Euroleague, NBA, World Championship, European Cup, VTB United League – the 2017-2018 basketball season will delight you with many interesting international competitions! The competition will cover a huge number of participants, including teams from Russia. Our country boasts the strongest club teams, as well as a good female / male national team. Therefore, the new basketball season will not be foreign to Russia!

Basketball Competition Calendar 2017 – 2018

  • August 31 - September 17, 2017: European Championship 2017 (men);
  • October 5, 2017 – June 10, 2018: VTB United League 2017/18;
  • 11 October 2017 – 16 April 2018: Eurocup 2017/18;
  • October 12, 2017 – May 20, 2018: Euroleague 2017/18;
  • October 20, 2017 - June 2018: NBA 2017/2018.

This is the schedule of the most important basketball events. Let's consider each of them separately.

FIBA European Championship 2017 for men

The continental championship will be held from August 31 to September 17. The host countries of the competition will be Finland, Israel, Romania and Turkey.

24 national teams will take part in the tournament, including the Russian team. Our basketball players were drawn into Group D by lot. This is how the sextet looks like:

  • United Kingdom;
  • Russia;
  • Serbia;
  • Latvia;
  • Turkey;
  • Belgium.

The group is complex. But our guys are not a miss. Therefore, they must take one of the top 4 lines, allowing them to reach the playoffs.

Last time championship medals were submitted to our team in 2011. At the 2011 European Championship in Lithuania, the Russians took bronze. But the fans remember the triumph of 2007, when Russia won gold medals. Isn't it time to loudly remind yourself again?!

VTB United League 2017/18

The 9th draw of the open tournament will bring together 13 national teams from Russia, Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia and Kazakhstan.

The regular season is scheduled from October 5, 2017 to May 12, 2018. According to its results, 8 teams will compete for 4 tickets to the Final Four, which will be held on June 8-10, 2018.

The main contenders for victory are Russian clubs. To be more precise - the great and terrible CSKA. Who is able to stand across the domestic supergrand? So far, only Khimki near Moscow managed to do this in the 2010-2011 season. League fans have been waiting for a sensation!

Basketball Eurocup 2017/18

Second in importance club tournament Europe. In the new edition of the competition, 24 PBKs from Turkey, Germany, France and other countries will clash. Russia will be represented by three teams: Kazan UNICS, Krasnodar Lokomotiv-Kuban and St. Petersburg Zenit.

Domestic teams perform quite well in the tournament. The last time a triumph in the Eurocup was celebrated by Khimki. This happened in the 2014/15 season. Until that moment, the championship gold was won by Dynamo (Moscow), UNICS and Lokomotiv-Kuban.

Basketball Euroleague 2017 – 2018

The most important club event in Europe! 16 RBCs will take part in the 16th edition of the competition. From October 12, 2017 to April 6, 2018, the teams during the regular season will challenge 8 spots in the playoffs. Based on the results of the elimination games, the participants will be determined Final four. The culminating matches will take place in Serbian Belgrade from 18 to 20 May 2018.

Russia will be represented by two clubs - CSKA and Khimki. Fans most of all hope for the strength of the Moscow “army”. Basketball players of the capital's PBK have won championship medals more than once. According to the results of the last edition, Muscovites took bronze. But the capital's “soldiers” are not the guys for whom bronze is the ultimate dream! CSKA is a 7-time winner of the Euroleague. AT recent history Muscovites won the gold of the tournament 3 times: in 2006, 2008 and 2016. So the fans have the right to expect another award from the famous club in the new draw!

NBA 2017 – 2018

In mid-autumn, the main club world championship will start. The regular part of the season will take place between October 20, 2017 and April 11, 2018. Matches in the playoffs will begin on April 14, 2018. Culminating matches between the champions of the West and the East will be held in June.

For obvious reasons, you will not find domestic clubs in the National Basketball Association. But in the best league in the world there is a tiny Russian diaspora, the main character of which is the Brooklyn Nets player Timofey Mozgov. Isn't this a reason to follow the ups and downs of overseas basketball tournament?!

In the final match of the EuroBasket group stage, the Russian team met with the British team. Basketball in Foggy Albion is inferior in popularity even to hockey, not to mention football or rugby. For a long time they could not even assemble a single British team. Teams from Scotland and Wales generally preferred to play in the third division of European basketball with such formidable opponents as the teams of Moldova and San Marino.

How to subdue jumpy guys?

Before the home Olympics, in order not to lose face, the British were looking around the world for players with necessary passports. Even NBA star Luol Deng, who is considered the most underestimated player in the world's strongest league, was persuaded to play. At the Olympics in London, the British played with dignity, but since then they have not been able to gather the strongest under the banner of the national team. So they brought to Istanbul a rather motley company of legionnaires playing in the championships of Germany, Greece, Spain and France, two basketball players from the Scottish Glasgow Rocks and defender Kyle Johnson from the London Linting team. True, this "London" is based in Canada.

The British lost all four previous matches in Istanbul, and even a sensation in the meeting with the Russian team would not have helped them stay at EuroBasket. They could only slam the door. The team of Sergei Bazarevich definitely needed a victory in order to take first place in the group with the help of the Turkish team.

The day of rest was good for our players. The satiety with basketball, which was noticeable at the end of the match with the Latvian team, is gone. The team looked fresh, and the rivals did not set serious tasks for our basketball players. In the starting five, together with Andrei Vorontsevich, the classic “third” and “fifth” numbers Nikita Kurbanov and Timofey Mozgov came out. The UK national team is dominated by dark-skinned bouncy guys. So Sergey Bazarevich decided to release more "big" ones.

Fans chanted: "Don't relax!"

In attack, the British looked good. Especially Murray. Just don't think that tennis player Andy changed his sports specialization, but in Scotland this is a popular surname. So Garret Murray found a place in the UK team. In defense, the British did not play at all. They allowed us to throw ours from behind the arc without resistance, deliver the ball under the shield to Mozgov, play combinations with the withdrawal of a free player to throw.

Alexey Shved and his partners feel at ease in such a game. Much to the break, the Russian team scored 9 three-pointers with a 53 percent hit. True, we won only 12 points. At some points, Russian basketball players played in public. Bazarevich even raised his voice to stop this Harlem Globtrotters. Spectacular things can be afforded at "+30" a minute before the final siren.

Help in educational work coaching staff Russian fans also provided. They chanted: "Don't relax!" Moreover, they helped Vorontsevich return to the game, for whom at first not everything worked out. But by the big break, Andrey had three “threes” in his asset. As much as the Swede.

In the third quarter, the British added a little in defense. In any case, they did not allow Mozgov to hammer slam dunks, as in the NBA. Taking into account the fact that not all long-range shots flew, as in the first half, the advantage of the Russian team began to melt. The fans again chanted: “Don't relax!”, and Bazarevich, with the score 54:48, took a time out and released such experienced fighters as Semyon Antonov and Vitaly Fridzon onto the court. The British, meanwhile, reduced the gap to three points. Now they have gone long-range shots.

Kirilenko refused the talisman

The Swede was seated on a bench, the Globetrotters stopped. The Russian team improved in defense, began to value the ball in attack, and Mozgov took rebounds several times on someone else's shield. By the last break, Bazarevich's team was leading with a difference of only "+7". Although she could already remove all questions about the winner of the match.

The fan sector was even forced to correct the instructions. Now the tribune was chanting: “We play calmly!” But what kind of calm is there when the Swede didn’t have shots?! Five and a half minutes before the siren, with the score 64:60, Bazarevich again had to take a time-out.

Calm did not come. Vorontsevich's technical foul cost the Russian team dearly. In one attack, the British scored 5 points and reduced the gap to a minimum. At this difficult moment, Shved's "threes" came to the rescue. Two minutes before the end of regular time, the British coach took a time out to explain how to win back the five-point gap. At this time, the EuroBasket mascot was trying to persuade Andrey Kirilenko to make a throw ... on the basket of the Russian team. The President of the RSE did not show the British what to do in the end.

But Bazarevich explained how to defend himself. In general, it was possible to avoid a very valid ending. Even a two-digit difference in the score was provided by the final siren. True, by this time the Russians had not demonstrated feints in the Globtrotters style.
