For tennis fans, 14-year-old Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk has turned from a well-known athlete only in narrow circles into one of the most promising juniors in the world in just a week. The victory at the Australian Open - 2017 lit the star of Kostyuk, but the triumph in Melbourne did not happen by chance for the Ukrainian, she went to this victory for almost 10 years.

The mother of the athlete Talina Kostyuk, who trains her daughter, told KP in Ukraine about the tennis path of a talented girl.

"Fulfilled the standard of the master of sports in acrobatics"

- Talina, congratulations on your victory! Have you already celebrated?

We will be celebrating already in Kyiv, it doesn’t work here, because on the day of victory everything was very chaotic. The next day, Marta went to a restaurant with our Ukrainian diaspora, and I watched the final between Federer and Nadal. But at home we will already gather friends and congratulate Martha on her victory. Will there be a cake? Martha doesn't like sweets at all. On the contrary, she is a meat lover, she also eats fruits and vegetables.

- Who brought Marta to tennis?

When Marta was five years old, she came to me for training, saw that it was good with her mother, she didn’t need to sit with a nanny at home or in a kindergarten, and she wanted to stay. Then we decided to create a group for children, and she began to train. Martha worked out with everyone, training was three times a week, and she also did acrobatics every day in parallel. In acrobatics, by the way, she fulfilled the standard of a master of sports, but she was not given the title, she was not yet 11 years old, and the title is given from this age. Therefore, she is a candidate for master of sports in acrobatics.

- So why all the same tennis? When did you realize that this sport is her profession?

In tennis, Marta was originally very capable, the best in the group. After the first training session with her, I realized that she feels the ball, she has the power of impact. After all, I started coaching in 1996, and Martha came to tennis in 2007, I already had enough experience to feel that this was a talent.

The only problem was that she didn't know how to lose. She had to win always, against everyone and everywhere. And it was very difficult when, at her first tournament at the age of 6, Marta played with older girls. She was very small, short, it was difficult for her, she lost and was very nervous. After that, we even took a break and did not play in tournaments.

"Bubka Jr. introduced Lubichich"

- How does Marta manage to combine school and tennis?

Marta studies at the School of External Students in the Goloseevsky district of Kyiv. He just comes and takes tests or tests, but now it’s getting less and less time to study. Although initially she was very capable and active in school. Martha did not study in the third grade, she was immediately transferred to the fourth. But then there were more and more trainings, Marta finished her studies at school until the 8th grade inclusive, and then from the 9th grade she began to study externally, because she had to train twice a day.

- What difficulties did you encounter at the beginning of the journey? Did you have support, sponsors? After all, tennis is quite an expensive sport.

We did not have any particular difficulties, because I worked as a coach, I knew all the directors sports complexes and they gave me the courts for free.

But not without sponsorship. From 10 to 12 years old, Marta and I traveled to very good tournaments in Europe thanks to this help.

Were in the USA, where Marta won two Orange Ball tournaments among juniors under 14 years old. It was a good start. Then we had a tournament in France, which is considered the unofficial world championship for tennis players under 14 years old. His Marta won both singles and doubles.

At the beginning of last year, we had a very difficult period, when it seemed that we all won, but we had no sponsors and no money. I could no longer train, because I worked closely with Marta, all my groups disbanded, and it was very difficult. And then the president of FTU Sergey Lagur helped us. We were able to ride all spring good tournaments in Europe.

- Tell us, how did you start working with the Croatian coach and manager Ivan Ljubičić?

At one of the tournaments in Europe, we were seen by Sergey Bubka Jr., who has already become a manager. He introduced us to Ivan Lyubichich, and we began to work together. Now trips are not very expensive for us, because at the tournaments where we go, they often pay for accommodation for both the player and the coach. And we only spend money on travel.

Ljubicic helped us a lot in terms of psychology. Marta plays well, but is very nervous, and Ljubičić helps her calm down, get in the right mood, points her to her strengths, that helps a lot.

"We try to be in Kyiv as little as possible"

- How often do you go home?

To be honest, we try to visit Kyiv as rarely as possible. Here everyone tells her that she is a superstar, and this does not contribute to her development. In addition, there is no stable training process in Kyiv.

In the winter we were in America, then we came to Kyiv for three weeks, I got sick, and Marta trained with three different coaches. And then she flew to Cannes for a week to play outside. We first came to Cannes last year, when we signed a contract with Lubicic, and since mid-July we have been there for about six weeks. There are very good conditions.

- What are your plans for this season?

After the Australian Open, we want to relax, improve our health. Martha needs to heal her shoulder and knees, take a break from tennis for a while. And then we plan to play all junior Grand Slams and Category A tournaments.

TO THE POINT

"Goes to church every Sunday"

- What does Marta like to do besides tennis?

In an interview, she tells everyone that she loves shopping, well, since she has such a desire and time for it, then, of course, I allow her. She also likes to do manicures and hairstyles for herself, which is good for a girl. It is very important that she be liberated, remain herself.

She has also been going to the Catholic Church every Sunday since she was four years old. She has the right outlook on life. It is easy for me to talk with her, to find common ground.

She became the youngest Ukrainian tennis player to win Grand Slam tournaments.

Plays tennis from the cradle

Marta was born into a tennis family. Her mother Talina Beiko and uncle Taras Beiko are former professional tennis players who even played for the Ukrainian national team in international cup matches.

Taras headed the ITF Seniors world ranking a couple of years ago, and her mother began to train children and, as Marta herself says, because of this, she started playing tennis almost from the cradle. Marta trained at the Kiev tennis club "Antey", not far from which her family lives. In addition to her mother, who accompanies Marta at all tournaments, the well-known coach Oleg Krivosheev played a big role in the development of the young tennis player.

Won all the most prestigious junior tournaments in a row

At the end of 2015, Marta Kostyuk went to the USA for a series of prestigious junior tournaments Eddie Herr International And Junior Orange Bowl. Then 13-year-old Marta was not the favorite of the tournament, and in general only people very close to tennis heard about her in Ukraine.

In America, Marta won 13 matches in a row and took both top prizes in the under 14 category with her to Kyiv, making a decent noise with her game. And I must say Martha's game is very bright. She tries to dictate the conditions on the court herself, attacks at the first opportunity and does not hesitate to go to the net, where she looks very dignified.

Two months after the American success, Kostyuk scores a championship double on the biggest European tournament- Les Petits As, which takes place in Tarbes, France, having won both titles in solitary And doubles ranks.

After the victory in France, March topped the European ranking Tennis Europe at the age of 14 and began to focus on junior ITF tournaments in the older age category.

Spoke in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine

By invitation famous sportsman and Deputy Denis Silantiev Marta Kostyuk spoke at a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, where in her emotional speech she told the parliamentary and sports elite what is necessary to save sports in Ukraine.

In her speech, she called on the deputies to pass laws and create conditions for entrepreneurs so that they can finance talented athletes in Ukraine.

Won all team titles in the Ukrainian national team

Last year, Marta Kostyuk won all major team tournaments as part of the Ukrainian U14 team. At first, our girls under the guidance of Oleg Krivosheev took European Winter Cup in the Czech Republic, then won in Italy on European Summer Cup together with captain Maria Korytseva and, finally, became world champions, having beaten the US team in the final already under the supervision of Martha's mother Talina Kostyuk.

All these tournaments were played by Ukrainians in one line-up: Marta and two Dashas - Snigur and Lopatetska. This "Dream Team" European tennis federation Tennis Europe at the end of last season awarded the title"Team of the Year"

Fulfilled the dream of meeting Federer

Last year, Marta began working with Croatian ex-tennis player Ivan Ljubicic, who coaches Roger Federer. Kostyuk often said that dreaming of meeting with the legendary Swiss and, thanks to Ivan, hopes to realize his dream.

In Melbourne, Martha finally managed to meet Roger. Federer congratulated Marta on her victory and did not miss the opportunity to take a picture with the young champion of the Australian Open.

Objective for 2017: enter the Top 500 professional rating

"Last season there were many ups and downs, they are clearly expressed if you look at my results. But you need to understand that you can’t do without it. Of course, I’m happy with how I spent the year. My goal was to enter the Top 100 among I'm 18 years old and now I'm in the Top 20. My next goal is to be in the WTA Top 500 by the end of this year.", - this is how Marta defined her tasks in interview to our portal before starting in Australia.

After brilliant victory in Melbourne, Martha will enter the top ten juniors in the world. At the post-match press conference, Kostyuk said that from junior tournaments she plans to play only in the Grand Slam series: Roland Garros, possibly Wimbledon, and the US Open.

But Martha's main expectations for the season are: "Not afraid to play and show my game. I'm not afraid to lose. I know that if I lose in the first or second round, there will be a lot of condemnation. I know that a lot is expected of me, but I will try not to think about the result, but concentrate on development of my playing qualities. The support of Ukrainian fans inspires me a lot!".

On January 17, 15-year-old tennis player from Ukraine Marta Kostyuk defeated Australian Olivia Rogovskaya in the second round of the Australian Open and advanced to the 1/16 finals. The Ukrainian broke two records at once: she became the youngest participant in the third round of the Australian Open since 1996, and also the youngest participant in the third round of the Grand Slam tournament since 1997.

“She just burned on the court. Martha will be a great player. I didn’t feel that she was only 15 years old. She felt free on the court and, as I said, she will grow into a very dangerous tennis player,” Olivia Rogowska said in a post-match interview at the Margaret Court Arena.

"I'm happy, just happy. Today on the court I felt very bad, it was hot, but I managed to get through it. It seems that every year I set some kind of record or repeat them, so I'm fine with this," noted Ukrainian.

Early career and first victories

Martha was born in 2002 in sports family: her father is a former basketball player and technical director of junior tennis tournament"Antey Cup" Oleg Kostyuk, mother - Talina Kostyuk (maiden name Beiko) - a former professional tennis player. Marta started playing tennis at the age of five, her first coach was her uncle Taras Beiko, the USSR tennis champion in doubles and the champion of Ukraine in singles (now Marta is coached by Ivan Ljubicic, a former Croatian tennis player, one of whose wards is also Roger Federer).

As a child, Martha combined tennis with acrobatics: at the age of 11 she became a master of sports in this discipline. Celebrating the victory at one of the ITF tournaments, she showed her acrobatic skills.

Kostyuk's first success was the victory at the Petits As tournament in 2016, which is called the unofficial world championship among tennis players aged 12-14. After that, the tennis player was invited to the Verkhovna Rada for parliamentary hearings "on the development of physical culture and sports in the context of decentralization." 13-year-old Kostyuk from the podium called on the deputies "to adopt a law that will make it profitable for businessmen to help sports."

In May 2017, she became the youngest Ukrainian to win a professional tournament in singles senior: Kostyuk won the ITF competition in Hungary without losing a set in the entire tournament.

In July 2017, Kostyuk won gold medal at the European Junior Championships in doubles and silver in singles. In September, she won another Grand Slam junior tournament - the US Open in doubles, where she was partnered by Serbian Olga Danilovic. In October, the Ukrainian won the final junior tournament of the year ITF Junior Masters in China.

“My mom and I discussed this issue today, we laughed a little and decided to call my style “dominate, conquer, humiliate.” It’s just a joke, but basically, even if I play defense, I try to transfer the game under my control and then to win," told Suit for journalists.

"I don't want to take tennis too close"

Prior to the start of the Australian Open, Kostyuk earned about $6.7 thousand in prize money in her career. The current performance in Melbourne has already provided her with prize money of at least $ 113.5 thousand (excluding taxes). If before the start of the Australian Open she was ranked 521st in the WTA ranking, then after the end of the tournament Kostyuk is guaranteed to get into the top 250.

However, despite the serious progress in her career, the Ukrainian does not consider tennis the main occupation in her life.

"I've heard a lot of players (maybe not top level) say 'tennis is everything to me, tennis is my life'. I don't want to take it that way because if I lose or something happens it will ruin my life. When I retire I want to be good at other things besides tennis. I know a lot of players who retired and then came back because they had nothing to do outside of tennis. I don't want to be that person that's why I don't take tennis so closely," Kostyuk said in an interview with WTA Insider.

Now Kostyuk is studying in the 11th grade. Kiev school externs. In the comment "Today" she said that she did not attend school, but studied with a tutor and took two exams for each subject. test papers in year. Among her favorite subjects she named geometry, English language and history.

Meeting with Svitolina

In the next round of the Australian Open, Kostyuk will meet with Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who currently ranks fourth in the WTA world rankings. The match will begin on the night of January 19, at 2.00 am Kyiv time. Bookmakers consider Svitolina the undisputed favorite: William Hill accepts bets on her victory with a coefficient of 1.05, and on Kostyuk's success - with a coefficient of 10.00.

Upon learning the name of her next opponent, Svitolina admitted that she had never heard of Kostyuk before the start of this tournament. "It will be very interesting and I hope I will be ready for this match. It's not every day that I play with someone from my country. It will be especially interesting for Ukrainian fans to watch this, I think. I didn’t know about her before, I looked a little at her game in the first round. You know, she has nothing to lose, so she goes all in - a little bit like a headless chicken.", - quotes the words of Svitolina official website of the Australian Open.

"I'll just enjoy playing on the big court again. I'll try to show my best tennis", Kostyuk promised.

"The Future of Tennis"

Kostyuk's performance at the Australian Open attracted the attention of dozens of world media to her.

Teen sensation Marta Kostiuk has been hailed as the future of tennis after becoming the youngest Australian Open second-round winner since Martina Hingis in 1996.

"She's not old enough to drive a car in most countries, let alone drink alcohol or vote. But the calm and confident teenager was impressive in a victory match with Olivia Rogowska and now it seems the world is at her feet," writes New Zealand edition of Newshub.

The brilliant performance of the 15-year-old Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk at the Australian Open has so far become the main sensation of the tournament, even though there are a lot of other surprises in the women's singles. All over the world attention is riveted to our young athlete and, of course, I cannot stay away either.

Let us briefly recall the components of this success. Martha's fairy tale began in Australia a year ago, at the age of 14, when she won the junior Australian Open, unexpectedly defeating 17-year-old Swiss Masarova in the final. According to the established tradition, the winner among juniors for the next year is given a wild card in the qualification of adult competitions. Kostyuk took full advantage of the opportunity. Arina Rodionova and Daniela Segel were beaten in the first two rounds of qualification, and in both matches Marta managed to return to the game after losing the first set. In the game for entering the main draw in the same three sets, the much more dangerous Barbora Kreichikova was defeated.

The main tournament began for Kostyuk with a duel against the 25th seeded Chinese Shuai Peng. Few people expected the removal of the eminent rival, our eldest girl more than twice, in one wicket. But only four given games, excellent tennis - and hello, world fame! Yes, of course, the health problems of the Chinese woman played a certain role, but she didn’t go to the match in a wheelchair! We waited for the game of the second round with restrained optimism, because the Australian Olivia Rogowska from the middle of the second hundred of the rating did not look like an impenetrable opponent. And even if the quality of tennis of both tennis players was not too high, but what did it matter if, following the results of two sets, Kostyuk won and went all the way to the third round! Here she had to play with one of the best tennis players on the planet, compatriot Elina Svitolina. Young Martha's previous five victories and her attacking style of play meant that some hotheads predicted her victory even in this match. In any case, the odds for Kostyuk's victory were steadily falling before the game. But the super sensation did not happen. Svitolina didn't do anything special on the court, pitching consistently and carefully picking up Marta's mistakes. 6:2, 6:2, and Elina for the first time in her career goes to the fourth round in Melbourne. Nevertheless, Kostyuk became the youngest participant in the third round at the Grand Slam tournaments in the last 20 years. What made this success possible?

Of course, the main reason is Martha's great talent. I try to follow her game for the last year as much as possible. After all, often junior tournaments remain without broadcasts. But what has already been seen is enough to form a definite opinion. Since everything in the world is relative, I propose to compare the current level of tennis of our young tennis player with what Elina Svitolina, the first racket of Ukraine, demonstrated in junior age. With one caveat: I began to seriously follow the game of Svitolina at her 17-18-year-old age, so I will compare the game of people who are not the same age. This comparison will be quite justified, since the places in the ranking of today's Marta and Elina are approximately the same six years ago.

So let's start with the submission. Svitolina's serve until about age twenty-one was one of the biggest problems in her game. Only 2-3 years ago, Elina began to serve the first one quite powerfully and directionally. The second serve, although gradually improving, remains rather weak, and the beating rivals take it right through with pleasure. Martha's first serve is already flying at a speed of 160-170 km / h and is directed quite sharply. Aces are a common occurrence for her. The second serve surprises me in general, because there are not so many tennis players in the adult round who serve the second under 150. Everything would be fine, but the percentage of hits is still a problem. Below 50% for the first serve, and a dozen and a half double faults per match are also the norm. However, those who have played tennis know that the serve is the most difficult technical element of the game. Therefore, it seems that the improvement in the quality of putting the ball into the game will come with age and constant training.

Now it is difficult to imagine that at a junior age Svitolina aspired to play attacking tennis. The backhand of seventeen-year-old Elina was more stable than the forehand. The crown was a blow to the left along the line, which, however, she did not always risk using. Svitolina's sharpness in backhand crosses only appeared last year in Toronto. The quality of the forehand was very dependent on her specific condition. What hit is Martha's trademark, I still don't understand. With her super-aggressive style of play, she is not afraid to attack from any position. And he can score with the help of anyone technical reception. True, and make mistakes too - in any situation. Svitolina, although she was not a model of stability, allowed much less blots. Another point: Elina has been good at using kicks with strong rotation since her junior days. Marta mainly performs flat shots. Slices, and especially half-hills, should still appear in her arsenal. They are very useful for playing on clay.

In the skill of the game since the summer, Kostyuk has an undeniable superiority even compared to today's Svitolina. Marta loves and knows how to go to the net, completing her attacks there. Elina needs to be lured there with a roll, and the consequences can be the most unpredictable.

Why do I climb into the wilds tennis subtleties? To prove the following thesis: the fifteen-year-old Kostyuk is not inferior in terms of the level of play to the seventeen-year-old Svitolina. Or maybe even slightly superior. Therefore, we, the fans, have reason to hope for the relatively soon appearance of another top tennis player in Ukraine, because Marta is a phenomenal talent. However, great success in tennis can only be achieved by a combination of the following three factors.

1. Actually talent. Without him, nowhere, everything is clear.

2. Diligence. On this second point, the dreams of becoming outstanding players of many great talents were shattered. Ask Eugenie Bouchard - she knows. And it's better not to ask Milevsky, otherwise you may not have time to escape.

3. Purposefulness, the importance of which is sometimes underestimated. Donkey, you know, works hard and hard. But still not a horse. You need to know what you are striving for, and go towards the goal, without turning off, step by step.

If on the first point the advantage of Kostyuk is beyond doubt, then on the other two Svitolina is one of the best in modern women's tennis. Whether Martha will be able to cope with the burden of her early fame, and continue to work hard on the quality of her game, time will tell. After all, she is still a child, and it was not in vain that at one time the Tour introduced restrictions on participation in adult tournaments for players under 18 years old (now fifteen-year-old players are allowed to play 10 adult tournaments a year). The life story sometimes mentioned in the comments of Jennifer Capriati confirms the correctness decision. A great responsibility falls on the shoulders of the parents of Marta Kostyuk. They need to support and guide their daughter, while not slipping into authoritarianism. Raising a child is hard, but raising a child prodigy in such a way that he does not turn into an ordinary middle-aged person is ten times more difficult.

Well, we, Ukrainian tennis fans, will continue to believe in our young star. Personally, I express the cautious hope that Marta will give me many more reasons to write articles in her honor with her acting. And I also hope that she will not read this material. She does not need a large number of praises so far.
