08:00 Plane crash in Colombia: first data

It is reported that a plane from Brazil crashed in Colombia with more than 80 people on board, including footballers from the Chapecoense team from the city of Chapeco, playing in Serie A of the Brazilian championship. Athletes were heading to the final match of the South American Cup against the local Atlético team.

The plane crash occurred at 22:15 local time (07:15 Kyiv time Tuesday, November 29).

According to the Antioquia Department of Flight Safety, the plane disappeared from radar screens near Mount El Gordo.

In Colombia, near Medellin, a plane crashed with 72 passengers, among whom were footballers from the Brazilian club Chapecoense, who were to take part in the first final match of the Copa Sudamericana against the Colombian Atlético Nacional.

Right now, 75 deaths are known. The full list of people who got on board is known - in addition to the players and the crew of the aircraft (there were 9 crew members), the leaders of Chapecoense, the coaching staff, technical staff, journalists and honored guests were present. Among the passengers was the son of Paulo Paixao, former CSKA fitness coach.

What team crashed?

Chapecoense is a little-known team in Russia, there are no players familiar to our fans playing for it. Chapecoense languished at the bottom for a long time, in Serie D, left it in 2009, and in 7 years reached the final of the South American Cup. This fall, Chapecoense reached such a high point for the first time in history. The match in Colombia was to be the most important in club history ...

How did it happen?

Citing Colombian sources, the Brazilian Globo reports that the plane lost contact with the ground shortly after midnight and crashed 30 km before its scheduled arrival. Controllers lost contact with the pilots as the plane flew over the cities of La Seja and Aberhorral. The missing aircraft began flying at 15:35 local time from Sao Paulo, landing in Eastern Bolivia, in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. The plane crashed in the city of La Union, 30 km from Medellin.

It did not explode largely thanks to the efforts of the crew - the pilots knew that the plane was running out of fuel and circled over the area. If not for this, the explosion would have been inevitable.

The first pictures have already been received from the scene.

Why did this happen?

Mayor of the City of La Seja Elkin Ospina stated that the cause of the plane crash was a lack of fuel. Another version, in an official release from the aviation authorities, says that the plane crashed due to electronics failure.

What was the team flying?

The Chapecoense flew on charter aircraft CP-2933. At the beginning of the month, the Argentina national team flew on it.

During the fall, the plane split in half. It is important that the SR-2933 has already suffered 10 air crashes, and most of them during the landing approach.

What do they say at the scene?

The rescue operation at Medellin airport is carried out by more than 90 rescuers from nearby cities - La Union, Rionegro, El Carmen de Vibroal and La Seja. Heavy rain complicates the situation. A state of emergency has been declared in the city, and Air Force helicopters are searching for surviving passengers. "It's hard to find survivors, it's wooded," says Hugo Botero Lopez, Mayor of La Union.

“We are working with local authorities in connection with the emergency situation that occurred with the Chapecoense aircraft,” the airport tweeted.

What do they write in Brazil?

Chapecoense published a short message on their official Facebook page: “Given the conflicting reports coming from various journalistic sources regarding the crash of the plane carrying the Chapecoense team players, we refrain from commenting and await official statements from the Colombian air authorities. May God be with our athletes, leaders, journalists and other members of the delegation.”
Flamengo's official twitter added the Chapecoense logo to their avatar and wrote: "The whole nation is with you."

Are there survivors?

Yes. Protector rushed to La Seja hospital Alan Ruschel rescued from the wreckage of the aircraft. It is reported that Alan has multiple fractures of bones, hips, lacerations of the head. In the hospital, he asked the doctors to keep his wedding ring, asked about the condition of loved ones. His wife, Amanda Ruschel, wrote on her Instagram: "Thank God Alan is in the hospital in a stable condition."

The second survivor is the Chapecoense goalkeeper Danilo Padilla. It is surprising that before the flight, Rushel posted his photo from the board on Instagram - just with Danilo. The third - Jackson Vollmann. Defender Neto was hospitalized with a severe head injury.

Another survivor already taken to the hospital is a flight attendant Jimena Suarez.

Another 9 Chapecoense players, according to Globo Esporte, did not fly to the match and avoided a plane crash.

On board the passenger liner, which crashed in Colombia, there were 81 people along with the crew, including the players of the Brazilian football club. During the search and rescue operation, survivors were found, but the exact number is not yet known.

The messages that began to appear in the first hours after the crash gave hope. There are survivors. True, for a long time they could not give exact numbers. Later, the first names appeared. So, one of the Colombian radio stations reported that among the survivors was Alan Ruschel, the defender of the Chapecoense football team. He has a broken hip and a head injury. The goalkeeper Danilo Padilla and one of the flight attendants also survived.

“Soon the doctors will bring the surviving stewardess, her condition is stable. It is very difficult to get to the crash site, ordinary cars will not reach there. It's great that there are survivors, there are a lot of them, but we can't say how many exactly,” said one of the rescuers.

Then the information about a large number of survivors was refuted by the authorities. Only six were taken to the hospital. Already in the hospital, one of the patients died. But a few hours later - another urgent message from Colombian radio: "Authorities confirm the discovery of another survivor." At the same time, they say that we are talking about the Brazilian football player Eliu Zampier Neto.

According to official figures, 75 people died. In total, there were 72 passengers and nine crew members on board the crashed aircraft.

Here on the video frames you can see how the liner disappears from the radar screens. The plane was bound for Medellin, the second largest city in Colombia and its industrial capital. Football players of the Chapecoense club flew there to play for the Copa Sudamericana with the local Atlético Nacional. The match was scheduled for tomorrow.

The footage posted on YouTube was filmed at the airport of departure in the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. On them, the players are preparing to land. Footage captured by survivor Alan Ruschel inside the plane has also surfaced. He shows the passengers sitting next to him. There is also a photo taken today in the locker room of the team. There are three players on it who did not fly to the game in Colombia.

The mayor of Medellin, Federico Gutierrez, today addressed with words of condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

“It is very sad to confirm such information. All that can be done now is to help the work of doctors and rescuers. This is truly a tragedy. This is hard to imagine. We want to express our support to the families of the fallen football players from Brazil,” said the mayor

Local media say that there was bad weather in the disaster area. According to the administration of the airport where the plane departed, the crew reported the emergency at ten o'clock in the evening local time. In Moscow at that time it was six in the morning. The crew announced a malfunction in electrical equipment.

The tragedy happened in the morning Moscow time, when the plane traveled most of the way to Medellin International Airport in the Colombian capital Bogotá.

There were 81 people on board, of which nine were crew members and 72 were passengers. Among the passengers were 27 Chapecoense footballers, as well as members of the club's delegation and journalists.

The exact number of victims is not reported at the moment, and in the club's Facebook group, fans leave messages with the hashtag "live" on the wall.

The actions of rescuers are complicated by the fact that the plane crashed in a mountainous area, however, in one of the Colombian hospitals, they first reported the arrival of five passengers who survived the accident, and then another five.

Radio station 360 Radio Colombia reported that the crew of the charter flight gave ground services a low fuel signal. The pilot made a decision to make an emergency landing, but the plane did not reach the nearest airport and crashed in the La Unión area, 37 km from its destination - the city of Medellin.

In addition, the first photos from the scene appeared on the network. One of them shows the emblem of the Brazilian club.

According to the latest information, between ten and 16 people survived, and among them there are definitely three Chapecoense players: Alan Ruschel, Danilo Padilla and Jackson Vollman. At the same time, it is reported that at least 25 people have already become victims of the tragedy.

The fact that the plane's electronics had failed was known to dispatchers even before the crash after a message from the pilot, who then circled over the ground for a long time, choosing a place for an emergency landing so that the plane would not explode on contact with the ground, which helped some passengers survive.

Chapecoense was founded in 1973, is a five-time champion of the state of Santa Catarina and is now ninth in the ranking of the Brazilian Football Confederation.

In 2013, the club from Chapeco, having finished second in Serie B, returned to the elite national division after 35 years.

Interestingly, the first place that year in the Serie B championship was taken by the most titled Brazilian club Palmeiras, which this season, a round before the finish of the championship, scored the ninth victory in the Brazilian national championship.

It was in the match against "Chapecoense", which currently occupies the ninth place in the championship table, "Palmeiras" and issued the title, winning with a score of 1:0.

Chapecoense, after returning to the elite, first took 15th and then 14th place and, following the results of the 2015 season, qualified for the second most important club tournament in South America - the Sudamericana Cup.

According to the rules of the tournament, the Brazilian teams start in it from the second stage with confrontations with their compatriots. To break into the main draw, Chapecoense had to overcome the resistance of Cuiaba from Serie C, which was done, although not without difficulty (0:1, 3:1).

In the main round, Chapecoense first faced Independiente of Argentina and advanced to the quarter-finals after two goalless draws and a penalty shoot-out win.

In the quarterfinals, the Brazilian team beat the Colombian Junior (0:1, 3:0), and then in the semifinals, due to a goal in a foreign field, they were stronger than the Argentinean San Lorenzo (1:1, 0:0).

In the final, Chapecoense was supposed to meet with another Colombian team - Atlético Nacional. The first meeting was scheduled for November 30 and was to be held in the Colombian capital, and on December 7, the opponents were to play in Chapeco.

The fate of the final is currently unknown, but, apparently, CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) will cancel the confrontation, and the winner will not be revealed this year.

The most famous Chapecoense football player is a midfielder who played for Atlético Madrid from 2007 to 2010.

The only legionnaire of the team, the 28-year-old Argentine in 2012, played 13 meetings for the Spanish Villarreal, scoring one goal.

The most promising footballer of the team is the Brazilian youth team player, bought before this season from Gremio by German Hoffenheim, but loaned to Chapecoense.
