Russian Hills is a ski jump complex built for the Winter Olympics in Sochi. The ski jump complex is located on the border area between the village of Esto-Sadok and the Krasnaya Polyana resort, at an altitude of 550-800 meters above sea level.

In the winter of 2014, as part of the Olympic Games, the Russian Hills complex hosted competitions in ski jumping and Nordic Combined.

Story

Construction site (northern slope of the Aibga ridge, territory of the complex winter views sport "Mountain Carousel") was chosen by foreign experts. The choice was due to the surrounding landscape - between two mountain ranges that protect athletes from crosswinds. At the same time, an important requirement for the construction was the harmonious integration ski jumps into the surrounding landscape.

In the name of the complex, two foreign words turn into the word "Russian": "Rus" and "Ski" (the last word is translated as "Skis").

Construction started in 2008 and was carried out in several stages - at the end of each of which the facilities were put into operation. Thus, already in 2012, the complex hosted the first Russian and international competitions: one of the stages of the Russian Cup in ski jumping, as well as stages of a similar World Cup.

Infrastructure of the Russian Hills complex

Now most of the time the infrastructure of the complex is empty - in separate days training and internal competitions are held here. The rest of the time - the complex is visited by tourists. You can visit the venues of the legendary Olympics on any day of the week, from 10:00 to 17:00. But you must first agree on the time of the tour. The tour includes visiting the sports facilities of the complex and the exhibition hall, as well as watching videos about the history of the facility.

The infrastructure of the complex includes:

  • Jumping complex. Springboards K-125 and K-95 are certified and suitable for international competitions both in summer and in winter. The launch pad includes: 36 cabins for pre-preparation of skis, locker rooms for athletes, a chair lift to the launch site. The coating of the jumps themselves is made according to the German technology for freezing ski tracks, and the mountain for landing is made of Finnish coating. Places for acceleration are equipped with ceramic tracks. Snowmaking of the zone is carried out by an automatic system. The spectator stands at the ski jumps can accommodate up to 6,000 fans.
  • Cross-country skiing track. The cross-country skiing track is organically integrated into the landscape. The length of the track is 2.5 km, the height is 650 meters, the elevation difference is up to 50 meters. The track with a width of 6 to 9 meters is equipped next to the ski jumps (in the roll-out zone).

Use after the Olympics

Since December 1, 2014, the Russian Hills complex has been managed by the Federal Center for sports training"South-Sport".

After winter Olympic Games the complex has become one of three Russian training bases (the other two are located in the Urals - in Nizhny Tagil and Chaikovsky). And in summer time on the territory of the complex, on first-class lawns, football players and field hockey players train. Baseball training is possible. Also in the complex there is a ski-roller track, where Russian skiers and biathletes.

Now the complex is used as a venue for stages of various competitions of the Russian and international levels. In October of the "Olympic" 2014, the Russian summer championship was held at the "Roller Hills".

In 2015, one of the stages of the international Grand Prix in Nordic Combined and the Continental Cup were planned. But all competitions were canceled, most likely due to financial problems.

An interesting building is the "Roller Hills", which were created by analogy with the American ones. However, this facility has all the advantages for sports. From the moment of development, the authors of the project predicted that this structure would become an impetus for further development such a sport as Nordic combined, and not only for men, but also for women.

So, what is the uniqueness of this springboard?

  • excellent integration into the landscape. The springboard is located near the village of Esto-Sadok, at the junction of two ridges. Thanks to right choice places, the springboard looks organically against the background of the slopes;
  • the springboard is protected from wind gusts by the slopes of the ridges;
  • Gorki Gorod is located nearby, which makes visiting the ski jump for both athletes and visitors very convenient. In the city you can stay in good 4 star hotels;
  • the building has international certification, as it meets international standards. Slides are equipped with new models of springboards K-95, K-125;
  • the possibility of holding winter and summer competitions;
  • accommodates up to 7.5 thousand spectators, who can even choose hotels in the city center, since it is easy to get to the Russian Hills.

The slides were built from 2012 to 2014. At the same time, springboards were erected in stages. Testing was carried out after each stage. After all, these are not just slopes, but also numerous elements of engineering infrastructure. In particular, it was important to work out the interaction between the security service and the facility operation service.

That is why, as the construction progressed, a large number of test competitions were held on the slides. And it should be noted that the authors of the project were not mistaken, since by 2014 the springboard was completely ready for high-quality and reliable operation.

After 2014

After the 2014 Olympic Games, the Russian Hills were not abandoned. Now there is a large training center. In addition, many tourists come not only to see this building, but also to try it out.
