Marta Kostyuk: the birth of a new star. Mom of the Ukrainian champion of the Australian Open: "I immediately realized that Marta is a talent" Marta Kostyuk biography

The most successful young tennis player in the world grew up in sports family, broke many records, performed in the Verkhovna Rada - the main facts about the rising star of Ukrainian sports.

On January 19, in Melbourne, Australia, at the Grand Slam tournament, the 4th racket of the world, a 23-year-old Ukrainian, will meet in a full-time duel Elina Svitolina, and 521st racket of the world, 15-year-old debutante Marta Kostyuk. If Ukrainian tennis fans know a lot about the first of them, then the name of Marta Kostyuk has not been enough until recently, which told those who are interested in sports "in so far as". We correct this misunderstanding.

Sport family

Martha's mother, Talina (nee Beiko), was one of the best tennis players in the country in the 1990s. She also brought her daughter to tennis at the age of 5, and now she is her main fan.

At school - in absentia

The tennis player is a student of the 9th grade, but she goes to school externally, studies on her own, only passes test papers and exams.

Trained in France

Marta Kostyuk studies at the tennis academy in Cannes (France), spending most of her time outside of Ukraine.

By the way, as a child, Martha combined tennis and acrobatics, but in the end she settled on just one sport. But the skills remain!

Cool junior

https://twitter.com/marta_kostyuk/status/953605625111494657

Exactly one year ago, Marta Kostyuk became the winner of the Australian Open. But among juniors. Nevertheless, it was very cool: the thing is. That the junior tournament is played among athletes under the age of 18, and the Ukrainian at the time of the victory was only 14!

"Glory to Ukraine!"

The performance before the fans after the victorious final ("seeded" on March 11 beat No. 1 of the junior rating, Swiss Rebecca Masarova - 7:5, 1:6, 6:4) began with the patriotic "Glory to Ukraine!"

This season is the first (full-fledged) for Marta Kostyuk in adult tennis. Although last season she already performed at adult tournaments, and even won one of them (not very prestigious, in Hungary).

Money

Over the past week, Marta Kostyuk has earned 20 times more than in her entire career! For reaching the 1/16 finals, she was entitled to $117,300 in prize money, and for all previous adult tournaments (juniors were not entitled to prize money), Kostyuk earned $6,000.

Secret weapon against Elina Svitolina?

Visit to the Verkhovna Rada

In 2016, Marta spoke from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada and asked the deputies to adopt a law on preferential taxation for entrepreneurs and businessmen who support sports. Unfortunately, this performance did not bring results.

Another record

Marta Kostyuk became the youngest participant in the 1/16 finals of the Grand Slam tournaments over the past 25 years!

Now Marta Kostyuk is only 521 racket of the world. But already on January 28, when the Australian Open 2018 ends, she will have a place in the top 250 tennis players in the world. And a big cash reward. However, she is only 15 years old. But behind her back there is already a victory at the Australian Open in 2017, junior. And in 2018, on the courts of Melbourne, she has already created a new sensation, becoming the youngest participant in the main draw of the tournament.

From an athletic family

Marta Kostyuk was born on June 28, 2002 in a sports family in Kyiv. Her mother, Tallinna Kostyuk (maiden name - Beiko), was also a professional tennis player at one time. The girl's father, Oleg Kostyuk, was once the technical director of the Antey Cup junior tournament.

However, her parents saw the future in tennis in older sister Mary. Martha did acrobatics. Tennis was in second place.

"When Marty was five years old, she came to me for training, saw that it was good with her mother, there was no need to sit at home or in the garden with a nanny, and she wanted to stay. Then we decided to create a group for children, and she began to train. Marta was engaged Together with everyone, the training sessions were three times a week, and she also did acrobatics every day in parallel, "says Tallinna Kostyuk, who became the coach of the tennis player.

In addition, my mother also worked with the girl. native brother Taras Beiko, who was the champion of the USSR in doubles and the first champion of independent Ukraine in singles.

The combination of acrobatics and tennis was until Marty was 11 years old. Then she already fully concentrated on tennis.

External training

Professional sports are difficult to combine with schooling. Until the 8th grade, Marta studied at one of the schools in Kyiv, but already from the 9th grade she switched to external studies. All due to the increase in the number of trainings, including abroad, and participation in international competitions.

“I just do my homework at home and take tests in each subject twice a year,” said Marta Kostyuk.

Coach of Marta Kostyuk and Roger Federer

Contributed to the transfer to external education and the fact that the mother decided to take Martha from Kyiv because of too close media attention to her daughter after the first victories. Fearing that her daughter would be too often distracted by sports-related things, Tallinna Beiko chose to work with Marta abroad.

Yes, and Marta herself also admits that she is afraid to come to Kyiv.

“Everything is fine right away, everyone loves you, I don’t want to train. Therefore, I try to immediately go to Cannes to the tennis academy, where I train,” the girl admitted.

In Cannes, she is coached by Croatian Ivan Ljubicic, who also recently was a top tennis player and even entered the top three in the ATP rating. In addition to Marta, he also coaches the Swiss tennis player Roger Federer. It was after the start of cooperation with the new coach that Marta significantly improved her game, which resulted in victories in tournaments.

"I seriously improved my level of play. The effective period was in May, when Ivan Ljubicic invited me to train in Monte Carlo for ten days. After that, I won the second category tournament, improved my serve and started to train more," said the tennis player.

Sports success of Marta Kostyuk

In the summer of 2013, at the TO tournament among girls under 12, Marta became the champion and in singles, and paired with Anna Molchanova. A year later, Kostyuk, as part of the Ukrainian national team, won the Europe Nations Challenge, the continental championship among 12-year-olds.

In 2016, Marta Kostyuk, as part of the Ukrainian women's team under the age of 14, together with Daria Snigur and Daria Lopatetskaya, became the winner of the World Championship in her age category.

In the same year, Kostyuk issued a series of 13 victories in a row, thanks to which she received two junior titles and ended the year in the top three of the world ranking among 14-year-olds.

But Marta Kostyuk received the greatest success in her so far rather short career in 2017. At her debut Australian Open among juniors, Marta became the champion. The most difficult test awaited Kostyuk in the final, where she was opposed by the first racket of the Australian Open and the winner of another Grand Slam tournament Roland Garros- Rebecca Masarova from Switzerland, who is three years older than Marta. Martha lost to this tennis player almost without a chance in the summer of 2016 in the final of the German Open. But this time she could not resist the Ukrainian - 7:5, 1:6, 6:4.

In Melbourne, Marta Kostyuk nearly became the youngest Australian Open winner in history. The 14-year-old Ukrainian was only five days older than Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who won that Grand Slam in 2006.

In addition to Kostyuk, only one Ukrainian won at the junior level in Australia in 2014 - Angelina Kalinina, who in 2014 won the doubles tournament in a duet with Russian Elizaveta Kulichkova.

However, our tennis players have won other junior Grand Slam tournaments. In 1991, Andrei Medvedev at 16 won Roland Garros, in 2004, 17-year-old Ekaterina Bondarenko won Wimbledon, and in 2010, 15-year-old Elina Svitolina won the title of winner of the French Open.

Success at the Australian Open was followed by triumphs at the US Open in doubles and the junior Final tournament, as well as the first trophy at the adult level - a tournament with prize fund 25 thousand dollars in the Hungarian city of Dunakeszi.

Girl's interests

Like every teenager, among Marta Kostyuk's hobbies is shopping. After winning the junior Australian Open, she even complained that during this time that she performed, she could not visit any of shopping centers in Melbourne.

Speech in the Rada

In March 2016, 13-year-old Marta Kostyuk spoke at parliamentary hearings in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Martha came to the walls of parliament on the initiative of the people's deputy from the Radical Party, the first world champion in swimming Denis Silantyev in the independent history of Ukraine.

In a three-minute speech, Kostyuk tried to explain to the people's representatives that all victories in Ukrainian sports are possible not because of, but in spite of, material realities. In her speech, she called on the deputies to pass laws and create conditions for entrepreneurs so that they can finance talented athletes in Ukraine.

“Unfortunately, the state is not doing enough to support not only tennis, but also other sports. I understand very well that today there is no money in the budget, there is a war in the Donbass and there is an economic crisis in the country, but I would like to appeal to all deputies and politicians : you are smart adults, can't you pass a law that will make it so that it would be profitable for a businessman to help sports? athlete or federation, then he will agree to this," the girl said from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada.

Martha knows what she's talking about. At the dawn of her career, she went to competitions solely for the money of one of her mother's former students, who agreed to finance the first international starts of a talented girl, not expecting that his investments would return. Actually, thanks to that person, Martha was able to compete for the first two years, and then gradually began to earn money herself. But this was not the kind of money that would allow them to function comfortably. After her daughter's victory at the junior Australian Open, Talina Beiko admitted that even a year before the situation looked critical.

Brilliant performance of 15-year-old Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk on Open Championship Australia has become the main sensation of the tournament so far, even though there are a lot of other surprises in the women's singles. All over the world attention is riveted to our young athlete and, of course, I cannot stay away either.

Let us briefly recall the components of this success. Martha's tale began in Australia a year ago, at the age of 14, when she won the junior Australian Open, unexpectedly defeating 17-year-old Swiss Masarova in the final. According to the established tradition, the winner among juniors for the next year is given a wild card in the qualification of adult competitions. Kostyuk took full advantage of the opportunity. Arina Rodionova and Daniela Segel were beaten in the first two rounds of qualification, and in both matches Marta managed to return to the game after losing the first set. In the game for entering the main draw in the same three sets, the much more dangerous Barbora Kreichikova was defeated.

The main tournament began for Kostyuk with a duel against the 25th seeded Chinese Shuai Peng. Few people expected the eminent rival, our eldest girl more than two times, to take out in one wicket. But only four given games, excellent tennis - and hello, world fame! Yes, of course, the health problems of the Chinese woman played a certain role, but she did not go to the match in a wheelchair! We waited for the game of the second round with restrained optimism, because the Australian Olivia Rogowska from the middle of the second hundred of the rating did not look like an impenetrable opponent. And even though the quality of tennis of both tennis players was not too high, but what did it matter if, after two sets, Kostyuk won and went as far as the third round! Here she had to play with one of the best tennis players on the planet, compatriot Elina Svitolina. Young Martha's previous five victories and her attacking style of play meant that some hotheads predicted her victory even in this match. In any case, the odds for Kostyuk's victory were steadily falling before the game. But the super sensation did not happen. Svitolina didn't do anything special on the court, pitching consistently and carefully picking up Martha's mistakes. 6:2, 6:2, and Elina for the first time in her career goes to the fourth round in Melbourne. Nevertheless, Kostyuk became the youngest participant in the third round at the Grand Slam tournaments in the last 20 years. What made this success possible?

Of course, the main reason is Martha's great talent. I try to follow her game for the last year as much as possible. After all, often junior tournaments remain without broadcasts. But what has already been seen is enough to form a definite opinion. Since everything in the world is relative, I propose to compare the current level of tennis of our young tennis player with what Elina Svitolina, the first racket of Ukraine, demonstrated in junior age. With one caveat: I began to seriously follow the game of Svitolina at her 17-18-year-old age, so I will compare the game of people who are not the same age. This comparison will be quite justified, since the places in the ranking of today's Marta and Elina are approximately the same six years ago.

So let's start with the submission. Svitolina's serve until about age twenty-one was one of the biggest problems in her game. Only 2-3 years ago, Elina began to serve the first one quite powerfully and directionally. The second serve, although gradually improving, remains rather weak, and the beating rivals take it right through with pleasure. Martha's first serve is already flying at a speed of 160-170 km / h and is directed quite sharply. Aces are a common occurrence for her. The second serve surprises me in general, because there are not so many tennis players in the adult round who serve the second under 150. Everything would be fine, but the percentage of hits is still a problem. Below 50% for the first serve, and a dozen and a half double faults per match are also the norm. However, those who have played tennis know that the serve is the most difficult technical element games. Therefore, it seems that the improvement in the quality of putting the ball into the game will come with age and constant training.

Now it is difficult to imagine that at a junior age Svitolina aspired to play attacking tennis. The backhand of seventeen-year-old Elina was more stable than the forehand. The crown was a blow to the left along the line, which, however, she did not always risk using. Svitolina's sharpness in backhand crosses only appeared last year in Toronto. The quality of the forehand was very dependent on her specific condition. What hit is Martha's trademark, I still don't understand. With her super-aggressive style of play, she is not afraid to attack from any position. And he can score with the help of any technique. True, and make mistakes too - in any situation. Svitolina, although she was not a model of stability, allowed much less blots. Another point: Elina has been good at using kicks with strong rotation since her junior days. Marta mainly performs flat shots. Slices, and especially half-hills, should still appear in her arsenal. They are very useful for playing on clay.

In the skill of the game since the summer, Kostyuk has an undeniable superiority even compared to today's Svitolina. Marta loves and knows how to go to the net, completing her attacks there. Elina needs to be lured there with a roll, and the consequences can be the most unpredictable.

Why do I climb into the wilds tennis subtleties? To prove the following thesis: the fifteen-year-old Kostyuk is not inferior in terms of the level of play to the seventeen-year-old Svitolina. Or maybe even slightly superior. Therefore, we, the fans, have reason to hope for the relatively soon appearance of another top tennis player in Ukraine, because Marta is a phenomenal talent. However, great success in tennis can be achieved only with a combination of the following three factors.

1. Actually talent. Without him, nowhere, everything is clear.

2. Diligence. On this second point, the dreams of becoming outstanding players of many great talents were dashed. Ask Eugenie Bouchard - she knows. And it's better not to ask Milevsky, otherwise you may not have time to escape.

3. Purposefulness, the importance of which is sometimes underestimated. Donkey, you know, works hard and hard. But still not a horse. You need to know what you are striving for, and go towards the goal, without turning off, step by step.

If on the first point the advantage of Kostyuk is beyond doubt, then on the other two Svitolina is one of the best in modern women's tennis. Whether Martha will be able to cope with the burden of her early fame, and continue to work hard on the quality of her game, time will tell. After all, she is still a child, and it was not in vain that at one time the Tour introduced restrictions on participation in adult tournaments for players under 18 years old (now fifteen-year-old players are allowed to play 10 adult tournaments a year). The life story sometimes mentioned in the comments of Jennifer Capriati confirms the correctness decision. A great responsibility falls on the shoulders of the parents of Marta Kostyuk. They need to support and guide their daughter, while not slipping into authoritarianism. Raising a child is hard, but raising a child prodigy in such a way that he does not turn into an ordinary middle-aged person is ten times more difficult.

Well, we, Ukrainian tennis fans, will continue to believe in our young star. Personally, I express the cautious hope that Marta will give me many more reasons to write articles in her honor with her acting. And I also hope that she will not read this material. She does not need a large number of praises yet.

15-year-old Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk is the main sensation of 2018. First, she became the youngest participant in the Australian Open adult tournament, and then she won 5 games in a row against strong and more experienced rivals.

Edition Without Taboo tells about a young athlete.

Marta Kostyuk was born in Kyiv in 2002 into a family of tennis players. Her mother Talina Beyko played professionally and was the strongest racket of the 80s and 90s in Ukraine. Her uncle Taras Beyko was the champion of the USSR in doubles and the champion of Ukraine in singles. It is not surprising that her mother and uncle Taras became her first coaches.

At first, all hopes relied on Martha's older sister, Maria, but she did not hide the fact that she was playing tennis only to enter a prestigious university in the United States and quit playing immediately after admission.

But the youngest sister of Marta - Zoryana strives to reach the heights of her sister, who is her role model in everything.

“My mother is a coach, she worked a lot when I was little. Therefore, I had super motivation - to do everything to spend more time with her. I tried to spend as much time as possible with her on the courts, that’s how it all started. I am a girl with character, so I started to play, "recalls Marta Kostyuk.

Marta Kostyuk won her first tennis championship at the age of 12 in 2016

Incredible talent and perspective became clear already at the age of 12, and in 2016 Marta Kostyuk won the unofficial Petit As children's world championship and made her debut at the adult level. Already in adolescence, she characterized her emotional style.

“You can call it “dominate, conquer, humiliate.” This is, of course, a joke, but really, if I play defense, I like to take control of the game and win. For as long as I can remember, I have always cried, broken rackets, but I never It doesn't interfere. For my game, it's even better - to shout, hit with a racket and wind myself up, "Marta admitted.

In 2017, the progress of Marta Kostyuk was noticed not only by specialists, but also by fans and the media. In January, she won the junior Australian Open, beating the legendary Rebecca Masarova of Switzerland in the final.

In May 2017 in Hungary, Martha won her first senior tournament. In September, Kostyuk won the doubles at the US Open. And the Ukrainian finished the season with a triumph at the Final tournament for girls under 18 in China.

Marta Kostyuk loves to win, but does not like it when she does not suffer from "star disease"

In addition, Marta Kostyuk became the youngest tennis player to win a Grand Slam match overall since 2014, when 15-year-old American Katherine Bellis achieved a similar success at the US Open.

They try to compare Martha with the legendary tennis player Martini Higgins.

"Martha won the main draw of the Australian Open at the age of 15 years and 6 months, Hingis in 1996 was 15 years and 4 months during the tournament in Melbourne," the media write.

As you know, 15-year-old Hingis in 1996 also overcame the first round of the Australian Open. After that, Hingis became the first racket of the world for 209 weeks, received 5 titles in Grand Slam tournaments, and she won over 100 tournaments to her credit.

Marta Kostyuk never forgets which country she plays for and that she is cheering for her in the stands

After the victory over the 27th racket of the world Peng Shuai from China, Martha's mother gave a short interview about her daughter.

“We were not very familiar with Peng Shuai. But there is Dima Bricek, the coach of Lesia Tsurenko - he told us how to play with her. And also our Croatian coach Luka Kutanich: Marta worked with him for three last months. He trained Chinese women and also told us a lot. So we had a lot of options for her. If one had not passed, they would have played the second, the third. And I see, Martha has used all the options. Therefore, I am very pleased with her game, I acted according to the situation, applied different strategies," Talina Beiko told Segodnya.

Marta Kostyuk herself admitted that she was afraid to return to Kyiv after high-profile victories.

Marta Kostyuk goes to training after another victory, and does not rest on her laurels

“I’m afraid to come to Kyiv after some big victories, because everything is so beautiful at once, everyone loves you so much, you don’t want to train. I try to immediately go to Cannes after victories, because in Europe, of course, everyone is happy, but literally one day and then everyone forgot, we train further, "Kostyuk said in an interview last year.
