Bicycle footrest. Bicycle footrest What type of bicycle footrest is best

There is no consensus on the need for a footboard, but it is safe to say that it is more convenient with it than without it. However, there are situations when a footboard is even necessary. As with many other things, first you need to understand the purpose of use.

pleasure skating

It is very pleasant to ride in the park in the evening or on weekends with friends or with a girlfriend, and it is doubly pleasant to sit on a bench and chat. And the question "where to lean the bikes?" will not occur if they are equipped with a footrest. Otherwise, you'll have to look for trees, poles, or lean bikes against a bench, narrowing down effective seating space. Moreover, if you decide to stop for rest and communication in the Volgograd steppe, bicycles without a footboard will have to be laid on their side.

Working use

With constant movement in the city on business, the use of the footboard will make stopping much more convenient. It’s good if there are bike racks at all stopping points - they partially replace the footboard. But if you urgently need to make a stop along the way, with this accessory you will not have to hug your bike or run to the nearest pole.

Tourism

Oh yes, a footboard is a must here. After all, lifting a bike loaded with things from the ground is not the most pleasant experience. On top of that, lying on your side, some things in bags can be damaged.

Just as there are no standard bikes, there are no standard footpegs. Let's analyze the differences between the footrests by type of attachment.

Attaches between the bottom bracket of the frame and the rear wheel. On most road or just inexpensive similar mountain biking there are platforms for attaching the footrest. Footrests vary in length depending on the diameter of your wheels.

However, the lack of a platform is not a problem, because footpegs have been invented for bicycles that do not have a special place for attaching them. This footboard has not only a bolt, but also a clamp placed on the lower stays of the frame. It is universal because it has a retractable mechanism, due to which it fits wheel diameters from 20 to 28 inches.

Universal feather kickstand

It is attached to the bottom feather of the frame on the left side. Has varieties.

Has more rigidity

The most convenient option for tourism. The aforementioned footpegs will not work because the load on the bike will simply tend to tip it over. With such a footrest, the bike will be very stable, and in addition to this, minor malfunctions can be fixed in the field.

Stand

An exotic thing, but known in narrow circles. Foldable, lightweight, small-sized, which is very important in tourism, when a lot of extra pounds are hung on a bicycle. Its only drawback is that you have to get it from somewhere. But the bike will stand on it, rooted to the spot, because it is placed under the lower tube of the frame.

If you do not like any of the proposed options, you will be told and shown how to make a trip yourself.

A bicycle is not just two wheels, a handlebar, a frame and a seat. Although, purely theoretically, you can get by with this modest basic kit.
However, my personal experience buying my fifth bike to date tells me that for comfortable riding you will need to spend a lot of money to tune your bike and give it personality.
Some kind of "dopa", such as a bike computer, luminous bulbs on the nipples, etc. nonsense, which the boys like so much, in my opinion, pampering.
But buying other things is really necessary and will make your walks more comfortable in the future.
If you are buying not a small children's bike, but one whose wheel size starts from 24 inches, then you will most likely buy a bare semi-finished product, without fenders, switch protection, a bell, a bottle holder, a bag, maybe even without reflectors, as well as without a footrest .
It is about the bandwagon that I want to talk about today.
There was a reason and I bought my son just the above-described bicycle semi-finished product.
And so we soon headed to the store for everything else.
When choosing a footrest for a bicycle, you need to focus on the size of your wheels. The Cyclotech CD-99H footpegs I chose are adjustable and therefore suitable for bikes with wheel sizes from 24 to 28 inches.
We have just 24.

Moreover, on my adult women's bike Stern Mira, whose wheel size is 26 inches, the exact same footboard has been on for two seasons and so far I have no complaints about it, but this is the one that I personally use because I myself I did not install it on my bike, it was installed in the service.

The whole simple package of a bicycle footrest is a piece of cardboard, which says that it is made of aluminum and what size of wheels it fits.
Well, the price tag of the store, of course. By the way, I have never seen discounts on this product.
This is what it looks like disassembled.
The problem is that on the cardboard that plays the role of packaging there is nothing about how to fix it. And therefore, when I dismantled the bicycle footboard, I twisted it in my hands for a long time, trying to figure out how to fix it after all.

Some simple schematic drawing could have been done.
In the end, I went and looked at how the footboard was bolted to my bike, after which everything became clear.
As I said, it is adjustable in height. By default, in the store, its length is set for 26 inch wheels.

In order to adjust the height of the footrest, you will need to use a hex wrench to loosen the screw and then make the footrest longer or shorter.
By the way, the key is NOT included. It’s good that I’m a thrifty mouse and I found a couple of these at home. I remember once I bought some furniture and a key was attached to it.

Moreover, the bicycle footrest can be completely disassembled, there is no mechanism in it, and how reliably it will then stand depends only on how hard you tighten the screw.
And here the first minus arises (so be it, we will not consider the absence of a hexagon).
the fact is that it is made of metal painted in black matte paint. And from the screw, and even if you don’t tighten it very hard, the paint remains completely concrete, not even scratches, but small dents on the metal itself.

If these footpegs tend to scratch so easily, then why shouldn't the manufacturer use this and put a scale here on what height for which wheel size the length should be set?
And then you have to select the "poke" method. In this case, the footrest can be severely scratched.
She attaches to rear wheel. There is no clear attachment point, the footboard is made in such a way that it is suitable for any bike model, and therefore has an adjustable mount that can be moved. I indicated the approximate attachment point in the photo below with white arrows, but plus / minus 1-2 centimeters in one direction or the other is not at all critical.

But after I determined the place of fastening of the Cyclotech CD-99H bike stand, as well as how to properly fasten it, a new problem arose.
The fact is that the screws for mounting on it must also be screwed with a hex wrench. BUT it turned out that those that were found in my house did not fit, that is, they fit in size, but with the help of neither one nor the other I could not twist them.
The key simply scrolls in the screws, while they do not move.
These did not fit, despite the correct size:

As a result, I had to first twist them with my hands, and then with ordinary pliers, carefully holding them by the caps and trying not to scratch the paint.

And given that the Cyclotech bicycle footrest has a curved shape, it was very difficult, I had to turn literally one millimeter at a time - a long and boring task.
And I also really miss some kind of rubber band on the back of the mounts, so as not to scratch the bike during installation, and just so that the footboard fits snugly and dirt does not clog under it in the future.
This is what the already fixed footboard looks like:

Looks good. Its color is universal and will suit any bike. Plus, if you're the kind of person who carries a "just in case" tool kit, you can even change the height of the footpeg somewhere away from home, for example, if you need to park your bike on uneven bumpy terrain.
Footrest stop (most Bottom part) is made of plastic, and it can also be rotated as you wish. It has a slightly bevelled surface.
As for use, the Cyclotech CD-99H footrest model is very comfortable. It can only be controlled by feet.
To lower it down, it is enough to "step on" it, and then take it down with your foot. Well, in order to raise it, you need to “kick” it up from the side, although the bike should not lean on it, otherwise nothing will happen, the stand will not move.
This will require quite a bit of tweaking.
From a practical point of view, I really like the idea of a footboard. Not everywhere now there are bike racks, and they are most often located not at all where I need to leave my iron horse.
Well, to put the bike on the ground, sorry, but I personally feel sorry for my bike to get dirty.
And therefore, for me, such an adjustable bicycle footrest is just a lifesaver.
Moreover, it can be changed to different bikes ranging from children to adults. And while driving, the stand does not interfere at all.
And if it were not for the difficulties that I had during the installation process, then I would have given her the highest score, but since everything did not go quite smoothly, I lower the rating, but I will still recommend it to my friends.
As I said, I bought the footrest for my son's new bike, and before that he rode this one

Agree, if during the journey you want to take a short break and take a break from driving, you don’t always want to look for a place where you could put your iron horse. Undoubtedly, you can put it on the ground, but you absolutely don’t want to stain or scratch your bike in this case, all you need is bicycle pegs. Made from durable alloys, this handy device ensures that your bike will stand securely and not lean to one side. The footpegs are suitable for both children's and adult bikes.

Wheels, steering wheel, pedals and a saddle mounted on the frame - this is how a bicycle is depicted on diagrams or signs, for example, bicycle parking. In fact, the bike, even the simplest one, is equipped with various attributes, necessary and not very necessary. These include all devices, ranging from the trunk with wings and ending with a bell, a rear-view mirror and a parking stand.

A footrest is a special accessory for a bicycle that gives it a stable position when stationary. There is often debate among cyclists about the usefulness of this device: some simply cannot live without a footrest, while others absolutely do not need it. Moreover, they even remove it from the bike they just bought. And if you look from an objective point of view? To what extent this accessory justifies itself, we will consider further.

Bicycle stand: where you need it and where you don't

The expediency of using the footrest is determined based on the conditions of movement. The main areas of use of a two-wheeled horse:

  • Relaxing rides through parks, sidewalks and paths.
  • City trips highways.
  • Highway travel.
  • Cycling: city and cross-country riding (hills, forest roads).
  • Cycling various directions.

For representatives of the first group, a bicycle footboard will serve perfectly as an attribute for beauty. Indeed, with simple measured trips around yards, park areas or playgrounds, it makes little sense to put a bike on. In extreme cases, you can hold it behind the wheel or lean it against something (a tree or a pole, for example). Although, if there is a stand, you can sometimes use it and not remove it from the bike: it does not ask for food, and its absence is not important.

The next group are cyclists riding around the city on "city bikes" - road bikes with one or more gears or with an installed planetary gear system. As a rule, the footrest is installed on them by the manufacturer.

Trips along the city streets are associated with some goals, for example, to work, to the store, to visit, to the beach, etc. In these cases, you will have to leave the bike in some utility room, on the sidewalk, roadside or in the yard. It is often impossible to lean the bike against something, so the footboard will play a good role in bike parking.

Let's move on to highways. who tried to raise road bike always wondered how light it is. The almost complete absence of accessories: there is no bulky trunk, shields, mirrors and bells. There will be no steps here either. What's the matter? At high speeds, the weight of the bike is very important: the lower it is, the easier it is for the cyclist to accelerate on asphalt and coast. But how much does this stand weigh? Hardly more than half a kilo, right? Yes, that’s right, but every gram is important for road racing, because when driving, its effect on speed increases many times!

Road bike without footrest

What if you need to park? There are two options: put the bike on the ground and close the rear wheel with an anti-theft cord, or tie the bike frame to a pole, pipe, tree, or, if there is a bike rack, leave the bike on it.

Cycling is a popular hobby among lovers of two-wheeled transport. Perhaps, the importance of the footrest for bicycles in this area can not be overestimated. Driving on rough terrain is associated with constant obstacles: the roads are uneven and surrounded by thick grass, ravines, steep slopes. If the bicycle is placed on the track itself when stopped, it may interfere with other cyclists or vehicles. The kickstand will help to set the bike off the side of the road, and even if it gets in the way of someone, it is very easy to move it.

The stand allows cyclists to level the bike when the trunk is heavily loaded and serves as a support around which the weight of the entire load is distributed. It is only important to find a hard surface, especially if the heel area is small.

But a loaded tourist bike cannot do without a stand

Among bikers-travelers, the majority puts the bike on a stand whenever you need to get off it to rest, eat, photograph the area or inspect for malfunctions.

Do you need a kickstand on a sports bike? In principle, if it stands idle for a long time, then yes. But in the process of cycling competitions, she is simply removed from the bikes: she is unnecessarily. For example, why is it necessary during extreme descents from the mountain (downhill), when the cyclist simply will not stop and, even more so, put the bike on. The same goes for bikes used in BMX: "dancing on two wheels", tricks on a dirt track, vert, street.

Varieties of footrests

The classification of devices is simple to disgrace: there are “carriage”, “rear-wheel”, “two-legged” steps and supports for the frame.

City bikes, designed for the city and flat primer, are already initially equipped with the first type of footrests. They are located in the bottom bracket area and hold the bike in an inclined position. As a rule, the heel of such footrests is small, which does not allow the bike to stand in the sand or on scattered small stones. Such stands do not withstand a large load, especially on the trunk, but they perfectly allow you to balance the bike if you hang a bag or backpack on the steering wheel from the opposite (mainly right) side.

Support on city road bike

Sometimes on road bikes you can see stands attached to the drive wheel. They are also present on mountain bikes. With such a support, you can load the trunk: all the weight falls on the rear wheel, and the rest of the bike counteracts the fall. This option is good for tourists: in addition to a knapsack on the trunk, you can also hang a backpack on the steering wheel on the other side, and load the middle part of the frame from it.

Not always the "rear" stands are attached to the wheel axle. They can also be put on a feather, and the distance from the rear wheel can be adjusted.

Bipedal symmetrical deliveries are very similar to their motorcycle-mounted counterparts. The shape is reminiscent of flyers. A bicycle with this footrest stands with the front wheel slightly raised. The weight of the bike and the load on it is evenly distributed between the stand and the rear wheel. Distinctive features- this is a flat position of a standing bike and a large area of \u200b\u200bstubborn heels. Cons: Enough big weight, about 600 grams. However, with a 20-kilogram backpack, such weighting will not be too noticeable.

Loaded bikes on symmetrical footrests

And finally, let's get acquainted with the so-called long footrest, or frame stands. In shape, it is a dense long pin with flyers along the edges: one for fixing the frame, the other with stops for installation on the ground. Also an excellent option for travelers, but absolutely pointless when used on city bikes.

The bike stands level, and the weight of it and the load on it is evenly distributed between the front and rear of the bike, thanks to the connection of the middle of the frame with the road surface. It is better to use on hard surfaces, in the sand the stand can get stuck and lose stability.

Nevertheless, with a few exceptions, a bicycle footboard is a useful attribute that will not interfere on the road and will help to put a two-wheeled horse, and not neglectfully put it on the ground or lean it against something. However, how to handle the bike - to put, put or lean - is a matter of habit, the main thing is that it does not cause any inconvenience.

There is a constant debate in the cycling community about whether a kickstand is needed or not. Some argue furiously that this is an unnecessary and heavy accessory that only interferes with riding, making the bike heavier and rattling along the road, others are sure that this is an indispensable thing in city trips and hiking trips.

I consider it useless to enter into these senseless disputes, based on the principle: "all felt-tip pens are different in taste and color."

Each biker rides as he sees fit. The kickstand on a race bike naturally looks silly.

If some cyclist enjoys constantly lifting his "iron horse" from the ground with 30-40 kilograms of hiking equipment - well, then so be it. By the way, the trunk with a large backpack attached to it, with such packing, experiences a strong lateral load and may not be able to endure this for a long time.

At the same time, we do not forget that every laying, even very neat, of the bike on asphalt or the ground scratches the ends, and the frame, and the speed switch on the rear wheel, may suffer.

Bicycles leaning against a wall or even strapped to a pole or tree have another bad habit. Under the influence of “otherworldly dark forces” (most often it is gravity and wind), the front wheel suddenly begins to turn and the bicycle, sometimes slowly and accurately, but most often quickly and with a roar, comes to the most stable position: “lying on its side”. Some bikers in such cases even put a rubber band on the front brake handle to pinch it and immobilize the wheel.

Therefore, let everyone decide for himself whether he needs a footrest on a bicycle or not.

For those who have already decided this question positively for themselves, we will tell you a little about what they are and for which rides which parking racks are better to choose.

Carriage or center steps.

for ordinary city and mountain trips without a lot of things and backpacks on the trunk. For children's and teenage models.

Usually they are bolted to the bicycle frame on a special jumper between the rear feathers immediately behind the carriage assembly. Almost always, manufacturers provide a ready-made hole for such fastening on this jumper.

Their advantages:

  • It is easy to mount - just fasten one bolt.
  • Conveniently located. The tears are great and the stand is already under the foot, no need to reach for the rear wheel.
  • With the right length, the bike is quite stable, as it is located near the center of gravity unloaded bike.

At touring bike, which is loaded with backpacks on a hike, especially at the back, the center of gravity is raised and shifted to the trunk. In this case, even when the bike tilts at a small angle to the side, there is a moment of gravity that tends to drop the backpack and, with it, the bike, to the ground. In this case side step on the carriage begins to play the role of a center around which the bicycle rotates and falls. This can be avoided only if you clamp the front brake, for example, with an elastic band put on it and the steering wheel.

For this option, it is better suited or on a pen. This is a more sustainable option, although not ideal.

Side steps

Also suitable for ordinary city and mountain trips, children's and teenage models. But on hiking trips, you can load heavy backpacks on the trunk.

If your bike does not have a bridge behind the bottom bracket for mounting the center stand, then only the rear side stand can be installed on it.

They come with mount

  • to the rear wheel axle
  • on pen

Mounting to the rear wheel hub is also quite simple. The screw is unscrewed on the axis, the stand itself is put on, with fixation on the lower tube of the pen, and the screw is screwed back.

These racks are very common. They are cheap, strong and comfortable. With the right height, the bike is stable both without and with cargo.

When mounted on a feather, you can choose the option of installing on one (lower) feather tube or on two tubes.

Fastening for two pipes is more stable and reliable, and the load on the pipes is less. Usually, when attaching, a rubber or plastic gasket is used between the pipe and the clamp so as not to scratch the varnish and paint.

Bipedal carriage (central)

They are also sometimes called symmetrical footrests.

These are the best bikes for long trips. They are, of course, a little heavier than their one-legged counterparts, but they have one indisputable advantage: they provide the most comfortable and stable parking of all the previous ones. It is much more difficult to tip over a bike with such a kickstand than a bike on a side stand.

True, it should be noted here that if you put your “pedal horse” sideways to the wind at a halt, then, having a large windage due to loaded bags and backpacks, the probability that it will fall is quite high and no footboard will hold it. So, always put the bike in the wind.

Some bikers specifically adjust the height of these footrests so that the front wheel does not touch the ground. Thus, a stable system of three fixed points is obtained. Two points are the legs and the third is the rear wheel. And three points, according to the laws of geometry, uniquely define only one plane. At the same time, the front wheel slightly raised above the ground saves the bike from the bad habit of falling from its turn.

One more note from life: after you fix the footboard on the bike, check that it is standing upright, without tilting to its side. If necessary, adjust the legs a little to bring the bike upright.

For an empty bike, a slight lean to the side is not a problem, but for a bike with a heavy backpack, this can lead to frequent falls.

They come with both fixed legs: move one leg - and both move together at once, and independent legs. When using them, you can put the bike on one or two legs. True, in this case it is not always convenient to use. To put the bike on two legs, you have to run around it.

When installing a symmetrical footrest, make sure that her right foot does not touch the chain at all speeds.

Footboard length selection

When choosing a footrest for your bike, in addition to mounting, carefully consider two more points:

  • to the selection of the length of the steps;
  • to the material from which it is made.

As for the length. Too short will create a large angle of inclination and drastically reduce stability. Too long - you can’t lean on the bike at all. Usually, manufacturers always indicate the size of the bicycle wheels for which it is intended.

How to check if the footrest fits the bike

Usually in bicycle shops they indicate to the bicycle which wheel the footboard sold is suitable for. However, it happens that the seller himself is not always aware of what product he is selling. How in this case to check whether the selected footboard fits your "iron horse".

For such situations, we give the values of the approximate length of the rack itself, which must be chosen depending on the diameter of the bicycle wheel. You need to measure it from the heel to the center of rotation on the bar.

These stand lengths are suitable for carriage and side steps:

  • 18" - 20 cm
  • 20" - 22 cm
  • 24" - 25 cm
  • 26" - 27 cm
  • 28”, 29” - 29 cm or more

There is no need to treat these figures as dogma. Plus, minus 1-2 cm do not make the weather, but only slightly change the angle of the bike in the parking lot. After all, you can always change the angle of the footrest a little yourself.

Telescopic footrests

Footrests with variable length and angle are convenient for both cyclists and manufacturers. One model per different sizes wheels.

They can be adjusted in length and angle, which is convenient, but, in general, is done only once when installing it on a bike.

When buying such models, the most important thing is to make sure that the mechanism for fixing the changing leg size is reliable. They come in different types: just on screws, on a twisting mechanism, etc. It is clear that poor fixation will not allow you to hold the bike, the rack will simply fold, and it will collapse to the ground.

In my opinion, it is better to buy a fixed size footboard. It is always simpler, cheaper and more reliable than all mechanisms for fixing changes in length.

An interesting nuance from the experience of cycling trips. The tourist specially set a footrest a little before going on the axle of the rear wheel bigger size. When placed on the ground, he pressed it a little into it and the bike stood more stable. He motivated his decision by the fact that he traveled off-road, and when placed on soft soil, the standard-sized rack still pressed into the ground, increasing the angle of inclination, which became menacingly large and did not keep the bike from falling. How this idea suits you personally - decide for yourself.

More look at footrest heel. She should let the bike stand. I saw Chinese racks, on which the angle of inclination of the heel did not correspond to the angle of inclination of the leg itself. When focusing on the asphalt, she just stuck up.

The materials from which the footboards are made

Everything is simple here:

Aluminum: the lightest, but more expensive than steel and more fragile.

Steel: the cheapest and very strong, but heavier than aluminum and titanium. Withstand almost any load in the campaign.

Titanium: The lightest, strongest and most expensive. Rarely seen for sale.

A few more options for "mounting the bike on the road."

If you do not want to install a stationary footboard, you can use an interchangeable crank-mounted footrest and carry it in your pocket. For example, Topeak Stand Slim Fat.

Or another option: the foldable "Click-Stand" bike stand. It is produced by one American company and is also carried separately. It costs from $ 25 and I can’t say anything about its operational properties.

But both of these options, in general, are not for everybody. As far as I'm concerned, it's a waste of money. A conventional footboard is cheaper and more reliable. And weight? So anyway, she rides a bike. And what difference does it make - it is fixed on the frame, is it in a backpack or in a pocket?

If you are not a fan of fighting extra grams and do not go on long bike trips, then a simple one with a central (carriage) or rear mount (or a feather) without length adjustment is perfect for you. Cheap, simple and reliable.

If the bike is used for long cycling trips with heavy backpacks - take yourself a bipedal footboard.
