By the way, earlier Rio de Janeiro applied for hosting the 1936, 1940, 2004 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games, but never got into the number of cities participating in the final vote.

Symbolism

The Brazilian media suspected the creators of the 2016 Olympics logo of plagiarism. According to journalists, they found significant similarities with the logo of the American charitable foundation Telluride Foundation, which operates in Telluride, Colorado.

Both logos feature stylized figures of people dancing hand in hand. However, there are three figures on the logo of the Olympiad, and four figures on the logo of the fund, and their general silhouette resembles a heart.

The designers deny all accusations. The company behind the logo claims they have never seen the Telluride Foundation sign. According to the head of the company, before presenting their work to the public, they conducted extensive research to make it unique.

On July 3, 2015, the organizing committee of the Games presented the design Olympic torch. Its surface is covered with small triangles, which symbolize the main Olympic values - perfection, friendship and mutual respect. Multicolored wavy lines represent the efforts of the athletes. These lines are not initially visible, but are revealed at the moment the torch is lit. This process was called the "kiss of torches".

The colors of the lines symbolize the sea, mountains, sky and sun, as well as the colors of the flag of Brazil. The torch is made from recycled aluminum and gum and has a satin finish. It weighs from 1 kg to 1.5 kg, and is 63.5 cm high when closed and 69 cm open.

Talismans

In November 2014, the organizing committee of Rio 2016 presented two mascots for the future Games - the animal Vinicius and the plant Tom. They were named so as a result of a vote organized by the inhabitants of Brazil, in honor of two great Brazilian composers.

Rio Olympics mascots - Vinicius and Tom

Vinicius was born in an "explosion of joy" on the day of the announcement of Rio de Janeiro Olympic capital October 2, 2009 But he himself suggests not counting his exact number of years. Vinicios is a mixture of all known Brazilian animals. It has very flexible arms and legs, runs fast, jumps high and can imitate the speech of many species of fauna. Vinicius lives in Tijuca, the city's largest forest area, with a wonderful view of Rio.

Tom is a Paralympic mascot, a magical creature that united all the plants of the Brazilian forests. Tom was also born out of the “explosion of joy” that swept through Brazil after the announcement of the capital of the 2016 Summer Games. Tom loves Brazilian samba very much, reads books and, of course, knows a lot about the nature of his country. He prefers to rest in a lily flower in the waters of the lake. Its mission is to help find creativity and determination in yourself. And, of course, have fun.

Kinds of sports

It was decided to include competitions in rugby-7 (a simplified version of rugby) and golf in the program of the XXXI Summer Olympic Games.

Both of these species were once represented in the Olympic program.

Golfers on summer games competed in just two Olympics - and years. Then golf was removed from the list of Olympic sports.

The rugby tournament was first played in and has since been included in three subsequent Olympics. In the same Paris, but already, rugby said goodbye to the Olympic Games for a long time.

The Winter Youth Olympic Games 2016, the official name of which is the Second Winter Youth Olympic Games, will be held from February 12 to 21 in the city of Lillehammer (Norway). They are held once every four years, like all the Olympics.

The Norwegian city of Lillehammer, which in 2016 will host young athletes, was the only one to officially apply to host the II Winter Youth Olympic Games. It is a city-commune located in the county of Oppland.

More than 1,000 participants aged 15 to 18 will come to the Youth Olympic Games. They will play 70 sets of awards in various types sports. The games will be played at sports facilities built for Winter Olympics 1994, which took place in Norway. Of course, all objects will be restored and improved.

Program of the Youth Olympic Games 2016

The program of the II Winter Youth Olympic Games will be in many ways a repetition of the "adult" program. Among the youth there will be competitions in the following disciplines: biathlon, bobsleigh, skeleton, curling, hockey, luge, figure skating, short track, speed skating, skiing, freestyle, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined and ski jumping.

Also, for the first time, the sports program of the II Winter Youth Games will include:

  • races on mono-bobs (single beans, bobsleigh) among boys and girls;
  • mixed relay in biathlon, where each country will be represented by 1 girl and 1 boy;
  • competitions in slope-style (freestyle);
  • snowboard cross competitions (snowboard).

There is one more innovation: team competitions in combined sports will be held in Norway: in cross-country skiing, in ski jumping and in Nordic combined, where each country will be represented by 2 skiers (a boy and a girl), 2 jumpers (a boy and a girl) and 1 biathlete. Second team competition- a combination of performances of skiers and snowboarders: 2 skiers (boy and girl) and 2 snowboarders (boy and girl) from each country.

Lillehammer (Norway) - host city of the Youth Olympics

An interesting innovation has been introduced in hockey competitions - medals will be played both among teams and in individual skills: accuracy and power of the throw, speed of skating, the art of dribbling and other elements of hockey. Both boys and girls will take part in the competition. Also, a distinctive feature of the youth games is that sports competitions are necessarily held in combination with cultural and educational programs.

It is not without reason that the International Olympic Committee pays great attention to the educational level of athletes. At the Games in 2016, young athletes will get acquainted with the culture of the countries taking part in the Olympic Games, communicate with famous masters of sports and, of course, make new friends from other countries.

Recall that during the First Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck (2012), three prize-winning places in the team event were taken by teams: 1st place - Germany (8 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze), 2nd place - China (4 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze), 3rd place - host country Austria (6 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze). The Russian team took fifth place in the team championship and brought home 5 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals.

Day 5
February 16, 2016.

13 sets of awards were played.

On the fifth day of the Olympics, the Russians won 7 medals (two gold, four silver and one bronze). Gold medals are again on the skaters' account - Anastasia Shpileva / Grigory Smirnov won in dancing, Polina Tsurskaya - in single skating. Two more medals were won by members of the national team figure skating: silver medal for Maria Sotskova, bronze medal for Anastasia Skoptsova / Kirill Alyoshin. Cross-country skiing, sprinting classic style second place was won by Yuliya Petrova, silver in the luge relay was brought by Evgeny Petrov, Olesya Mikhailenko, Vsevolod Kashkin / Konstantin Korshunov, and Sofya Tikhonova jumped to the silver medal on the springboard.

AT team standings The Russian national team climbed from 11th place to fourth with three gold, five silver and six bronze medals. The South Koreans are in the lead (7-2-2), the second - the Americans (6-4-0), the third - the Germans (4-4-4), the fifth - the Swiss (3-3-2), the sixth - the Norwegians (2-5 -3). In terms of the total number of awards, the first are Russians (14), the second are Germans (12), and the third are South Koreans (11).

Athletes commented on their performance

Olesya Mikhailenko: “After the failure in personal tournament Today I really wanted to redeem myself. I changed the sled and performed, I think, with dignity. She did everything that depended on me. And thanks guys! Together we won this medal. Too bad it's not gold.

Evgeny Petrov: “I can say this about myself: I could have driven better. On the other hand, I managed to accurately pass the 15th and 16th bends, where I made mistakes the day before. Correspondence struggle with the Germans turned out to be tense. All decided the nuances.

Vsevolod Kashkin: “For me, this youth Olympics was successful. I am satisfied with the bronze in the tournament of twos, and today's silver. Our team has shown the maximum. I hope we will continue to improve, and soon you will see us already at the adult Games.”

Konstantin Korshunov: “And I have no reason to be dissatisfied. We drove at the level of our best results - in particular, Seva and I improved the starting acceleration. Silver medal is not bad. Although, of course, you always dream of more. The Germans fought on equal terms. Just a little bit was not enough to win.”

But, in general, we skated without serious blots. It is especially pleasant, that we were ahead of the closest pursuers by several points. We want to thank everyone who worked with us, and say hello to our entire school. We are increasingly visited by thoughts about the adult Games, and, I hope, someday we will definitely perform at them! ".

“Before the free program, we didn’t feel much excitement, we wanted to show ourselves and please the public,” Anastasia Shpileva continued. “Here, in Norway, there is a very pleasant atmosphere, the spirit of positive and joy reigns everywhere. competitions to which we will approach with the accumulated experience of performing in the international arena."

1. Polina Tsurskaya - 186.04.
2. Maria Sotskova (both - Russia) - 169.50.

3. Elisabeth Tursynbayeva (Kazakhstan) - 167.88.

Polina Tsurskaya at the end of the awards ceremony told how she managed to disengage from negative thoughts after performing in the short program: “I can’t say that I suffered this medal, but it was very hard for me. After short program I was only fourth. In the free program, it was possible to win only with clean, flawless skating. I remember that before the start I said that you can win only with a cool head. Today I fully felt the correctness of this thought. I thought only about the rental, no extraneous thoughts entered my head. Masha and I were very seriously worried about the failures of the short program, we were tense all evening. On the eve of the Games, we trained quite well. Therefore, we clearly understood - you just need to forget about past failures! Various activities are held in our hotel, so Masha and I took part in them, we even received prizes! They solved puzzles and riddles, answered questions. I just "disconnected" from the fact that I'm fighting for victory and fighting for a place on the podium. I tried to prove to myself - I can, I can skate cleanly.

I realized that you can’t allow yourself to give up slack - you need to be collected in highlights, it is unacceptable to be distracted during the start. And before the short program, I thought about everything. After the short program, the coaches helped me deal with the mistakes, and before the free program they said: “Go and do your job! Sergey Viktorovich praised me after the free program. Eteri has not written anything yet, but I know that this is a matter of a few minutes. Thank you very much to everyone who believed us!

Silver medalist in women's singles, Maria Sotskova noted that the competitions in Norway were the most difficult for her of the season from an emotional point of view: “I am glad that I won a silver medal, but I am not satisfied with my performance. There was a mistake in the short program that unsettled me. After that, I couldn't get myself together. I skated the free program well, but it's still not the result I expected. However, "silver" in this case - a good achievement. I set myself up for four minutes free program so: do everything you can, and then everything will be fine. It was necessary to endure. For me, this start was the most difficult in this season from an emotional point of view - I am absolutely sure of this!

After the first rental, I did not understand what to do next. To be honest, I was under a lot of pressure that these were the Olympic Games. So when I received low scores, was forced to languish in anticipation of the result. I did not understand what place I could count on. It was the worst half hour of my life. I just sat and waited. After each performance, it became easier for me, but every minute was very hard. I was given 116 points, and I understood that this was definitely not enough to win. I saw that the girls skate badly - with mistakes and falls.

I cried almost all the time here, starting with the short program. It was hard for me emotionally to go through all this. At the Games in Norway, I learned for myself main lesson- never give up and fight to the last, without giving up. After a short program, I allowed myself to do it. I will prepare even harder for the World Youth Championship. With this start, I tempered my character "

After the end of the competition, Sofia Tikhonova spoke about her impressions: “The result is normal. A silver medal at the Youth Olympic Games is good. But I couldn't make two jumps at the same level. The first one worked for me, the second one didn't. I know my mistakes. At official training in Lillehammer, she tried to eliminate them. But… Maybe the referees didn't like my landings. Maybe she didn't hold her hand right. Don't know. But I have no one to blame but myself. It was necessary to cleanly work in the second attempt. The victory of Emma Klinec from Slovenia is not a surprise. Ema is already an experienced fighter who has gone through many stages of the World Cup. Klinets didn’t have any serious victories before this start, but she is almost always in the top ten.”
