Ice Hockey World Cup Calendar 2017

On the this moment There is no exact schedule for the 2017 World Championship, but the rules of the competition have long been known. The teams will be divided into two groups, each with 8 teams. They will play their matches in a circle, in total there will be seven fights in the group stage. The best four teams go to the quarterfinal stage according to the principle: the first against the fourth, the second against the third. ice squad»,.

The two teams that took the last places will change their registration and go to the lower division. Only the Danish national team is not threatened with the departure, since the next forum will take place there. After the quarter-finals, two semi-finals follow, their winners will fight for the title of the strongest team.

Losers of the ½ final will play in the consolation final for bronze medals.

Group A(Cologne) will look like this:

  • Germany;
  • Russia;
  • Sweden;
  • Slovakia;
  • Latvia;
  • Italy;
  • Denmark.

AT group B(Paris) will measure their strength:

  • Canada;
  • Finland;
  • Czech;
  • Switzerland;
  • France;
  • Belarus;
  • Norway;
  • Slovenia.

For those who don't know or have forgotten, a hockey match lasts 60 minutes. We recall the phrase from the famous song: great five and goalkeeper. On the ice, as a rule, there are two defenders, three forwards (two of them are extreme, one plays in the center) and a goalkeeper. For gross violations, players will be sent off in the form of a two-minute penalty. Teams play three periods of twenty minutes, in case of not determining the best during this time, the lucky winner will be determined in a five-minute overtime. If it also ends in a draw, then a shootout will await us. Shootouts are the equivalent of a football penalty shootout.

In the playoffs, fans will not see such luxury, as the opponents will play a 20-minute OT if the strongest is not determined in regular time. OT will go until someone scores the long-awaited puck.

Applicants

At the Ice Hockey World Championship, we are waiting for the confrontation of sixteen top teams:

  • Germany

Let's start our acquaintance with the owners - the "German Bundestim". The well-known hockey player Marco Sturm will coach the team. Germany is one of the most experienced teams of the Old World, the Germans are thirteenth in the world ranking. At the world championships, the team was in prizes twice, back in 1932, and also in 1976. Let's call their most recent achievement 4th place on home tournament in 2010, at the same time, a record attendance was set at the championship, in a duel against the USA in Gelsenkirchen, 77 thousand 803 people were present.

The main stars of the team will be players from the National hockey league: goaltender - Thomas Gray (Islanders) with defensemen Korbian Holzer (Arizona) and Christian Ehrhoff (Chicago), as well as team captain Marcel Gotz. As you can see, seven years after the successful performance, the Germans are again returning to the “home walls”.

  • Russia

The Germans will have one of the main "contenders" for success in the group - the Russian team. The Russians won the main trophy 5 times, took silver and bronze medals three times. In the ranking, the team is in second place, in 2016 the “red car” won bronze, having outplayed the Americans, but this cannot be called a great success, since the tournament was held for the Russians in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Head coach Oleg Znark has a huge number of star performers at his disposal, including Columbus and Colorado goalkeepers Alexander Vishnevsky and Semyon Varlamov and some of the best attacking links in the NHL: Alexander Ovechkin (Washington), Pavel Datsyuk (Detroit), Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh) and Vladimir Tarasenko (St. Louis). Fans are always demanding of the national team and in 2017 they are waiting for a repeat of the success of 2014, when the team triumphed.

The Russians will compete in the group stage with American hockey players. The Americans only managed to win the tournament twice in their long history. The last success dates back to 1960. The guys of John Haynes have not taken championship awards for a long time, the last time this happened in 2010, so we are sure that the United States will be hungry for victories at the upcoming World Cup. Particular attention should be paid to Patrick Kane, Zach Parise, Corey Schneider and the top goalkeeper Los Angeles Kings, Jonathan Quick.

  • Sweden

The Swedish national team has reached the Ice Hockey World Championship 67 times. The Swedes are nine-time winners of this tournament, "Tre Krunur" (from Swedish - three crowns) won in 2013 in Stockholm. Sweden is one of the most famous teams, they are in the third position in the ranking. The team includes such stars as: Niklas Backström, Henrik Sedin, Nicholas Krunval and the legendary "man in the mask", Henrik Lundqvist.

  • Canada

The clear favorite of group B, as well as the championship, all analysts and hockey fans will name the Canadian team. The Maple Leaves took the trophy away from Russia in 2016 and will probably not want to betray themselves in 2017 either. In Canada, hockey is the number one sport and most legendary players Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux were honored to have their game numbers immortalized, which means that no one else would wear the red and white colors with the numbers 99 and 66. By the way, it was not until 1976 that professionals began to play for the Canadians. It's scary to imagine how many titles they would have won if they had done it earlier. The team can send a lot of stars to Germany: Sidney Crosby, Corey Parry, Ryan Getzlaf, Steven Stamkos, John Tavares, Jonathan Toews and many others. No wonder many experts argue that Canada can easily use two equivalent compositions at any time.

  • Finland

Another favorite of the tournament is Suomi. The Finns played in the final in 2016 and have one of the most promising and promising squads in the world. This year the Finnish team defeated the Swedes in the final of the Junior World Championship. hockey schools, as well as a well-developed Finnish league, greatly contribute to the progress of the country's youth hockey. Finland two-time champion world (1995,2011), 1% of the country's population are professional hockey players. In the national team, it is worth highlighting the most experienced Miko Koivu and the “collar” Niklas Bekström, both hockey players play overseas. Also left forward Mikael Granlund carries a high risk. Underestimation of the Finns can ruin many teams, because Suomi are famous for their hot temper and intransigence.

  • Czech

Next, let's talk about the Czech team. The Czech Republic has been champion six times. Having replaced the coach, who brought the triumph of 2010, Vladimir Ruzicka, to Vladimir Vuytek, the pattern of the game for the Czechs has not changed much, but they could not pass the quarterfinal stage, stumbling on the Americans. Now the Czechs have a lull with stellar performers, but due to the team spirit, this team is capable of much.

  • France

Another host of the future forum is the French team, which lacks stars from the sky. Hockey is not in the first place among the French and, perhaps, holding competitions of this level will affect the development of this beautiful winter sport. "Le Bleus" (from French - blue) is constantly balancing on the verge of the top division and the bottom, so their main task will be to maintain a residence permit and in the "native land" this is very important to implement.

If there are no sensations, then the teams of Slovakia and Switzerland will be strong middle peasants and “drink the blood” of the leaders, the teams of Latvia, Belarus, Italy, Slovenia, Norway will most likely try to complete local tasks and stay in the top division. The Danes, as mentioned earlier, will not leave the elite.

Youth World Championship

On the Youth Championship World of 2017 there will be many interesting events and it is no secret that the talents who successfully played on it will fall into the main national team. The tournament will take place in Canadian Montreal and Toronto. It will begin on December 26, and end on January 5 of the next year. The world champions in 2016 were Finnish hockey players who beat their peers from Russia. Participation in the tournament in Canada will be:

  • Canada;
  • Finland;
  • Sweden;
  • Russia;
  • Czech;
  • Slovakia;
  • Switzerland;
  • Latvia;
  • Denmark.

Several significant events took place at the 2016 championship. For example, the young star of the Finnish team Patrick Laine was one of the best players"youth team", and then received a hit in the symbolic team of the adult tournament. Swedish goalkeeper Linus Södrström, American defender Zach Werenski, Finns Olli Juolevi, Jesse Pulujärvi and US forward Austin Matthews also performed well in the youth tournament. It is safe to say that the brightest personalities at the winter championship under 20 will appear on the ice of Cologne and Paris.

Well, we went through the most important aspects before the hockey game. It will be a fantastic sight when the strongest masters of the “ice show” take to the ice, millions holding their breath, waiting for the puck from their favorite team.

The 81st Ice Hockey World Championship 2017 will be held immediately in Germany and France. The tournament starts on May 5 and ends on the 21st with the final in Cologne. This tournament will be the third to be held simultaneously in two countries. World championship games will be held in Paris and Cologne. We will tell you in more detail on which arenas and where the championship will take place World Ice Hockey 2017.

Why in two countries

Initially, France and Germany applied separately to host the 2017 Ice Hockey World Championship. However, in 2012, it was decided to join forces and hold a common tournament. Such a joint bid from France and Germany was able, with a clear advantage, to outstrip also the double bid of Latvia and Denmark. The advantage of Germany and France was the existing infrastructure, while in Latvia and Denmark it was necessary to carry out a hasty reconstruction ice arenas.

Germany has already hosted the World Hockey Championship seven times. Germany last hosted the championship in 2010. France has hosted major tournaments four times, but the last time the championship takes place in 1968. All games are scheduled to take place in Cologne at the Lanxess Arena and in Paris at the AccorHotels Arena. The capacity of these modern hockey stadiums is 18.5 and 17 thousand, respectively. Initially, it was planned to hold the games in the Bercy Arena in Paris, with a capacity of 15,000 spectators. However, it was subsequently decided to move the games to the AccorHotels Arena.

The organizers note that more than half of the tickets have already been sold, so there will be no problems with the capacity of the stands. Taking into account the capacity of the ice arenas, it can be argued that the 2017 championship will be a record one in terms of the number of fans who attended the championship games. According to the organizers of the tournament, its holding in France will significantly increase interest in hockey in this country.

Championship regulations

In accordance with the regulations of the tournament, 16 teams will take part in it, which will be divided into 2 groups. Games will be held in a circle, after which the first four teams enter the playoffs. The distribution of teams in the playoffs is standard - the winner of group A plays with the fourth team of group B. The teams that take the last eighth place in their groups are directly relegated to the first division. We only note that in 2018 the championship is scheduled to be held in Denmark, so if the national team of this country takes the last place in the group, then the team from the 7th place in this group will fly to the lower division.

In Cologne, in accordance with the approved schedule of the 2017 Ice Hockey World Championship, 34 games will be held. This city will host Group A matches, two quarter-finals and semi-finals, as well as a final and a third-place game. Paris will host 30 games, including two quarter-finals. The organizers promise to spread the start of the games in the two cities in time, which will significantly increase the television audience of the championship. The distribution into groups is carried out taking into account current rating IIHF.

In 2016, the championship was held in Russia in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Canada confidently won the world championship, having dealt with Finland in the final match. The third place was taken by the Russian team, which beat the United States in the consolation final. In the 2017 championship, the main contenders for the title will also be the Canadians and the Finnish team. The strongest teams can put up the Czechs, Slovaks, Russians and Americans.
