiAttack 5 GTX. A shoe for people with normal pronation, designed for an average weight runner and tailored for high-intensity training and high speed, as well as trail competition. Classic trail Asics without unnecessary bells and whistles and cheaper than many competitors.

The main features of the model:

A versatile tread with a wide pattern of wear-resistant AHAR + rubber makes it possible to run not only on snow and mud in the suburbs, but also on urban hard surfaces or dirt roads. The Gore-Tex membrane significantly insulates the sneaker and does not allow moisture to pass through from the outside, and also removes excess heat and steam to the outside. The structure of the sole and last is designed for intensive running and competition. Sneakers with low torsional and lateral stiffness, easy to bend and twist. The California shoe is soft and comfortable. The Asics Gel cushioning works great on firm ground, packed snow and tarmac, improving heel push. Soft classic lacing tightly fixes the foot and stows away in a separate pocket. Criss-cross lacing is protected by an external tape from snags. The nose is reinforced and protects the fingers when hitting hard obstacles.

Asics GEL-FujiTrabuco 5 GTX

The famous "Trabuco" from Asics in the new version have become more adaptable to harsh trails, including winter ones. If the FujiAttack can be classified as a middleweight shoe, the FujiTrabuco is clearly suitable for heavier runners as well. Stability and reliability are synonymous with this shoe, complete with gore-tex and a thick, wide, wear-resistant outsole that allows them to be used on hard ground on the way to the snowy trail. Suitable for neutral pronation and in combination with custom insoles for hyper-, hypo-pronation.

Key features of the model:

Wide outsole in Full Contact style for full ground contact for improved stability and traction. The outsole is made of durable AHAR+ rubber. Inside the sole there is a Rock Protection Plate protection system against sharp stones. Wide soft last for large feet and use with a padded toe. Gore-Tex membrane for insulation and moisture removal from the outside, also passes excess heat from the inside to the outside. The medium-height tread with a large pattern area allows the use of sneakers on both hard and snowy grounds. High levels of cushioning from the Asics Gel system enhances heel strike, while the I.G.S. reduces the risk of injury to the musculoskeletal system. Tight fixation of the foot is ensured by a firm heel, classic soft lacing that stows in a separate pocket on the tongue, and built-in fixation tapes. The toe is reinforced with a faux leather overlay and a durable rubber outsole that extends to the toe.

Salomon S-Lab Wings 8 SG

And now the hour has come for those who did not give up the membrane in running shoes even in winter. And this is quite reasonable. For those looking for a fresher look, Salomon S-lab Wings Soft Ground trail running shoes. The model itself is definitely demi-season and is declared as a competitive shoe for muddy tracks. However, its tenacious tread will work great on snow, including mixed with mud and sand, which is in abundance in our winter, especially in urban parks and forest areas. When used only on snow, the sneakers will have a fresh look for a very long time - both the upper and the sole. Neutral running shoes with the ability to insert your own insoles to support your feet.

Key features of the model:

The Salomon competition model for the longest distances, using materials with an eye to the lowest possible weight reduction while maintaining a balance of reliability. Aggressive multi-directional tread with increased stud area for muddy, loose surfaces and snow. The shoes are able to handle some amount of pavement running without damaging the rubber, but remember that they are still for trail and competition. In the eighth version, the manufacturers tried to strengthen the anatomical fold line - a weak point of many trail shoes. The thin mesh is reinforced with an additional layer. There is no membrane in the sneakers, which gives excellent ventilation, so in winter it is recommended to wear sneakers with high-quality insulated running socks. At the same time, sneakers dry much faster when wet, the textile itself also has water-repellent properties. A soft, wide last for medium to wide feet is best suited. A medium heel counter, quick lacing with a pocket, and EndoFit + SensiFit systems fix the foot very tightly. Reinforced rubberized nose absorbs shock. A high level of cushioning in the heel and also a Profeel Film carbon plate protect the foot from impact load and stepping on sharp hard stones. The sneakers have low torsional and lateral stiffness, they bend easily.

A clear competitor to Salomon Snowspike, only in La Sportiva, judging by the description on the link, you can screw in spikes, they are not built in initially. And the whole line is a clear challenge to Speedcross/Snowcross. Obviously - this model is for the most tin, for races, training in deep snow and climbing Elbrus for speed and other peaks. Fast lacing, plus gaiter with zipper. Aggressive tread that can be screwed into studs, which again are not included. Gore-Tex waterproof membrane. Real reviews are very interesting. The product has been on the market for the fourth winter.

Inferior to the Snowspike model in terms of price and lack of spikes.

The Sock-Shield Gaiter technology on the upper creates a moisture-wicking sheath that locks in comfortably yet securely.
The built-in gaiter prevents snow, dirt and debris from getting inside the sneaker.
The quick lacing system integrated into the upper design allows you to adjust the volume as much as possible, taking into account the anatomical features of your foot.
Gore® Flex Construction technology makes this shoe one of the most flexible on the market.

Hoka decided to put her 5 kopecks into this sector, realizing that the loyal audience to their brand has grown very large over the past few years. Great for running in the cold season. The construction of the SKYSHELL™ waterproof upper and mid-height cuff provide protection from snow and moisture, but it is worth noting that its height and construction is clearly different from the competition from the list above.

Impact-absorbing CMEVA foam is built into the wide Vibram® Megagrip outsole with 5mm deep lugs.

Nike's winter running shoes are an attempt to meet the demands of runners who want more weather protection that trail shoes can offer, but are still ground to the pavement. The diagonal zipper does not pinch the instep, the integrated gaiter is fixed with a comfortable wide Velcro.
Under the upper protective layer, there is an “inner boot” designed according to the “fit-toe” principle, which comfortably and securely fixes the foot without the help of laces.
The large outer loop makes it easy to put on.
ZoomX foam effectively absorbs impact energy and actively releases it at the beginning of each next step.
Outsole with low-profile tread and water-repellent grooves provides good traction.

No membrane, but the upper is claimed to be water-repellent

The next development of the Fujitrabuco series has quite dramatic visual differences from its predecessors. The low profile of the sole, the quick lacing system and the gaiter integrated into the architecture of the upper are what immediately catches the eye.
A nice bonus is that the shoe is light enough to be used at fast competitive speeds.
Breathable yet tight and secure upper. The Flytefoam™ Lyte midsole delivers durable cushioning, while an anti-rock plate ensures you don't have to worry about breaking through tough terrain.
The entire structure rests on the grippy ASICS Grip outsole, capable of providing reliable movement on various surfaces.

The absence of a membrane for many runners in winter with water obstacles will seem like a big plus.

WINTER SHOES WITH SPIKES

Of course, this block should also be opened with new Snowspike CSWP, but we already wrote about them above.

The release of the fifth Spikecross is not without mysticism, because “were there fourths?” Indeed, the fifth version came out quite a few years after the appearance of the third and also received a large technological upgrade. In fact, Spikecross 5 GTX is Snowspike, only without snow gaiters and with a different membrane - Gore-Tex. This model was built on the basis of the Speedcross 5 GTX, so it has all its features and properties, but with the addition of a studded sole. For what? For running in winter on icy surfaces, snow. The model allows you to train and go to the starts of such ultimate races as Baikal Marathon, Ice Valdaice, Ice Onego, and other ice races.

In addition to the unique traction properties of these sneakers on slippery surfaces, I was very pleased with the good flexibility of the midsole, which is rare in winter models. Running on ice and snow is not much different in sensations from running in ordinary sneakers on familiar surfaces (ground, asphalt). Relatively light weight makes it suitable for the most ambitious outdoor work. A moderately insulated upper combined with a breathable Gore-Tex membrane allows you to maintain a stable and comfortable microclimate inside the sneaker, leaving your feet warm and dry.

Lightweight racing shoe for snow and ice. 14 ARCTICTALON 275 studs adapt to your movement during high-speed runs, while the PROTEC shank provides protection for your feet. Classic lacing, flexible sole. A direct competitor for Salomon Speedspike in terms of meaning and features. Hooks built into the upper architecture can be used to attach Race Ultra Gaiters for added protection.

This model is ready to demonstrate its fast running qualities on wet surfaces, in mud, snow and frozen roads. Sneakers are great for running in the woods, because their original purpose is orienteering competitions. Innovative outsole technology combines Dual-C and Ice-Tec rubber for superior performance in low temperatures and other challenging conditions. 9 tungsten carbide studs integrated into self-cleaning tread studs provide maximum traction. The upper is made of durable water-repellent fabric with overlays around the perimeter that reinforce the structure. The architecture of the model uses a powerful Protec-Shank arch support, which completely fixes the middle part of the sole of the instep area and extends into the forefoot with four wide plates of different sizes.

WINTER RUNNING SHOES WITH WATERPROOF MEMBRANE

The successor to the acclaimed trail shoe series, the Speedcross 5 Gtx has received a number of design updates. First up is the Sensifit upper, which replaces Ripstop with a lighter, more stretchy material. From the outside, it is strengthened by a flexible polyurethane lamination that performs the functions of support and protection. Moisture-resistant, vapor-permeable Gore-Tex membrane acts as a reliable protection against weather vagaries. The architecture of the upper is more spacious than previous models - the fit has become more comfortable, but without losing the stability of the fixation of the foot. Contagrip outsole with a more aggressive tread pattern featuring 6mm multi-directional studs. The new design allows you to feel confident both on a dirty surface and in the snow - the spikes cling well and are just as actively self-cleaning. It is worth noting the rather high landing of the Speedcross 5 and the powerful, set back heel with a thickness of 31 mm.

Such a shocking name can very easily predict their essence - Salomon Supercross are created for the WOW-effect of the public starting to run. The first thing that catches your eye is, of course, a cool, stylish-fashionable-youthful design, far from the usual trail runners. The idea is based, of course, on Speedcross, whose aggressive features are guessed in a more urban casual style. Supercross is a universal combination, one sneaker for all occasions of the difficult life of a Russian runner, who must be both fashionable and not fall into the mud, in the literal sense. And perhaps this is Salomon's attempt to wean you from wearing Speedcross anywhere! Moisture-resistant vapor-permeable Gore-Tex membrane acts as a reliable protection against weather whims, at the same time effectively removes internal evaporation. Good Cushioning - Eva foam midsole effectively absorbs impacts on the ground, reducing the load on the musculoskeletal system.

For what? For running in the conditions of "city-park-forest-mountain". Good on snow, mud, loose soil, hard surfaces. Good for everyday wear.

Important! Not suitable for running on ice.

Another upgrade of the second most popular model after the "speedcross". Sense Ride 2 GTX is designed for training and running in the cold season. The integration of the unusual Gore-Tex Invisible Fit membrane makes the shoe resistant to dry snow and light rain. At the same time, the membrane breathes well and even removes moisture, although it is slower than the summer model. Sense Ride fell in love with the majority for the combination of many qualities in one model and relative versatility. Good cushioning thanks to the Vibe system: two-density EVA in the midsole is combined with Opal cushioning in the heel and forefoot. The high lateral flexibility of the shoe makes the shoe dynamic, while the medium torsional stiffness, together with the protective film Profeel, gives confidence and protection on the terrain. A versatile Contagrip tread that holds traction well on packed snow, dirt and even asphalt. Comfortable soft last with good fixation of the foot due to the Sensifit system, quick lacing QuickLace and a cup in the heel of medium hardness. Reflective elements for visibility at night when exposed to light.

For what? For running on hard surfaces, classic non-technical trails, park paths, asphalt patches, packed snow, forest trails, light dirt.

Properly selected seasonal running equipment is one of the most important and key factors that ensure a comfortable and productive exercise. Many beginners who have just started running face a problem when the summer-fall season comes to an end and winter comes.

Snow, low temperatures and ice are just a few of the problems that a runner faces when he decides not to give up his activities in the winter. Now he faces a special challenge, which is to find the right and at the same time comfortable winter sneakers.

What you need to know about running in winter

Running in winter has special charms that are not characteristic of any other season. At this time, the athlete meets with additional difficulties and obstacles, occurring in the form of a slippery surface, alternating with snow, asphalt and irregularities with blocks of ice. High humidity creates no less difficulties, which instantly affects the state of the body, the well-being of the runner.

Definitely, summer shoes are absolutely not suitable for jogging in winter, as they are not only sensitive to cold, but also unable to stand on slippery and uneven surfaces. Lightweight sneakers instantly let in moisture, which exposes the athlete to a huge risk of getting sick.

In addition, improperly selected winter sneakers with spikes for active running in the snow significantly increase the load on the legs. The runner not only does not get a full workout, but also dooms himself to torment in the form of pain in the joints and muscles.

Features of winter running shoes

Sneakers for frequent running in the winter in the snow should be as one with the athlete, his continuation and the leading component, which will improve the quality of passing the distance, and not slow down this process. Some inexperienced athletes, wanting to save money, try to find cheaper analogues of winter shoes or purchase ordinary spikes. Such shoes are not suitable by definition, since they not only have an excessively thin sole, but also slip excessively. The main qualities that winter sneakers should have are as follows:

  • The presence of protection against moisture;
  • Good ventilation;
  • Waterproof;
  • The presence of a heater;
  • Strong, well-flexible sole;
  • Anti-slip coating;
  • The presence of rubber or removable spikes.

The choice of sneakers should be based not only on personal preferences in beauty and brand. Good winter shoes should sit comfortably on the foot, the toe and heel should feel free and move smoothly. A fairly common problem happens when the shoe is not fitted correctly and the runner feels numbness in the front of the foot, which gradually turns into pain.

What should I look for when choosing running shoes for winter running?

Sports shops, websites and markets offer a huge number of models of all kinds of winter sneakers. But how do you really choose among them? correct and high quality shoes which will be perfect for you? Going for winter sneakers, inspect each model in detail, sensibly assessing its advantages and disadvantages. An important point is the region of residence. The climatic features of the winter season should also be taken into account when choosing winter running shoes.

Material

The material in winter sneakers should be much more solid than in the summer model. Despite the fact that the latter option passes air well, it is not able to protect the legs even in slight frosts.

Leather sneakers should be avoided, as they absorb moisture incredibly strongly. Reagents and salt, often poured everywhere in winter, instantly corrode and spoil the skin. After a few such runs, there will be no trace of your shoes left.

Opt for running shoes lightweight and waterproof material. The best choice would be a membrane material with additional insulation.

Protection

Moisture protection- a must-have item in winter sneakers. It comes in two main varieties.

Water repellent membrane- sneakers with such a coating are suitable for those whose winter is mostly warm, accompanied by slush and not too low temperatures. Similar shoes can be used for running in late autumn or early spring.

Absolutely waterproof- such shoes are used. These sneakers are absolutely not afraid of snow and any humidity.

Sole

Winter footwear brands offer models with different types of soles. So, the buyer can choose for himself sneakers with rough or rubber spikes. An alternative option would be an ordinary flexible sole, which is in no way inferior to fashionable and sought-after spikes.

Additional elements

It is desirable that winter shoes are present reflective elements. In early winter mornings and evenings, visibility is quite poor, which creates additional difficulty and danger for runners. The athlete runs the risk of being hit by a cyclist, a motorist. To prevent this from happening, you do not need to be afraid to look funny. In this case, any potential danger to the health and life of the athlete should be reasonably assessed.

Differences between women's and men's running shoes in winter

Women's and men's winter running shoes for daily running are different from each other anatomical features of the foot. The female foot, as a rule, has more modest dimensions - the size of the foot and its width. In this regard, shoe manufacturers are trying to take into account all the differences between the female and male anatomy.

Running shoes for men have a wider last than women's shoes. This parameter is very important for proper fixation of the foot relative to the sole.

Cushioning in women's and men's running shoes is also completely different. If a girl tries to carry out the usual run, but in men's sneakers, she will feel tension in her foot and even an unpleasant, pulling pain in her ankle. It is the different depreciation that is the cause of this phenomenon. So, women's running shoes have more pliable and soft cushioning in the toe and heel of the running boot. Men have more weight, and accordingly, the cushioning of their running shoes is stiffer.

Women's sneakers have one very clear difference from men's. The heel in women's running shoes is slightly raised and forms a kind of platform. This element is necessary to maintain the health of the weaker and more vulnerable Achilles tendon in women.

In the development and production of men's and women's winter shoes, global brands focus on lightness, flexibility, strength and moisture resistance of the material, as well as good grip of the sole with a slippery or wet underlying surface.

Studded sneakers for winter running: advantages and disadvantages

Studded winter shoes are comfortable enough for long distance runs and long workouts on frozen ground. They, like any type of footwear, have not only advantages, but also disadvantages. The main advantages of sneakers with spikes are as follows:

  1. The spikes do an excellent job with a wide variety of soil conditions in winter, whether it be ice, snow, puddles or frozen, dry soil.
  2. Special winter running shoes for training have a thick sole. This is the main difference between winter studded boots and the usual summer studded boots. Ordinary summer sneakers with spikes are not suitable for jogging in winter. This is due to the thin sole, which quickly freezes in sub-zero temperatures.
  3. The spikes on winter sneakers can be easily removed. This makes it possible to adjust your shoes to the weather conditions or a certain type of training.
  4. Despite the significant thickness of the soles of winter studded sneakers, high-quality models are highly flexible and perfectly follow the shape of the foot while walking and running.

The disadvantages of the winter version of studded sneakers include the following parameters:

  1. Running takes a lot of effort. This is due to the fact that the thick sole and additional spikes make the shoes much heavier.
  2. The chance of tripping increases. Spikes are not as insidious as chains, which can even make you fall off your feet, tripping over a branch lying on the ground. But still, a tired runner by the end of the workout can unsuccessfully catch on the unevenness of the soil with a spike and get injured.
  3. Not all models of sneakers allow you to unhook the spikes at will. When it is cold and dank outside, the spikes will interfere, and the summer version of sneakers is still inappropriate, this parameter greatly complicates the task of choosing sneakers for the weather, because it is not possible to unhook the spikes.
