Chuck Norris what sport? The hero of the movie "Rocky" really existed. What is the name of Chekhov's story?

In the summer of 1970, the last fight of Sunny Liston, one of the best heavyweights of the last century, took place in New Jersey. He beat Chuck Wepner for eight rounds, and in the ninth the fight was stopped by the doctor - Wepner was simply blind due to numerous bruises and cuts. It was scary to look at him after the fight - a broken nose, jaw and 72 stitches that had to be placed in the hospital.

After such fights and injuries, many end their careers. At best, they begin the path to its completion. But for Wepner, this meat grinder was just the beginning. Chuck received the nickname of the Bayonne Bloodletter and the fame of one of the most fearless fighters of those years, because he was ready to continue the fight against Liston even in this condition.

Thanks to a streak of eight victories and promoter Don King, with whom Wepner had a good relationship, in 1975 he received a fight against the legendary Muhammad Ali.

Ali was then at the peak of his career. In January 1974, he took revenge on Joe Frazier, nine months later he knocked out George Foreman and became the owner of two major heavyweight titles - WBC and WBA. For the next fight, Ali needed a simpler opponent - one who would not collapse on the floor after the first good hit, but would not cause big problems either. Wepner, 36, was perfect for the role.

After having the best training camp of his life—more than six months of preparation in the Catskill Mountains—Wepner was ready to take on the ultimate champion. Even if no one believed in it except him, before the fight the bookmakers’ bets in Ali’s favor were 40 to 1.

The fight between Ali and Wepner took place on March 24, 1975 in Richfield and the first 8 rounds developed quite predictably: the challenger did not give up, but lost without a chance on points. The historic moment came in the ninth round when Wepner knocked Ali down, shocking 15,000 spectators at Richfield Coliseum and hundreds of thousands on television.

Ali won the next 4 rounds, in the 15th he finished the fight with a victory by technical knockout (the referee stopped the fight after a knockdown, although Wepner tried to get up and continue the fight), and after the fight he stated that he fell not from a missed blow, but after losing balance - the opponent stepped on on his leg. But no one cared anymore. Wepner, in whom no one believed, gave a fight to the legend of world boxing - everyone was discussing only this.

Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone watched the fight between Ali and Wepner on TV. He was so impressed by what he saw that that same evening he began writing the script for a new film, which would center on the story of not the most talented and successful, but a very brave and persistent boxer who rose from the bottom to the very top.

The film was called “Rocky” and was released with great success in 1976: $225 million at the box office and three Oscar awards, including Best Picture.

Stallone did not hide the fact that Wepner influenced the appearance of the film and even offered him one of the roles in the continuation of the franchise (the boxer ultimately did not pass the casting), but he clarified that Chuck is not a direct prototype of the main character of “Rocky.”

“The Rocky Balboa story is not a direct Chuck Wepner story. This is a collective image. It has both Rocky Marciano and Joe Frazier in it. And, of course, Wepner, yes. It was his fight with Ali that inspired me to write the script. I was impressed when Ali hit the floor. I imagined how Wepner felt at that moment. Something that everyone wants to feel at least once in their life,” says Sly.

Three decades later, with Wepner's alcohol business in deep decline, he went to court in New York, demanding $15 million in compensation from Stallone. According to Chuck, he is the prototype of the main character of the Rocky film series, which brought Stallone more than $1 billion in profit. The lawsuit was eventually settled out of court, as Stallone agreed to pay Wepner compensation. Its size was never announced.

Wepner's name later ended up in a big movie. In 2011, the documentary The Real Rocky was released, chronicling his career. And this fall, the Russian premiere of the feature film “The Bleeder” (Chuck) directed by Philippe Falardeau took place. And here the story of Wepner, an ordinary boxer who almost knocked out Muhammad Ali himself, became not just a legend for the plot - it is a biographical film that tells about the life and sports career of Chuck.

“It means a lot to me that this movie came out,” Wepner said after the premiere of “Bleeder.” “I still insist, I just know that without me there would be no story about Rocky Balboa.” But now I'm glad that people can know my personal story. After all, my life is not just one evening in the ring with Muhammad Ali. Even though he influenced her greatly.”

Combat sports attracted and attracts many people. They are especially popular among children and teenagers who, by enrolling in one or another section, want to learn how to fight, become strong and courageous. Of course, these qualities are basic in all types martial arts. But the ultimate goal, of course, is not to raise a person who only knows how to fight well. It would be sad if young people who train in karate, boxing, judo and sambo spent their entire lives in gyms, practicing throws or strikes. Fortunately, this doesn't happen. Someone, for example, becomes a businessman, someone an actor, and someone a politician. And others reach heights both in sports and in their profession. These are the people we will talk about today. They all have different professions, lived and are living in different countries. But they all have one thing in common - they all were or continue to be involved in sports. martial arts.

Let's start with karate. Popular actors such as Chuck Norris, Dolph Lungren, and Jean-Claude Van Damme practiced this sport. They all came to cinema with years of training and performances in sports competitions. Chuck Norris was once a multiple world karate champion. He was brought to the cinema by the well-known Bruce Lee, who, although not an active athlete, was a good kung fu master. Chuck Norris's first day of filming could have been his last. He showed up to filming with a huge black eye and a damaged jaw: the day before, Chuck had defended his world title. Fortunately, everything worked out for Chuck Norris, and filming was a success.

There are also many domestic karate actors, such as Alexander Lykov (“Streets of Broken Lanterns”, “Turkish Gambit”), Igor Livanov (“Destroy the Thirtieth”, “On the Corner of the Patriarchs”), Dmitry Pevtsov (“Nicknamed the Beast”, “Gangster Petersburg”), Alexander Inshakov (“Crusader”, “Brigade”). The latter, by the way, achieved high results not only in karate (Champion of Moscow), but also in boxing (Master of Sports).

In the 80s of the last century, Talgat Nigmatullin (“Pirates of the 20th Century”), one of the first karatekas of the Soviet Union, shone on the domestic screen. Talgat, possessing artistic talent, was also a gifted athlete, as evidenced by his title of champion of Uzbekistan. The further fate of the young actor was tragic. Having become involved in the activities of a religious sect, he was brutally killed by its members for disobedience to their leader. This sad story has a bright continuation. Not long ago, filming of the series “Amphibian Man” was completed. The main role, Ichthyandra, to the great delight of Talgat Nigmatullin’s fans, is played by his son Said Dashuk.

The king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley, practiced karate. True, he needed his karate classes more for self-affirmation than for the actual use of wrestling techniques. Elvis devoted 19 years of his life to this sport and, if he had not become a popular singer, he could well have made a career as a professional karateka. According to former world karate champion Bill Wallace, Elvis was a good master and was always in excellent physical shape, even in those years when he was not able to train regularly.

Didn't ignore the eastern ones martial arts poet and composer Viktor Tsoi (leader of the Kino group). According to the recollections of his friend Boris Grebenshchikov (leader of the Aquarium group), Victor was excellent with nunchucks and loved to demonstrate his skills to his friends. Oriental classes martial arts were useful to Tsoi in the film “The Needle,” where, according to the plot, his hero often has to engage in hand-to-hand combat.

But the famous trainer Walter Zapashny’s knowledge of karate came in handy in real life. One day during a performance, one of the lions attacked the trainer. Zapashny had only a pistol with blank cartridges in his hands to scare away animals. Blank shots made no impression on the enraged lion. This is where karate skills came in handy, as well as knowledge of a predator’s vulnerable points. The artist killed the lion with one blow of the pistol handle!

Karate is also not ignored by politicians. The Minister of Emergency Situations S. Shoigu and the Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources Yu. Trutnev provide great assistance in the development of karate in Russia. Mikhail Kodanev, notorious for the murder of deputy Yushenkov, was at one time the champion of Russia in karate. Businessman and now politician Vladimir Dovgan also started with karate and is even a black belt holder. However, this title does not always reflect the real skill of its owner.

There is a tradition of presenting gift (honorary) black belts to people who do not engage in martial arts, but contributed to the development of one type or another martial arts. Thus, as President of the Russian Federation, Boris Yeltsin made a friendly visit to Korea, where he was awarded a seventh dan black belt in taekwondo. Sports commentator Daria Chervonenko was also awarded the title of black belt by friendly Koreans.

The well-known actor Arnold Schwarzenegger is also famous for his victories in bodybuilding competitions - he was awarded the title "Mr. Olympia" seven times! Quite a lot of people know about this. And in politics, Arnold was able to achieve great success, becoming the governor of one of the US states. But not everyone knows that “iron” Arnie was awarded a black belt in 2001 for his contribution to the development of martial arts. It would seem, what does “jock” have to do with martial arts? It turns out that it does, and directly. While starring in the films “Conan the Barbarian,” “Conan the Destroyer,” and “Red Sonja,” Schwarzenegger took ken-do (samurai sword fencing) lessons from the Japanese master Kiyoshi Yamazaki. And all his further film roles are teeming with an abundance of kicks and punches. This was probably counted by Arnold as a contribution to the development martial arts.

Since we’re talking about fencing, we can’t help but talk about our actors. Popular actor Alexander Abdulov was involved in fencing in his youth and even became a master of sports. His blade skills came in handy in the film “An Ordinary Miracle,” as well as a number of others. Everyone knows the artist Ilya Stoyanov from the humorous program “Town”. But not everyone knows that in his youth Stoyanov was very seriously involved in fencing and even won the title of champion of Ukraine. The artistic fame of Alexander Abdulov and Ilya Stoyanov has long eclipsed their sporting achievements. The fate of the actor and fencer Vladimir Balon turned out a little differently. He made a dizzying career in sports - world fencing champion! But in cinema, unfortunately, he is not known to everyone. Meanwhile, Balon starred in such film hits as “D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers” and “Midshipmen Forward.” Balon's main merit is that he taught fencing (on screen) to a glorious galaxy of actors with whom he starred in films. Mikhail Boyarsky and the “three musketeers” Veniamin Smekhov, Valentin Smirnitsky, Igor Starygin, “midshipmen” Dmitry Kharatyan, Sergei Zhigunov, Alexander Domogarov - all of them and many other actors owe their filmmaking skills as fencers to Ballon. Watching how the hero of Balon (always negative) loses once again on the screen to the character of Boyarsky or Kharatyan, one involuntarily wants to see what the outcome of the fight would have been if the fight had been real. I think that Balon dealt with all the “musketeers” and “midshipmen” with one left hand. (Literally, because he is left-handed).

Many celebrities have been (and others are) involved in boxing. The English poet Lord Byron, the writer A. Conan Doyle, and the actor Charlie Chaplin did not disdain this sport. The statement of A. V. Lunacharsky “Correctly staged boxing can be extremely useful to us” proves that the first People's Commissar of Education of Soviet Russia was not indifferent to it. Of the modern politicians, Grigory Yavlinsky, the leader of the movement, took up boxing

"Apple". Among the actors, Spartak Mishulin (everyone's favorite Carlson) and the brilliant Jean Paul Belmondo boxed. Everyone's favorite comedian-actor Nikolai Lukinsky was quite seriously involved in boxing as a child. So seriously that decades later, when he entered the ring in the “King of the Ring” show, Lukinsky won a brilliant victory over his younger rivals. I would like to especially mention the popular American actor Mickey Rourke (“Nine and a Half Weeks”). Unlike the vast majority of actors who were former athletes, Mickey Rourke began fighting in the professional ring at the very height of his film career. Of course, he did not reach such heights as in the movies, but he was able to win a number of well-deserved victories, which can also be considered a great achievement.

From English boxing let's move again to Eastern ones martial arts. TV presenter Larisa Verbitskaya and Minister of Rosatom of the Russian Federation Sergei Kiriyenko are fans of Aikido - the martial art of intellectuals, as it is also called. The previously mentioned Alexander Inshakov has also recently been cultivating and promoting this species martial arts. But the most famous of the aikidoists is, of course, Steven Seagal (“Niko”, “The Capture”). His life is shrouded in secrets and legends. In his youth, Seagal studied aikido in Japan, then became a coach. Then he leaves Japan, working either in the CIA or as a bodyguard for high-ranking officials. Finally, he writes the script for the film “Nico” and stars in it. In general, the film adaptation of Steven Seagal's entire legendary life, in terms of its richness of adventure, should eclipse all the films with his participation.

In conclusion, I will name two more people whom every Russian knows. We are all proud of the hero of the Russian land, multiple world champion in Greco-Roman wrestling, Alexander Karelin. His departure from sports to politics was somewhat unexpected. But you can be sure that there, as in sports, Karelin will achieve success. Moreover, he has someone to follow by example. The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, is a master of sports in sambo and a black belt in judo. He still doesn’t give up playing sports, and is always ready to go on the tatami when the opportunity arises. The principles of judo - diligence, flexibility, economy, good manners and ethical behavior - are also used by V.V. Putin in his political life.

Alexander Sashko, trainer-teacher of the highest category, Lesozavodsk

We are used to watching in fascination how the heroes of our favorite action films fight artistically. Almost every actor in this genre had sports training in the 90s. Today we remember the best of the best who achieved success both on the tatami and on the set.

In this rating, we tried to take into account the totality of merits: both in sports and in cinema. It is clear that most of the actor-fighters have not met in official fights. Therefore, it is impossible to say who is objectively stronger as an athlete. And everyone's acting is well done. And only by adding up our successes in sports and cinema did we receive this rating.

1. Chuck Norris

Sports career: Who doesn't know Chuck? Everyone knows Chuck! He is cool not only in films, but also in competitions. The data differs, but his statistics are as follows: between 1964 and 1974, Chuck Norris fought 195 fights. He won 183 of them, lost two, and 10 ended either without a result being announced or in a draw. Norris won 30 tournaments and was 6 times World Professional Middle Weight Karate Champion. And the list of his awards in other martial arts can be listed for a very long time. But, again, information about Chuck's achievements varies. In order not to upset Chuck Norris (more expensive for ourselves), let’s keep silent about a couple of “dubious” fights.

Actor career: To be honest, Chuck Norris acted and acts no more than other fighter actors. He is more busy with his martial arts school. But his roles in 23 films in Hollywood, as well as the series “Cool Walker,” made him a star, or rather, an idol! In addition, Chuck Norris graced the film “The Expendables 2” with his appearance. We are waiting for Chuck in the third part!

2 . Don Wilson

Sports career: Don Wilson earned the nickname "The Dragon" for his success in kickboxing. The history of his victories begins in 1979, when Wilson won the PKA (Professional Karate Association) championship. A year later he became the world champion according to the WKA (World Karate Association or World Karate Association). Over the next 11 years, he won this title 10 times in three weight categories and according to five organizations.

By the way, it was Wilson who received the largest prize in the history of kickboxing - 60 thousand dollars (for defeating Branko Sikatic)

Actor career:“Bloody Fist”, “Ring of Fire”, “Future Strike”, “Black Belt”, “Bloodlust”, “Die and Try” - these are just some of the films in which Don Wilson was involved. Moreover, Wilson did not remain exclusively within the framework of action films. His acting arsenal includes roles in science fiction, drama, and thriller.

3. Benny Urquidez

Sports career: Sports have been in Benny’s blood since childhood. Dad is a professional boxer, and mom has been wrestling for a long time. Received a black belt in karate at the age of 14. But Benny's main sporting successes are associated with kickboxing. He competed in various associations and achieved a record number of victories. According to various sources, he held the palm in world kickboxing for 24 to 27 years. The data is different, but this does not detract from the scale of achievements.

Actor career: Benny Urquidez appeared on screen quite often in the nineties. Urquidez starred, for example, in films with Jackie Chan - "Diner on Wheels", "Dragon Forever". At the same time, his track record includes several more interesting films: “Murder in Grosse Pointe” and the relatively recent film “1408”, which was released in 2007.

4. Bill Wallace

Sports career: Wallace's sports career was an enviable success. He won 23 consecutive bouts from 1974 to 1980 and was the PKA (Professional Karate Association) middleweight champion. And who knows, maybe he would have been successful in judo if not for an injury to his right knee in 1966, which is why Wallace began to practice karate.

Actor career: Things are a little different with Wallace's acting career. He starred in several films, such as Fight to Win, Silent Assassins, American Hunter and the TV series Cool Walker, where he played himself. By the way, he is listed in the credits as Bill “Superfoot” Wallace.

5. Dolph Lundgren:

Sports career: In Rocky IV, Stallone defeats Lundgren's character. Meanwhile, at sporting competitions, not many could defeat Dolph! From the age of 14, he studied Kyokushinkai karate and even studied a little with the founder of the style, Masatutsu Oyama. At various tournaments he competed in the open weight category, was European Champion in 1980 and 1981, and won the Australian Kyokushinkai Karate Championship in 1982. He took part in the open absolute Japanese Karate Championship. Later, Dolph became interested in kickboxing, and, due to the persistence of producers, bodybuilding. But that is another story!

Actor career: Dolph (by the way, his real name is Hans) began conquering screens in 1983. A year later, he received the role of Ivan Drago in the film “Rocky 4”, in which he showed his torso and ability to distort the Russian language. Lundgren was noticed and actively invited to filming. He gained the greatest fame as an actor thanks to his roles in the films: “Showdown in Little Tokyo” (1991), “Universal Soldier” (1992), “Johnny Mnemonic” (1995), “Peacemaker” (1997), “Cleaner” (1998) . Then he changed his role to director, and recently returned to acting in the Expendables franchise.

6. Billy Blanks

Sports career: Billy Blanks is known to some as an actor, to others as the founder of a special type of fitness - tai-bo. And in the late 70s and early 80s he was famous primarily as a fighter! In 1975 he won his first Amateur Athletic Union Champion title. Subsequently, he will win it five times, winning world tournaments seven times. And in 1982, Blanks was inducted into the Hall of Fame. In addition, Blanks holds a 7th degree black belt in Taekwondo and five belts in other martial arts.

Actor career:

Blanks made his debut as an actor in the 80s - he participated in several little-known action adventures. Then producers from Hollywood noticed Billy’s performance and invited him to participate in several top-rated films, including “Kissing the Girls,” “The Last Boy Scout,” and “AWOL.” In addition, Blanks has made several educational films about Tai Bo.

7. Jean-Claude Van Damme:

Sports career: What kind of guy was he?! Really, what kind of fighter was Van Damme? Opinions vary. Let's start with the fact that, compared to other fighter actors, he gave preference to cinema quite early. Having been practicing karate since the age of 12, in 1976 he became a member of the Belgian karate team, and on March 8, 1980, he became the European karate champion, knocking out the German Dietrich Targills. This is where the reliable facts about Van Damme’s victories end, and the myths invented by journalists begin.

Actor career: Van Damme began to conquer Hollywood in the mid-80s. With his persistence, he got himself cast in the role of Frank Dukes in the film “Bloodsport” (1988), and also tried himself in the roles of KGB officers in the films “No Retreat, No Surrender” and “Black Eagle”. Then there was Kickboxer and a number of other martial arts films. Four years later, his first successful box office film “Universal Soldier” (1992) was released, after which the actor began to be invited to more serious roles, but still with constant fights in the plot - “Hard Target” (1993) and “Time Patrol” (1994 ). Van Damme's last successful film was The Expendables 2. Then his career began to decline a little, and Van Damme is now trying to find himself in directing.

8. Mark Dacascos:

Sports career: Mark's parents are martial artists famous in the USA. Father Al Dacoscos was a martial arts teacher. He also became Mark’s coach, who, starting at the age of 7, participated in more than 200 tournaments. In 1982, he won the European and Italian Kung Fu and Karate Championships in lightweight weight, and took gold at the Karate Championships in Hamburg for two years in a row. But in the end, he chose an acting career.

Actor career: Mark has come a long way from episodic roles to leading roles. He has such works as: “Only the Strong”, “The Road”, “Holiness”, “The Crying Honorary Citizen”, “The Island of Doctor Moreau” and many others. But in the United States he is best known for playing the role of musician Eric Draven in the television drama The Crow.

9. Sony Chiba

Sports career: At a young age, Chiba was involved in gymnastics and even almost made it to the Japanese national team. But an injury changed plans and Soni, then known as Sadaho Maeda, began to practice judo. Later he began to study Kyokushinkai karate from Masatutsu Oyama himself. There is little data available regarding Sonny's success in this sport. For example, it is known that he performed at a tournament in Hawaii organized by Oyama. In addition, Sony Chiba is known to have a black belt in Kyokushinkai.

Actor career: Sonya Chiba's acting career began in Japan, where in the late 60s he even created the "Japanese Action Club", the purpose of which was to help film actors master martial arts. Chiba's filmography includes many interesting films, such as "Street Fighter". His main creation is “Doomed to Solitude,” where he played the role of Masatutsu Oyama, the founder of the Kyokushinkai style. In addition, Sony appeared in Tarantino's Kill Bill.

10. Talgat Nigmatullin:

Sports career: Perhaps Talgat Nigmatullin was not born at the best time for domestic karate. His talent in sports was revealed late. He became interested in karate while already studying at a circus school, but during this time he became the Champion of Uzbekistan and the owner of a black belt. There is information that he took 6th place at the USSR Championship. In addition, Nigmatullin was a master of sports in judo.

Actor career: The beginning of Talgat Nigmatullin’s career was not very memorable - several roles in films from the Uzbekfilm studio. Real fame awaited him later, in the role of Saleh in the film “Pirates of the 20th Century”. He became recognizable and loved by the audience. Then there were roles in the films “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn”, “Alone and Unarmed”, “Right to Shoot”. He was compared to Bruce Lee. The tragic death of Talgat Nigmatullin made the parallels even more obvious.
