The Guardians learned that the criminals of the Phantom Zone, including General Zod, were actually behind the anachronoids and used a special machine to destroy the continuum - the space-time period. Superman and the Flash were both injured during the race, and in the end, both heroes ended up in another dimension. The Flash's stamina helped him get out of the car first. He officially won the race.
The final race between Barry Allen and Clark Kent from the Silver Age comic took place in the pages of DC Comics Presents #1 & #2 (1978), which the Flash won again after an amazing time travel.
