The power of the Deadly Alliance was so strong that they destroyed many of the warriors of the Earth with the help of Tarkatans, including Kitana, the princess of Edenia. To gain even more power, both sorcerers decide to get a magical amulet that has great strength and power. Lord Raiden decided to stop the sorcerers alone, but they turned out to be stronger than the god of thunder and defeated him. Suddenly, the resurrected Onaga breaks into the palace, who also wants to get this amulet. Forgetting about their enmity Raiden, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung tried to stop the monster, but he was much stronger than the three of them. But his act of self-sacrifice was in vain, as Onaga did not receive any damage, and Shang Tsung dies in the explosion.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon

Shang Sung's soul was reborn in Outworld. Before him stood Shao Kahn and Prince Goro. The emperor was not dead, his strength was stronger than death. Centuries ago, the sorcerer pledged his soul to the Emperor and that pledge bound them even beyond death. All those who swore an oath to Kahn were to return to him again. He needed Shang Sung to reclaim the Throne of Outworld. To implement this plan, the Emperor gave the sorcerer a new body, but Sung was too weak - he needed mortal souls to fully heal and strengthen his new flesh. He finds them in Lei Chen, an Outworld city. The sorcerer absorbed the life forces of each of the peasants, who were killed one by one by Kan and Goro. Shang Sung was completely reborn and reunited with his powers once again. Together they captured the Edenian citadel, and all who stood in their way were brutally killed. Shao Kahn regained his power and became Emperor again, and Sung again took the place of the Emperor's archmage, but now his main task was to break the oath that bound them together and gain freedom. Shinnok and Quan Chi flee the Unreality once again, freeing the recently deposed Dragon King and soon forming an alliance with the Emperor and Shang Sung. Sworn enemies join forces and gather the army of Darkness for the last battle in Edenia. Their main goal is to prevent Teyvin or other warriors of the Light from seizing the power contained in Blaze. Otherwise, they were all in danger. If you complete the arcade mode of the game as Shang Tsung, he will regain the ability to transform. After killing Shao Kahn and turning into himself, the sorcerer will continue to conquer the worlds until he enslaves everything.

original chronology.

Very little is known about Shang Tsung's past. It is only known for sure that he comes from Earth, but how exactly he got into the service of Shao Kahn is unknown. According to some rumors, he was a student of the great master and secretly studied the art of black magic, including the enslavement of souls. Then he killed his master and took his soul, and the Elder Gods cursed him for it. According to other rumors, it was Shao Kahn himself who taught Shang Tsung the art of taking souls. And according to a third, Shang Tsung was cursed for cheating in the Mortal Kombat tournament. But all this is just rumors and there is no exact information.

One of the tasks of Shang Tsung in the service of Shao Kahn was the creation of a clone of the adopted daughter of the Emperor, Princess Kitana. Shao Kahn was never sure that Kitana would remain faithful to him and not learn the truth about her origin, so he ordered Tsung to create her double. Shang Tsung used the blood of Kitana and the blood of the Tarkatans, hoping to make the clone more obedient to the emperor, but something went wrong and the clone, named Milina, got an ugly Tarkatan face. Shao Kahn kept the clone alive, making her one of his personal assassins. Milina was introduced to Kitana as a sister and she had to watch what Kitana was doing.

Shang Tsung was later sent to fight for Outworld in the Mortal Kombat tournament. Shang Tsung won several victories in a row, but his unbeaten streak was interrupted by a monk from the Shaolin Order - the Great Kung Lao. Shang Tsung was forced to return to Outworld in disgrace. A few years later, he returned to the tournament with a new ally - Prince Goro from the Shokan race. Goro was able to defeat the Great Kung Lao, and Shang Tsung took his soul for himself, at the same time learning about the location of the map leading to the temple in which Shinnok's amulet was kept. A little later, Shang Tsung came up with a plan that would allow Shao Kahn to take over Earthrealm for sure. This required Sindel's soul to be reborn on Earth. Shang Tsung traded knowledge of the location of the map for Shinnok and Quan Chi's help in resurrecting Queen Sindel. True, he did not tell Quan Chi that the temple with Shinnok's amulet was guarded by the gods of the elements - their mere presence in the temple did not allow Quan Chi to simply enter the temple and take the amulet for himself. The entire operation to resurrect Sindel was supposed to take no more than 10 years.

Sometime before the start of the tenth tournament, Shang Tsung learned of a swordsman named Kenshi, who came from an ancient lineage of warrior kings. The sorcerer decided to absorb the souls of his ancestors and for this he disguised himself as an old man named Song. He played on Kenshi's pride, convincing him that he needed a special sword worthy of a warrior of such great talent as Kenshi. He led Kenshi through the labyrinth and led him to a well covered with a stone slab. Song informed Kenshi that the sword was under this slab. When Kenshi opened the lid of the well, the souls of his ancestors flew out, blinding the swordsman. Shang Tsung revealed his true colors, devoured the souls, and left the blinded Kenshi to die in the labyrinth. Also shortly before the tenth tournament, Shang Tsung fought Shujinko to see if he was worthy to take part in the tournament. The duel ended in a draw and Shang Tsung gave Shujinko permission to participate in Mortal Kombat, but he could not use it due to his mission.

After Goro's victory over the Great Kung Lao, Shang Tsung gained control of the tournament and was able to manipulate the results in favor of Shao Kahn. Goro won nine victories in a row out of the required ten, and it seemed that no one could crush the great prince-champion, but at the tenth tournament there was such a person. A young Shaolin monk, Liu Kang, was able to defeat Goro. Shang Tsung, realizing that the emperor was unlikely to spare him for the defeat, tried to remedy the situation by ordering the death of all earthly warriors, while he himself entered into battle with Liu Kang. But he failed to win. Liu Kang, using a flying kick taught by Master Bo "Rai Cho, knocked out the sorcerer. Tsung's physical shell disappeared, and with it the magic holding the island together.

Shang Tsung did not die, but ended up in the Outworld before the emperor. Shao Kahn at first wanted to kill the sorcerer, the king of the Shokans and Goro's father, Gorbak, insisted on the same, but Shang Tsung found a way out of the situation. He proposed a new plan to the emperor - to lure earthly warriors to the Outer World for a tournament and destroy them there. According to the rules, in order to organize a tournament, it was necessary that one world open a portal to another and challenge the warriors there. Shao Kahn agreed to this plan and restored Shang Tsung's youth, as only Shang Tsung could open the portal. First, a detachment of Tarkatans was sent to Earth to destroy the Shaolin temple in which Liu Kang was brought up. Then Shang Tsung himself, as well as several warriors from Outworld, went to Los Angeles to kill Johnny Cage there. Liu Kanggu, Kung Lao and Sub-Zero came to his rescue. Later, Raiden appeared, who demanded that Shang Tsung give the reason for the attack. He summoned earthly warriors to a tournament in the Outer World. Raiden agreed, since in the event of a refusal to the Earth Kingdom, a technical defeat would be counted, and the earth wars went to the Outside World.

How exactly the events in the tournament developed is unknown, but the Earth warriors won the tournament and escaped from Shao Kahn's trap. However, this tournament was just a diversion that was needed to distract the Earth warriors from Sindel's resurrection on Earth. Shang Tsung was not punished, as Shao Kahn needed him to complete the process of resurrecting Sindel. As Shang Tsung had planned, Sindel was resurrected in Earthrealm. Her soul was cursed with evil, so she became a loyal supporter of Shao Kahn. Her resurrection allowed the Emperor of Outworld to bypass the rules of the Elder Gods and claim his queen, thus beginning the unification of the two worlds.

During the invasion of Earthrealm, Shang Tsung, as usual, planned to overthrow Shao Kahn, especially since he received even more powers from the emperor to complete the resurrection of Sindel. But his plans did not come true - Shao Kahn was defeated by Liu Kang, and as a result, two large pieces broke away from his empire - Earthrealm and Edenia. Enraged, Shao Kahn put Shang Tsung in prison for several years, from where he released him to perform various tasks. But in the end, the emperor forgave Tsung and granted him freedom.

After some time, Quan Chi came to Shang Tsung's house, in the middle of the acid pool. He needed help to resurrect the Dragon King's army. In front of Shang Tsung's house, Quan Chi was attacked by a Scorpion, but the necromancer managed to fight off his attack by throwing the ghost into acid. Shang Tsung saw this duel, but did not interfere. Quan Chi offered an alliance to Shang Tsung, but he initially refused, believing that Quan Chi was too weak to be his partner. Quan Chi demonstrated his martial skills in a duel with Tsung, and he was convinced that Quan was indeed strong. After that, the necromancer explained his plan to Tsung. Quan Chi said that he would open a portal to Heaven and create a shower of souls, a solnado that Tsung could use to not only inhabit the bodies of Onaga's warriors with souls, but also to maintain his youth and immortality indefinitely. Shang Tsung accepted the offer, thus starting the Deadly Alliance.

To begin their plans, the sorcerers decided to get rid of two creatures that could interfere with them - Liu Kang and Shao Kahn. Shang Tsung, using his permission to enter the emperor's palace, led Quan Chi there and introduced him to Shao Kahn. After that, the sorcerers suddenly attacked the emperor, killing him. Kano was watching the battle going on. As soon as Shao Kahn was finished, he came out of hiding and offered his services to the sorcerers. They agreed, after which they went to a secret portal leading to Earth, the existence of which only the gods and sorcerers knew. After passing through it, the sorcerers decided to set up a trap for Liu Kang in his own home - the Wu Shi Academy. Shang Tsung, disguised as Kung Lao, was able to approach Liu Kang and attack him. But the Mortal Kombat champion was not caught off guard and almost defeated Shang Tsung when he was suddenly stabbed in the back by Quan Chi. This attack distracted Liu Kang and allowed Shang Tsung to finally avenge his defeat in the tournament. The sorcerer twisted Liu Kang's neck and took his soul. Upon returning to Outworld, Shang Tsung made a pact with two oni demons that had escaped from the Underworld. He promised Moloch and Drahmin that he would hand over Quan Chi to them after he completed his part of the plan. The demons agreed, since Quan Chi deceived them, promising to let them out of the Underworld for protection from the Scorpion, but, naturally, he did not keep his promise.

With the help of Kano, the sorcerers captured a small village in Outworld and ordered its inhabitants to build a palace on the site, in which, according to legend, a portal to Heaven could be opened. During construction, one of the villagers, named Li Mei, attacked Kano. Shang Tsung and Quan Chi invited her to take part in the tournament they organized, promising that if she won, she would be free. After the palace was built, the sorcerers brought Onaga's army there from the destroyed tomb. Quan Chi opened a portal to Heaven and created Solnado, and Shang Tsung began to revive Onaga's soldiers one by one. The sorcerers also hired Mavado from the Red Dragon clan, believing that he could be useful in taking over Earthrealm. They promised to provide shelter to the clan during the invasion of Earth. The sorcerers also offered to let Mavado fight Kano if Mavado could find and kill the swordsman Kenshi who was tracking Shang Tsung. Mavado was able to complete this task and was given the opportunity to fight Kano. After his victory, Mavado sent him to the Red Dragon's headquarters, where he became the subject of genetic experiments.

The winner of the Deadly Alliance Tournament is Li Mei. The sorcerers who promised to release the inhabitants of her village to freedom naturally lied and tried to transfer her soul into the body of one of Onaga's warriors, but the ritual was interrupted by Bo'Rai Cho, who took Li Mei with him. After some time, earthly warriors appeared with Raiden, who entered into battle with the Deadly Alliance and a squad of Tarkatans. Shang Tsung personally killed Kung Lao and Quan Chi killed Kitana. The rest of the warriors were killed by the Tarkatans who defended the palace. Of the defenders of the Earth, only Raiden survived, who, contrary to the wishes of the Elder Gods, entered the battle with Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. But he lost this fight. After defeating all enemies, the Deadly Alliance broke up - each of the sorcerers wanted to rule alone, and for this both needed Shinnok's amulet. Quan Chi emerged victorious from a short fight, but his joy did not last long.

The resurrected Dragon King, Onaga, came for Shinnok's amulet, which he needed for his own sinister plans. Quan Chi, and then Shang Tsung and Raiden, who joined him, attacked the monster, but even the combined power of the two sorcerers and the god of thunder was not enough to stop Onaga. Raiden then released his divine essence, hoping that this would destroy the Dragon King. The giant explosion completely destroyed Shang Tsung's palace, himself and the entire Onaga army, but the Dragon King himself remained unharmed and was able to take Shinnok's amulet.

Even after the explosion, their souls continued to fight in the ether until Tsung was summoned by a power even more powerful than death. Shao Kahn, who had actually been alive all this time, used the oath that all of his closest supporters had taken and summoned Shang Tsung to him. Shang Tsung appeared as a ghost to Shao Kahn and Goro. The Emperor created a new body for him in the Flesh Pits, but he needed to be fed with souls so that Shang Tsung could once again assist the emperor. To do this, Shao Kahn and Goro exterminated all the inhabitants of the village where Li Mei was from. The three of them went to storm the fortress of Shao Kahn, occupied by the Edenian troops under the command of Kitana. Like a whirlwind of magic and power, they swept through the ranks of the enemy troops, finally reaching the fortress. Bursting into the throne room, Shao Kahn prepared to fight the magicians, as the "Kitana" suddenly slaughtered them. It turned out that in fact it was not Kitana, but Milina, who took the place of the princess on the orders of Onaga. She transferred all power back to Shao Kahn, and he again became the emperor of Outworld. Although Shang Tsung was forever attached to Shao Kahn, he decided to find a way to break this connection and gain freedom. He learned from Quan Chi that there was a plan that could give the forces of Darkness great power. Shang Tsung decided to get this power, but for now he will continue to play the role of Shao Kahn's servant, directing all suspicions from himself to other members of the dark alliance. Shang Tsung planned, after obtaining this power, to break his connection with Shao Kahn, and finally become the ruler of Outworld.

New chronology.

The treacherous sorcerer Shang Tsung, who knows how to absorb the souls of his victims, has been the master of the last nine Mortal Kombat tournaments, in which he rigged the results in every possible way in favor of his master. Shang Tsung comes from Earthrealm. His magical abilities led to his discovery of Outworld. There, he became an ally of Emperor Shao Kahn, and swore his life before him in exchange for strength. Now he is bound to the emperor by powerful dark magic. For centuries, he obediently carried out the instructions of Shao Kahn. If he fails in his mission to take over the Earth, he will suffer the emperor's wrath.

As the host of the tournament, Shang Tsung decides who will fight whom. The first bout of the tournament was Johnny Cage vs. Reptile after Cage made an offensive comment about the sorcerer's age. He next appears during Sonya's attempt to rescue Jax from the dungeon. Shang Tsung first forces Sonya to fight Sub-Zero, and then tries to provoke her into a duel with him. Luckily for Sonya, Raiden appears, taking the warrior's anger on himself and later helping her rescue Jax from the dungeon by temporarily blinding Shang Tsung and his warriors. A little later, Shang Tsung shoots down the helicopter that was supposed to take Sonya and Jax off the island with a fireball and sends Kano to fight her. Sonya manages to defeat the bandit, but the sorcerer does not allow her to arrest Kano. At Sonya's request to help the wounded Jax, he only grins. Later, Shang Tsung forces Scorpion to fight the tournament several times before finally allowing him to face off against his worst enemy and assassin, Sub-Zero Sr. After his death, Shang Tsung ordered Baraka and Shiva to kill Cyrax, who was talking to Raiden. The sorcerer was afraid that Raiden could persuade Cyrax to go over to his side and jeopardize his plans. Cyrax manages to fight off the Tarkatan and the Shokan, after which he personally comes to Shang Tsung to get an explanation. Shang Tsung no longer trusts Cyrax, but Sektor promises that Cyrax, being a member of the Lin Kuei, will not let him down and fulfill his mission. Shang Tsung appoints Cyrax as Johnny Cage's opponent. Cyrax was able to defeat the actor, but did not kill him, which caused the fury of the sorcerer.

Finally, the last representative of the Earthrealm in the tournament was Liu Kang. Shang Tsung struggled to stop his imminent advancement in the tournament ladder, but Liu Kang was able to defeat all of his opponents. Eventually, it was time to take on the Shokan Prince Goro, who had been the champion of the tournament for the past 500 years. Liu Kang was able to defeat the powerful monster and Shang Tsung had to personally become his opponent. It was his last chance for success. Liu Kang overpowered the sorcerer and forced him to admit his defeat. The disgraced Shang Tsung fled the island with his allies, leaving the earth warriors to celebrate their victory.

In Outworld, the sorcerer was nearly executed by the emperor for his failure. But Shang Tsung was able to save his life by proposing a new plan to Shao Kahn: to lure the earthly warriors into the Outworld and hold a tournament there that would once and for all decide who would own the Earthrealm. Shao Kahn agreed with this idea and restored Shang Tsung's youth. Shang Tsung traveled to Earth, to the Wu Shi Academy, which was hosting celebrations to celebrate Liu Kang's victory in the tournament. There, the sorcerer suggested that Raiden hold a single tournament in Outworld, instead of the Mortal Kombat tournaments held every 50 years. Raiden, sensing an obvious catch, refused. After that, Shang Tsung attacked the god of thunder, and a portal opened in the Academy, from which a detachment of Tarkatans appeared. Shang Tsung managed to escape to Outworld, and the Tarkatans were able to capture Sonya Blade and the Academy Masters who trained Liu Kang and Kung Lao. According to Raiden, Shang Tsung made it clear that until the thunder god agreed to the terms, the attacks on Earth would not stop. Raiden decides to accept the conditions of the sorcerer and goes to the Outside World, along with earthly warriors.

During the tournament, Shang Tsung was busy making a deal with Kano and his Black Dragon clan. He was going to buy modern Earth weapons from them to equip Shao Kahn's army with them. At that moment, the Lin Kuei warrior Smoke came upon them. He tried to stop them and Kano attacked him. Smoke was able to defeat him. Then Shang Tsung decided to personally kill the Lin Kuei warrior. He turned into Sub-Zero Sr. and, together with Reptile, attacked Smoke, but they lost this duel. Sektor's appearance allowed Shang Tsung to teleport himself and the weapon out of the Living Forest to safety.

After Kitana's victory over Milina, Shang Tsung appeared, who told the princess that Milina was the result of his experiment to create a "perfect Kitana". Enraged, Kitana attacked the sorcerer, and defeated him in battle. She brought him to Shao Kahn, demanding his punishment for creating an ugly monster, but to her surprise, Shao Kahn, having heard about the clone, praised Shang Tsung for his good work and ordered the guards to imprison Kitana, and Shang Tsung to bring Mileena to him. Later, Shao Kahn orders Shang Tsung to team up with Quan Chi and fight Kung Lao, whom Raiden chose him to be the warrior who was supposed to defeat Shao Kahn. The Deadly Alliance was defeated and Kung Lao was able to continue his performance in the tournament.

After Shao Kahn's defeat and death, Shang Tsung was present among his closest associates who argued over who should be the new Emperor of Outworld. When Baraka proposed Mileena as empress, Shang Tsung said that Mileena only exists because of his sorcery, implying that he should be the new ruler. The appearance of Shao Kahn, who survived thanks to the help of Quan Chi, stops the dispute. Shao Kahn is furious that Outworld failed to consume Earthrealm. However, Quan Chi came up with a new plan - to simply take over the Earth, without holding tournaments. He manages to convince Shao Kahn that the Elder Gods are too weak and will not dare to stop him. In order to begin this plan, Quan Chi travels to Earth, where he resurrects Queen Sindel.

During the invasion, Kano brings the Cabal to Outworld, where Shang Tsung uses his magic to heal his burns from Kintaro's fire. After the death of Motaro at the hands of Raiden, Shao Kahn decides to destroy the earthly warriors once and for all. He asks Shang Tsung to approach him and then consumes his soul and uses it to greatly empower Sindel. This dark sorcerer comes to an end.

Shang Tsung is one of the most powerful characters in the Mortal Kombat universe. He was cursed, presumably by the Elder Gods, for his atrocities. The curse speeds up the aging of Shang Tsung and if he does not regularly absorb the souls of other people, he will grow old and die very quickly. Therefore, one of Shang Tsung's main tasks is to find an infinite source of souls that he could use to keep himself forever young. The ability to absorb other people's souls has two interesting side effect, both of which Shang Tsung did not fail to use in his plans. The first effect is the ability to take the form of those whose souls he took, completely copying their abilities. The second effect - along with the souls of Shang Tsung receives all the knowledge of his victims. Thus, this curse makes Shang Tsung stronger and smarter than his enemies. Although to transform into another person, Shang Tsung does not have to take his whole soul, it is enough just to absorb a small part of it.

In addition to being able to manipulate souls and transform, Shang Tsung also has the ability to control the powers of fire. During combat, he can release fireballs from his hands, as well as summon them from the ground or from the air. With enough energy, Shang Tsung can create more complex fiery constructs. For example, in the battle with Raiden in the prologue to Mortal Kombat: Deception, he created a giant fiery cobra. Shang Tsung also knows how to teleport and he is one of the few characters in the series who can open portals to other worlds. In addition to his magical abilities, Shang Tsung is a skilled warrior - he became the champion of the Mortal Kombat tournament several times in a row until he was defeated by the Shaolin Monk Great Kung Lao. Thanks to the ability to absorb souls, Shang Tsung has access to all the talents of his defeated enemies, including their knowledge of hand-to-hand martial arts, which makes him an even more dangerous opponent in a duel.

Shang Zong was the boss of Mortal Kombat, who threw fireballs (up to three at once) and could turn into any other fighter (except Reptile). He was the Viceroy of the Outworld Emperor in Earth Realm. 1000 years ago, he suddenly interrupts the Shaolin Monks tournament and announces the start of the Mortal Kombat tournament, if the earthlings lose ten times in a row, then the Outworld will capture their planet. But the Great Kung Lao managed to defeat him, thereby becoming the Champion of the Sacred Tournament. In response to this, the sorcerer calls for help the prince from the Shokan-Goro race. Goro at the next tournament takes the title of Champion along with his life from Kung Lao, and wins the next nine tournaments, thereby bringing the conquest of the Earth by Outworld closer. But the situation is saved by Johnny Cage, who defeats Goro in a decisive battle. Furious at his defeat, Shang Zong tried in vain to kill Liu Kang, but lost the fight and fled to Outworld.

Mortal Kombat II

In MK2, he became an ordinary fighter, but with the same techniques. After losing the tournament on Earth, the sorcerer asks his emperor Shao Kahn to spare his life, in exchange he offers a new plan. If they demanded that the tournament be held on the territory of the Outside World, then the earthlings would not be able to refuse. Shao Kahn agrees with his adviser and restores his youth. In order to force the Earth warriors to follow them, they kidnap Sonya and Kano, who participated in the last tournament, but deciding that this is not enough, they order the hordes of Tarkatans to destroy the Wu Shi Academy, where Liu Kang studied. Earthly defenders are sent to Outworld, and this time the Champion of Mortal Kombat managed to defeat the emperor already, putting the sorcerer in a difficult position. This time the victory was also in the hands of the earthlings.

Mortal Kombat 3 / Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 / Mortal Kombat Trilogy

In MK3, Shang Zong received a new move - a volcanic eruption. This time, the sorcerer offers his master a last attempt to seize the Earth Kingdom. According to this plan, Shang Zong, together with the shadow priests, must resurrect Shao Kahn's queen, Sindel, on Earth. Thus, Shao Kahn could easily demand his queen from the earthlings and bring his army there, after which billions of human souls would become the property of the emperor. Shang Zong was now able to restore his reputation with his master. But Raiden, the protector god of the Earth, kept the souls of the chosen warriors, led by Liu Kang. In the decisive fierce battle, the Champion of the tournament once again defeated Shao Kahn and drove his army from the Earth. It was from this moment that the sorcerer lost all trust of Shao Kahn and now he is hiding from the wrath of the Emperor of the Outer World.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance

In Deadly Alliance, he returned again as a playable boss, but lost the ability to transform, compensating for this with new original moves. For a long time, Shang Zong hid from the wrath of Shao Kahn, whom he greatly let down in conquering the Earth and maintaining power in Edenia. One day he is visited by another great sorcerer - Kuan-Chi, who offers him to rule the world together, using the mummified army of the Dragon King Onaga for this. Thus the Deadly Alliance was reborn. They plotted against Shao Kahn, killing the emperor as a result (later it turns out that it was his magical clone). Having gathered a huge number of supporters in the face of Tarkatans and former allies of the emperor, they began to conquer the worlds. But before that, they also killed the Mortal Kombat Champion Liu Kang, thereby getting rid of those who could stop them. The power of the Deadly Alliance proved so strong that they destroyed many of Earth's warriors with the help of the Tarkatans, including Kitana, the princess of Edenia.

Mortal Kombat: Deception

Lord Raiden decided to stop the sorcerers alone, but they turned out to be stronger than the god of thunder and defeated him. But then Shang Zong and Quan Chi began to fight among themselves for possession of the amulet, and Quan Chi defeated Shang Zong with great difficulty. But he did not triumph for long. Suddenly, the resurrected dragon king Onaga breaks into the palace, who also wants to get this amulet. Forgetting about their enmity Raiden, Quan Chi and Shang Zong tried to stop the monster, but he was much stronger than the three of them. Realizing that Onaga cannot be defeated, Raiden releases his divine essence, which completely destroys Shang Tsung's palace. But his act of self-sacrifice was in vain, as Onaga did not receive any damage. Shang Zong dies in the explosion.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon

Shang Zong's soul was reborn in Outworld. Before him stood Shao Kahn and Prince Goro. The emperor was not dead, his strength was stronger than death. Centuries ago, the sorcerer pledged his soul to the Emperor and that pledge bound them even beyond death. All those who swore an oath to Kahn were to return to him again.

He needed Shang Zong to reclaim the Outworld Throne. To implement this plan, the Emperor gave the sorcerer a new body, but Shang Zong was too weak - he needed mortal souls to fully heal and strengthen his new flesh. He finds them in Lei Chen, an Outworld city. The sorcerer absorbed the life forces of each of the peasants, who were killed one by one by Kan and Goro. Shang Zong was completely reborn and reunited with his powers once again.

Together they captured the Edenian citadel, and all who stood in their way were brutally killed. Shao Kahn regained his power and became Emperor again, and Zong again took the place of the Emperor's archmage, but now his main task was to break the oath that bound them together and gain freedom.

Shinnok and Quan Chi flee the Unreality once again, freeing the recently deposed Dragon King and soon forming an alliance with the Emperor and Shang Zong. Sworn enemies join forces and gather the army of Darkness for the last battle in Edenia. Their main goal is to prevent Teyvin or other warriors of the Light from seizing the power contained in Blaze. Otherwise, they were all in danger.

At its end in MK:A: After defeating Blaze, Shang Zong found himself gaining the ability to change others. Shao Kahn, angry that he did not receive the fire elemental's divine power, attacks the sorcerer. But Shang Zong turns his former master into a centaur slave and becomes the ruler of Outworld.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

Ending in MK vs DCU- Shang Zong, amazed by Captain Marvel's abilities and enraged by his defeat, decides to repeat his abilities. With the help of Marvel's blood, the corpses of Tarkatans and his magic, the sorcerer brings out in his Flesh Pits a race of supertarkatans, endowed with the abilities of a hero, but in a perverted form. Finally, after the collision of the universes, Shang Zong endowed the army of Tarkatans with the superpowers of Captain Marvel. With such an army, Shang Zong will be invincible.

He appears in Annoying Orange Vs. Mortal Kombat. The episode starts at the end of the battle where he finishes off Shao Kahn with a kick. Then after a short speech, he wonders what's going on as he has another fight coming up where he fights Orange and loses (referring to Smoke).

The speech goes like this:

“Buy me, I'm the best warrior in Mortal Kombat, I can't wait. I should call my mom and say…” Original: “Boo-Ya, I am the best warrior in Mortal Kombat, I can’t wait. I have to call my mum and say…”

Then the animation is turned on, where the viewer immediately understands that he will have to fight the Annoying Orange.

Fatality

  • Soul Reaver- in MK2, Shang Zong grabs the enemy by the neck and pulls the soul out of him, leaving only a withered corpse. In MK3/UMK3/MKT, he lifts the enemy into the air and then steals his soul, the remains of the enemy fall into a shapeless pile. In MKDA, he lifts the opponent into the air, hits him three times on the ground, while each time parts of the soul fly out of the opponent, which are absorbed by Zong, and then he throws the opponent on the ground in last time and jumps from above, knocking out the remnants of the soul from the enemy. In MKvsDCU, he again grabs the opponent by the neck, drains the soul from him, but then he throws the opponent face down on the floor and breaks his back with his foot.
  • transformation- in MK2, Shang Zong transforms into Kintaro, and powerful blow knocks back the opponent's body. In MKvsDCU, he transforms into an enemy and in this form steals his soul from him. In MK9, Shang Zong turns into a clown and fires a pistol, but instead of a bullet, a flag with the inscription "Boom!" flies out of it, after which Shang Zong shoots his opponent in the head with a real pistol. This finishing move is copied from the Joker from Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe , but here it looks more cruel.
  • internal explosion- in MK2, Shang Zong possesses the enemy. After a few seconds, the opponent's body swells up and then explodes, freeing Shang Zong. In MK9, the finishing move was partially changed: Shang Zong also possesses the enemy. The opponent's eyes light up green and he rips his head off.

Comics

Shang Zong plays his original role as the main villain in the first Malibu comic book series, Blood and Thunder. Shang Zong is presented with his backstory mostly unchanged. Although Shang Zong held the tenth tournament, he secretly plans to obtain the power of the Dao Te Zhang mystical book, which grants huge forces the one who solves 7 of her riddles. Unfortunately for him, Kano steals the books and then disappears with Goro in the air, causing him to keep the tournament going indefinitely, which pisses Shao Kahn off.

cartoons

”, played by ” Shang Zong is depicted as a sorcerer seeking revenge on the Great Kung Lao, who defeated him in Mortal Kombat. In most of the series, he was chained to Shao Kahn's cobalt mines due to his failure in the Mortal Kombat tournament, although he occasionally escaped from there using magic, as the cobalt stones do not affect him due to him being human. In the mines, he keeps Princess Vorpax as his personal slave, and generally mistreats her until she gains her mother's magical powers. In the episode "Master" it is revealed that Shang Zong was not always evil. Centuries ago, he was trained for Mortal Kombat as the protector of Earthrealm. But during the duel, he used magic, which was forbidden. Then Shang Tsung, in order to avoid death and disgrace, joins Shao Kahn. Shang Tsung was played by Bruce Locke in the series.

Shang Zong appears in the internet series Legacy, where he was played again

Mortal Kombat is one of the iconic fighting video games. The game has become so popular that films and series have been made based on it. Two feature films were released in 1995 and 1997: Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat 2. One of the series' central antagonists is an Outworld sorcerer and Emperor Shao Kahn's archmage named Shang Tsung.

First appearance of the sorcerer

Shang Tsung is a fictional character in the Mortal Kombat universe. The debut appearance of the sorcerer took place in the first version of the game, which was released back in 1992. Since then, he has been a playable character in every game except Mortal Kombat: The Trap. In that part, he was only shown in the intro, when his Deadly Alliance with the mage Quan Chi was trying to win the dragon amulet. In the battle for the amulet, the magician died.

In the very first version of Mortal Kombat, Shang Tsung was the main boss. He could throw balls of fire and transform into almost any fighter. The only exception was Reptile. The magician is able to select the souls of dead warriors. It is this skill that gives him the ability to take on the appearance of other characters.

1000 years ago, he stopped the monks' fighting tournament and announced the start of the Mortal Kombat. If the winner is a representative of the Earth Realm, then the Emperor of Outworld will not take over the Earth. If Shao Kahn wins, he will rule the planet. Victoria was won by the monk Liu Kang, who killed Goro in a decisive battle. Shang Tsung tried to defeat the new winner of Mortal Kombat, but he failed, and the sorcerer was forced to flee to Outworld.

"MK 2"

The second appearance of Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat happened a year later, when the second part of the video game series was released. He possessed the same techniques, but he was no longer a boss in an arcade game, but a simple warrior. The plot of the game begins with the fact that the magician returns to the emperor and asks him to return his youth in exchange for a new plan to capture the Earth. Shao Kahn agrees and makes the sorcerer young again.

To implement the plan, he goes to Raiden and offers new conditions for the emperor. Earthlings cannot refuse to participate in the Mortal Kombat tournament if it takes place on the territory of the Outside World. In the event that they do not accept the offer, it will mean their defeat. To be sure, the emperor's subjects kidnap Sonya Blade. In the final duel, Liu Kang defeated the emperor himself.

"MK 3" and the new plan of the sorcerer

In this part of Mortal Kombat, Shang Tsung offers his master another plan to capture the Earth Kingdom, which eventually became the last one. Buried on Earth is Shao Kahn's wife, Sindel. The mage wants to resurrect her. Thus, the emperor will have a reason to enter his army into the territory of the planet.

In the final battle, Liu Kang again defeated Shao Kahn. This caused the emperor to lose confidence in Shang Tsung, and the sorcerer was forced to flee to the Underworld.

Deadly Alliance

In this part, the magician can again be seen as a boss. However, it is now impossible to see how Shang Tsung transforms. All other skills he retained.

Hiding in the Underworld from the emperor, Tsung meets another sinister sorcerer named Quan Chi. He offers the fugitive magician an alliance, which is called the Deadly Alliance.

Shang Tsung and Quan Chi hoped to rule the world with the help of the army of the King of All Dragons. To do this, they needed to eliminate the emperor and subjugate his army to themselves. And they did it. Together, the sorcerers defeated Shao Kahn and forced his army into submission. The deadly Alliance has destroyed all the fighters who could stop them. Among the fallen was the multiple winner of Mortal Kombat - Liu Kang.

Trap for sorcerers

The god of thunder named Raiden decided to independently end the chaos that the Deadly Alliance brings to the world. But he was defeated by the magicians. Exchanging glances with each other, Quan Chi and Shang Tsung began to fight among themselves for the right to own the amulet. Quan Chi celebrated the victory in the battle. But his triumph was interrupted by the appearance of the Dragon Rabbit.

Magicians are trying to destroy Onaga. Raiden, who has come to his senses, joins them. The god of thunder realizes that even the three of them will not be able to defeat the Dragon King, and blows up himself, the palace and the magicians. However, this did not bring any benefit, since Onaga remained alive and took possession of the amulet.

Armageddon

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon has become one of the most controversial games in the entire series. A lot of new characters have appeared in the fighting game, and the plot of the game has changed dramatically. To the delight of many Mortal Kombat fans, the developers did not let Shang Tsung die completely.

After an explosion in the palace caused by the release of Raiden's divine power, the sorcerer's soul was reborn again in Outworld. The magician is reborn and sees a living Shao Kahn in front of him. All who took an oath to the emperor are obliged to return to him again. It happened to Shang Tsung too. His surprise knew no bounds, since the magician believed that he had defeated Kahn. But the emperor remained alive, and his clone was defeated.

Feeling the power once, the sorcerer wanted to regain the imperial throne again. However, he understood that this could not be done with Shao Kahn alive. And Tsung accepted it. He decided to help Kan restore power over the Outer World, and he himself agreed to once again become the supreme magician under the emperor.

After being reborn, Tsung was very weak. To fully restore his strength and magic, he needs human souls. Their source was the town of Lei Cheng. Goro and Kan killed all its inhabitants, and Shang Tsung absorbed the souls of the dead. So the sorcerer fully restored his strength. After capturing the citadel, Kahn was able to become emperor again, regaining power over Outworld. Everything returned to its place, and Tsung began to think about how to get freedom. He wanted to break his oath to Shao Kahn.

Shinnok and Quan Chi were forced to flee the Unreality. They came to Shao Kahn to make a new alliance with him to fight the warriors of Light. The Emperor, Shinnok, and two sorcerers set about building a large army to destroy Teyvin and Blaze.

The plot of this part of the game ends with a fight between Blaze and Shang Tsung on the tower. The magician kills the fire elemental and gains its power, which gives him the ability to turn everyone into any creature. Enraged by the failure, Shao Kahn attacks the magician, but he turns the emperor into a centaur and makes him his slave. After this victory, Tsung again became the ruler of the Outworld.

Shaolin monks

The plot of the game begins with the island of Shang Tsung. The old sorcerer sits on his throne and watches the fights between Sonya and Kano, Cage and Reptile, Sub-Zero and Scorpion. In the final battle, Liu Kang defeats Shang Tsung, but fails to kill the magician, who flees to Outworld. After the escape of the sorcerer, his palace began to collapse, and Liu Kang and Kung Lao fell into Goro's lair, from where the game began.

The next meeting with Shang Tsung took place at the Wu Shi Academy near the portal where he fought Raiden. Unable to withstand the onslaught of the Thunder God, Tsung flees to the Evil Monastery. After him, Liu Kang and Kung Lao ran into the portal.

The warriors went to the Tomb of Souls to deprive the sorcerer of his strength. But the monks did not have time. Once in the Tomb, they saw how Tsung restored his youth and escaped again, setting his priests on the fighters.

At the end of the game, Liu Kang and Kung Lao entered into battle with the sorcerer. The magician turned into Johnny Cage and Reptile, but even this did not help him in a fight with the monks. At the end of the battle, Liu Kang twisted Tsung's neck.

Finishing moves

The sorcerer has six types of finishing off an opponent. Shang Tsung's most popular Fatality is called Soul Stealer. The magician takes his enemy by the neck and absorbs his soul, leaving only a dried body from the fighter. This fatality has a second option: Tsung lifts an opponent into the air with one hand, and steals his soul with the other. The enemy's body turns to dust.

The second fatality is called "Transformation". The sorcerer takes the form of Kintaro and beats off the opponent's torso. "Internal explosion" - the name of the third type of finishing. The magician possesses the opponent. The opponent's body explodes, and Tsung becomes free.

In the third part of Mortal Kombat, the sorcerer also inhabits the body of the enemy, and he tears off his head. In MK3, he summons spikes on which he throws his opponent.

In Mortal Kombat 2011, the sorcerer's fatality was borrowed from the Joker. The magician turns into a clown and starts shooting with a toy gun. At the end, he makes a shot from a real weapon in the head of the enemy.

Movies

Of the two feature-length adaptations of Mortal Kombat, Tsung appeared in only one film. The actor who played Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat is Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. Throughout the film, his character does not cease to intimidate all the fighters of the Earth Kingdom. He manipulates the results of Mortal Kombat to benefit himself and Shao Kahn.

The magician enters the fight only at the end of the film. Before that, he only watches how other fighters fight, and builds his sinister plans. All hope for victory in Mortal Kombat, Tsung pinned on Prince Goro, but the four-armed leader of the Shokan army was defeated by Johnny Cage. Afterwards, Shang Tsung kidnapped Sonya Blade and dragged her to Outworld. In the final battle, the mage transformed into Liu Kang's brother to confuse the Earth warrior. But he did not believe the trick of the sorcerer and threw him off the tower onto sharp spikes.

Series

In Mortal Kombat: Conquest, Shang Tsung tried to get even with Kung Lao, who defeated the sorcerer in the tournament finals. For almost the entire series, the mage is underground and chained to the cobalt mines, where he has his own personal slave named Vorpax. Emperor Shao Kahn imprisoned the sorcerer after losing the battle.

After some time, he manages to escape from the mines with the help of his magic. In one of the episodes, it is told that Tsung was not always evil. Hundreds of years ago, he defended the Earth, but in one of the fights at the tournament he used his power, which is prohibited by the rules of Mortal Kombat. Trying to avoid execution, he was forced to join Shao Kahn's army.

In the short web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, Shang Tsung was again played by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.

One of the most popular character sayings in the game is Shang Tsung's "Your soul belongs to me".

The image of the sorcerer is borrowed from the movie Enter the Dragon.

In the Shaolin Monks game, the mage dies the same death as Liu Kang in the Deadly Alliance game.

If you hit Tsung during his transformation in Mortal Kombat: Trilogy, he will momentarily take on the form of a snake.

Shang Tsung appeared in several episodes of the animated series based on the Mortal Kombat game. In one of the animated series, he could read the minds of other people.
