Russian schoolchildren have won several gold medals at the completed International Olympiads in Physics and Mathematics. So, at the 48th International physical olympiad, held in Indonesia, the Russians took five gold medals for the first time in history. At the Mathematics Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro, Mikhail Ivanov from St. Petersburg won one gold, and the Russian team took 11th place.

Schoolchildren from 88 countries took part in the International Physics Olympiad. Russian students and their coaches have already been congratulated by the Minister of Education and Science of Russia Olga Vasilyeva.

Russian schoolchildren, whose knowledge in physics was awarded gold medals, shared with RT their impressions of the last Olympiad. Dmitry Plotnikov, a graduate of the Moscow School No. 1329, said that the competition was not without incidents. So, the experimental tour was postponed by a day, so the participants had to wait several hours.
“In anticipation, many slept right on the floor,” Plotnikov admitted.
The graduate also spoke about how the preparation for the intellectual competition took place. According to him, the fees at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology helped, where the participants "explained complex topics in simple language."
Nevertheless, the graduate believes that no matter how nice it is to get gold, the most important task on this moment for him is admission to a good university.
Another winner of the gold medal in physics, a student of the physics and mathematics boarding school from the Komi Republic, Kirill Parshukov, also shared with RT the details of the Olympiad, which consisted of two rounds: theoretical and experimental.
If the theory seemed simple to Kirill, then, in his words, "the experiment turned out to be difficult to complete in the allotted time." However, no difficulties prevented the student from winning a gold medal.
Parshukov also noted that when presenting the award, he felt "satisfaction with achieving the goal that he had been working towards for three years."
Supervisor Russian team, MIPT Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs and Pre-university Training Artyom Voronov told RT that, in comparison with school curriculum the problems of international olympiads are very voluminous - five hours are given to solve three problems.
“The guys arrived ten days before the start of the Olympiad, and we solved quite long and difficult problems with them in order to fill their hands and refresh their knowledge. This happened at MIPT, we have there special trainers, also former Olympiads,” said Voronov.
He admitted that the guys are very emotional about the Olympiad, but it is arranged in such a way that everything happens in a positive atmosphere.
“Everyone did a very good job. This is a joint victory, unique for Russia - there have never been five gold medals in physics in history, and we, of course, have been moving towards this victory for a long time, ”Voronov added.
Distinguished in Rio
On Saturday, July 22, the International Mathematical Olympiad, which was held in Rio de Janeiro, ended with a solemn ceremony. On it, Russian schoolchildren took 11th place in the team standings.
The best result among Russians was shown by Mikhail Ivanov from St. Petersburg. In terms of total points, he was awarded a gold medal and took 14th place in the individual standings. In a conversation with RT, the student said that preparations for the competition took place in Sochi, and also shared his opinion about the Olympics in Rio itself.

But I am glad that I received a gold medal, this is a great merit of our leaders - teachers who accompanied us to the Olympiad and explained to the English-speaking members of the jury what we wrote in our works, ”said Ivanov.

Recall that a week ago, Russian schoolchildren also won two gold and two silver medals at the International Chemistry Olympiad, held in Thailand. Then representatives of 76 countries took part in the competition, and the Moscow schoolboy Alexander Zhigalin became the absolute winner of the Olympiad.
Ruslan Kotlyarov from Kazan won another gold, with whom RT also managed to talk. He admitted that there was a very intensive preparation before the International Olympiad, although in fact the assignments turned out to be relatively easy.
“In total, we studied chemistry for almost a month, eight hours a day, seven days a week.<...>The Olympics were, in general, easy and quite doable. There were many tasks, but in general, strong participants could sit for another hour to check the answers, ”said Kotlyarov.
He added that despite the concentration on the competition, the guys managed to make many new acquaintances, communicate and get acquainted with the culture of Thailand. Schoolchildren were able to see the beauty of Bangkok and its environs, including the ruins of the ancient capital of Siam.
“Since all the equipment was taken away from us - team leaders translate tasks personally, and leaks cannot be allowed - we had a lot of time to communicate. Naturally, we made a bunch of new friends. It was extremely interesting with them, and I will miss it, ”said Kotlyarov.

Dozens of journalists meet medal winners of the International Physics Olympiad at the airport. But in front of the cameras there are not lyricists, but physicists: they feel much more confident in the laboratory than during communication with the press.
“It’s not clear whether you are smart or just learned a lot,” says Dmitry Plotnikov, gold medalist of the International Physics Olympiad for schoolchildren.
“In fact, it was a feeling of satisfaction, because all the work that was invested was not in vain,” said Kirill Parshukov, gold medalist of the International Physics Olympiad for schoolchildren.
This Olympiad, the 48th in a row, was held in Indonesia. Russian schoolchildren have won before, but this is the first time such a result has been shown.
“This is a record for Russia. Russia used to get four gold medals and one silver, three gold medals and one silver. This year we got the absolute maximum,” says team leader Artem Voronov.

Indonesian Yogyakarta hosted the strongest young physicists from 88 countries. To win, you need to have not only exceptional knowledge of physics, but also take into account the experience of previous Olympiads.
“It is very important to know what has happened before, because sometimes tasks are repeated or not directly repeated, but some motives are repeated, so this opportunity should not be missed,” says Ivan Gushchin.
For almost a month, Dmitry Plotnikov, a graduate of one of the Moscow schools, was not at home. Parents proudly show awards - their son has been receiving since elementary school. They remember: he spent all his pocket money not on entertainment, but on equipment for experiments.
“He probably managed to get the gold because he was interested. He has chosen a direction for the last five years and is engaged in it. I don’t have enough, for example, to play football with him, but he spends time there, which means that everything else is less important for him, ”said Vladimir Plotnikov.
Gifted children become guests of the educational center "Sirius". Programs have been developed for children in all types of sciences, a science park and a cultural center are operating. In December 2015, Sirius hosted the Experimental Physics Olympiad, Dmitry Plotnikov won there too.

We talked to the guys and learned the details about their victory and plans for the future.
Last week, the 48th International Physics Olympiad IPhO 2017 was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. More than 400 students from 88 countries took part in it. About half of the young physicists received medals, and the highest award, a gold medal, was awarded to 60 schoolchildren.
Russia was represented at the Olympiad by four eleventh graders and one tenth grader from different parts of the country: Dmitry Plotnikov from Moscow school number 1329, Stanislav Krymsky from the academic lyceum "Physico-technical school" of St. Petersburg, Vasily Yugov from school number 146 in Perm, Kirill Parshukov from the Physics and Mathematics Lyceum-boarding school of the Komi Republic and Sergey Vlasenko from school number 8 in Voronezh. The team was trained at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, teachers, graduate students and students of the Physicotechnical Institute worked with schoolchildren.

Tell us about your passion for physics. How did you start, how did you manage to reach such a high level?
Sergey Vlasenko: My interest in physics and mathematics probably comes from my grandfather - he was an engineer. I started seriously studying physics in the 9th grade, when I went to Vseros. And then it kind of went on.
Kirill Parshukov: In the summer after the 8th grade, I went to the Kirov LMSh, where I got interested in the Olympiad physics. I set myself the goal of going to Vseros at 9, became a prize-winner. In the 10th grade, he was included in the number of candidates for the national team.
Dmitry Plotnikov: A physics teacher from lyceum 1524 motivated me, I studied there from the 6th to the beginning of the 9th grade.
Stanislav Krymsky: When I was studying at primary school I was interested in reading physics textbooks. Therefore, by the 6th grade, I was already ready to participate in the city Olympiad in this subject. Tasks for grade 7 were simple, but for grade 8 and above they already caused difficulties, I had to do a lot. Gradually I learned the theory, but I had to learn how to solve problems by applying it. I took the archive of the Olympiad for a certain class, solved problems for all the years. It has become a habit, like exercise. In 2014, I went to All-Russian, I was then in the 7th grade. Became a winner. It was then that Valery Pavlovich Slobodyanin called me to Dolgoprudny to prepare for the IJSO. At the training camp, I realized that I can do a lot. I believed in myself. It motivated. In addition to physics, it was necessary to go deep into chemistry and biology, because at IJSO assignments are given in all three subjects. In the end, I went to the team and in Argentina I received my first gold medal of the international, albeit a junior one. It was then that my teammates explained to me that only participation in the “big international” - IPHO, can be considered a real achievement. I had to train for three more years, and everything worked out. The experience of participating in IJSO helped a lot. I understood what it means to "bot".
Vasily Yugov: By the seventh grade, I was already an experienced Olympiad and I was good at mathematics. After the sixth grade, I moved to the Physics and Mathematics School of 146 in Perm, where a wonderful physics teacher, Sergei Evgenievich Polyansky, works. With an experienced eye, he saw something in me and took up my preparation with all his strength. Two trips to the Kirov LMS also helped. As a result, in the eighth grade I was already a winner All-Russian Olympiad in physics for the ninth grade. The secret of success is simple. Daily work, concentration, an excellent mentor and, probably, natural data.
Have you taken part in olympiads in other subjects?
Sergey Vlasenko: I didn't have particularly big victories in other subjects. I participated in final stage Vseros in mathematics in grade 11, was the winner of the region; became the winner of "Phystech". And in the 9th grade he was the winner of the region in ecology and the winner in chemistry. He also participated in Olympiads in informatics at the regional level.
Kirill Parshukov: I was interested in the Olympiad in mathematics, I didn’t get further than prize-winning in the region.
Dmitry Plotnikov: In other subjects, not so much.
Stanislav Krymsky: Three times I received a diploma of the winner at the All-Russian Mathematics. Unfortunately, it is impossible to fight for a place in the international team in two subjects at the same time. It's offensive. I really envy Hermione Granger with her time-turner. I just need it! In the 7th grade, I also went to all-Russian astronomy, I even became a prize-winner. But astronomy had to be abandoned, as well as computer science. You can achieve high results by doing only one subject. Can't be scattered.
Vasily Yugov: I am the winner of the finals of the All-Russian Olympiad for schoolchildren in mathematics and informatics.
How was the training before IPHO?
Sergey Vlasenko: At first, about 30 people from Vseros of the 10th grade were selected. Then there were several training and selection camps and All-Russian 11th grade, after which 7 people remained, who then went to the Asian Physics Olympiad, APhO. According to the results of APhO and the previous rating, 5 people (us) were chosen who participated in IPhO. Just before the Olympics, there were another training camp.
The fees include lectures, seminars, training and qualifying theoretical and experimental tours of the international type.
Kirill Parshukov: During the year, training camps were held, we were trained and selected for them.
Dmitry Plotnikov: Personally, I did not prepare, I tried to relax psychologically, because most of the guys merge on stupid mistakes.
Stanislav Krymsky: Intensely. The team arrived in Dolgoprudny on 3 July. Installation fees began on July 4th. 10 days of classes is like a good change in summer school. This is just the time when you have time to get into the rhythm of classes, and fatigue has not yet had time to manifest itself. There were many experiments and interesting lectures with a reserve for the future.
Vasily Yugov: Trainings were held at home (self-training) and in Dolgoprudny, at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, where the national team is preparing.

At the 48th IPhO International Physics Olympiad in Indonesia, all five Russian students from the national team won a gold medal. This is the best result of the country in the history of participation in the Olympiad. In 2016, the Russian team won four gold medals.

The Russian school mathematics team also performed well at the International Mathematics Olympiad, winning six medals. The Olympics, held in Rio de Janeiro, ended on July 23.
