Tournament grid euro. Euro of unequal opportunities. Schedule ⅛ finals

The playoff grid of the European Football Championship turned out to be extremely uneven. In one half, the current Euro finalists - Spain and Italy, the world champions Germans, the championship hosts the French and the ever-promising English will meet, in the other - several sensations of the tournament gathered at once, and Belgium, Croatia and Portugal turned out to be the main contenders for the final.

The path of the strongest

Germany - Slovakia; Italy - Spain; France - Ireland; England - Iceland

The new formula of the European Championship turned out to be truly revolutionary, allowing many debutants and teams of the “second tier” not only to get into the final stage, but also to get good chances for tournament medals. The playoff scheme was determined in advance, and at first glance it seemed fair enough - the first places of the quartets in the 1/8 finals went either to the third, or to two of the six second. The remaining four "vice-champions" of the groups played among themselves.

However, the uneven distribution of the top teams within these groups (group D, where the Spaniards, Croats, Czechs and Turks played, is difficult to compare with the F quartet - Hungary, Iceland, Austria and Portugal, which has weakened in recent years) and several sensations led to an amazing result. The grid was divided into two halves, completely incomparable in terms of comparative strength and historical merits of the teams.

In one part were almost all the favorites of the championship. The current world champion Germany is here. The hosts of the tournament and two-time winners of the Euro French - please. England - the non-winner, but the traditional favorite - is nearby. And the finalists of the previous continental championship, Spain and Italy, will meet at all in the 1/8 finals, in order to then clash with the Germans in the second round (if the Slovaks do not perform a miracle).

However, the “small” teams that got in the way of the strongest - Slovakia, Ireland and Iceland - also seem to be whipping boys only at first glance.

If it will really be difficult for the Slovaks to oppose something to the mighty German machine and all hope is for Marek Gamshik, then the Irish, in the wake of the victory over Italy, may well torment the hosts of the Euro, who did not show a clear game at the first stage.

As for the Iceland-England pair, here, judging by the group round, the Vikings, who showed much more organized and selfless football, may well come out as winners from it. Of course, they may not have enough experience and some motivation (the very access to the Euro was a miracle for the Icelanders, what to say about the 1/8 finals), but Hodgson's wards in such a battle will be even more nervous than in a duel with mastodons like the Germans and Spaniards .

Half grids without champions

Switzerland - Poland; Croatia - Portugal; Wales - Northern Ireland; Hungary - Belgium

The second half of the grid turned out to be much less representative, but also completely unpredictable. None of the eight teams that will compete for the final from this side have won the Euro before. And only two of them participated in the decisive match - Belgium in 1980 and Portugal in 2004.

Knowing how difficult it will be for teams from the other part of the grid to break through, it can be assumed that the Euro may have a new, tenth champion in a row. But who it will be is still a mystery.

Lots of applicants. Firstly, there is a "pair of death" in the 1/8 finals. The Portuguese, taking third place in the weakest group of the tournament, managed to get into the playoffs against the Croats, who heroically outran Spain. By all indications, the checkers, demonstrating bright attacking football, should go through Ronaldo and company, but Portugal traditionally looks stronger in the playoffs than in round-robin tournaments.

Secondly, the stellar generation of Belgian players should have their say. Two years ago, the Belgians lost to Argentina in the quarterfinals of the World Cup, but they came to the Euro already for victory.

And although the initial failure with the Italians somewhat cooled the ardor of the Red Devils, they quickly recovered from the blow, and the relatively light net is now pushing them to the final itself.

Thirdly, Wales became an unexpected favorite, proving to the Russian team and the entire football community that it is not a team of Bale, Ramsey and nine squires, but a close-knit squad in which all players perfectly understand each other and are capable of non-standard solutions.

In the first round, the Welsh will meet with another British team - Northern Ireland, which, although it beat Ukraine, seems to be a noteworthy underdog in this dispute.

Finally, we must not forget about the Polish national team, which did not concede a single goal in group stage and holding a draw in a match with the formidable Germans. She will have to fight with another defensive team - the Swiss, who also have an honorary world record with the top team.

And although the Poles seem a little more representative in terms of composition, the only thing that can be said with certainty is that the battle should turn out to be stubborn and ineffective.

In the event that all the favorites (according to the editors of Gazeta.Ru) win in the first round, we will have extremely interesting quarter-finals that we might never have seen (at least some of them), if the Euro was held in the usual format.

Germany - Spain, France - England, Poland - Croatia, Belgium - Wales ... It's worth seeing.

We present to your attention the second competition of predictions for Euro 2016 - the playoffs! This time you need to guess the outcome of 15 matches.

Whoever guesses more accurately, more and faster, he will win!

There are many prizes in our competition

The more prizes, the better! Therefore, in addition to the standard three winners, we also award every tenth of the TOP-100 best forecasters.

That is, participants who take 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th, 90th and 100th places receive the official ball of the tournament - Adidas Beau Jeu.

Scoring

There are 15 matches in the playoff series, for each of them you are invited to make a prediction - guess the score. Bets are accepted on the result of the match shown in regular time and overtime (excluding penalty shootouts).

The calculation of points for the forecast occurs according to the scheme: the more accurately you guessed, the more you got.

Guessed the exact score - 10 points,
otherwise, if the winner and the goal difference are guessed - 7 points,
otherwise if the winner is guessed - 5 points,
otherwise, if the number of goals scored is guessed - 2 points.

In case of a draw, if the forecast was “3:3”, and the result was “7:7”, then points are given according to the “guessed winner” scheme, that is, 5 points.

Example: as a result of the match "Russia - England" our team won 5:1

Prediction 5:1 will earn 10 points;
Forecast 6:2 - 7 points;
Forecast 2:1 - 5 points;
Forecast 2:4 - 2 points.

Identification of the winner

The one with the most points at the end of the final match will win.

If two or more participants score the same number of points, the winner is the one with the most 10-point results. In case of their equality, the number of results with a lower number of points further down is compared. If the results are exactly the same (which we hope will not happen), the one who made the very first prediction first wins.

You need to make a prediction before the start of the match - betting closes with starting whistle. We accept predictions for three days before the match (with the exception of the first round games, on which you can bet from June 6). Don't be late!

To participate in the competition, you must register on the site or log in with your login. Capable persons, citizens are allowed to participate in the competition Russian Federation who have reached the age of majority and permanently reside on the territory of the Russian Federation. Winners pay all taxes on their own, provided by the current legislation of the Russian Federation when receiving a prize. Prizes are sent by mail within the Russian Federation.

Since the participants of the playoffs have already been decided, the attention of readers and fans is invited to the playoff bracket - the main stage in which the loser leaves the tournament and stops the fight for the European title.

Matches start from the 1/8 final stage - 8 games. The winners advance to the quarterfinals. Next comes the semi-final and the final. The losers in the semi-finals will be awarded bronze medals, the defeated finalist will receive silver medals, and the champion will receive gold medals and the European Cup.

Ironically, the playoff bracket has developed in such a way that the traditional favorites - Germany, Italy, Spain, France and England - will definitely not meet with the notorious before the final " dark horses or outsiders. It's a paradox, but this year the debutants and the teams that returned after a long absence show an excellent level of play, whatever one may say. And traditionally strong teams start to crash. England can’t tune in to the right wave, Germany is worried about the defense, France is confused in the attack, Italy put up a raw reserve, Spain’s tiki-taka fails ... Belgium got into the grid for the “outsiders”, so far not pleasing with a sparkling game (except against Ireland) , and Portugal, which Cristiano Ronaldo only pulled out at the last moment in the playoffs.

So, here are the upcoming matches:

    • June 25, 16:00. Switzerland - Poland. Saint Etienne.
    • June 25, 19:00. Wales - Northern Ireland. Paris.
    • June 25, 22:00. Croatia - Portugal. Lance.
    • June 26, 16:00. France - Ireland. Lyon.
    • June 26, 19:00. Germany - Slovakia. Lille.
    • June 26, 22:00. Hungary - Belgium. Toulouse.
    • June 27, 19:00. Italy - Spain. Saint Denis.
    • June 27, 22:00. England - Iceland. Nice.

We can already say the following about the upcoming fights:

Switzerland and Poland did not reach the Euro playoffs at all, and for the Alpines and Slavs this is already a small success. The well-played Swiss team can give battle to the Polish team led by Robert Lewandowski.

In a duel between Wales and Northern Ireland some of the debutants will be forced to leave the tournament after the first round. In any case, for these teams, reaching the playoffs is already a victory.

Croatia has come to be regarded as the favorite of the tournament according to the fans - against the backdrop of a faded Portugal, it looks more formidable. If Ronaldo and the company do not get together and do not play at least as they did against Hungary, then Ronaldo will be left without medals again.

Everyone has already heard about how France did not let Ireland into the World Cup in South Africa. It is possible that the Irish can kill two birds with one stone - shock the owners, taking revenge on them in full, and crawl out even further.

Germany played in a friendly match with the Slovaks before the Euro and lost 1:3. Although there was a second line-up, it is possible that the first one can falter under the pressure of Marek Hamshik. The central defense of the Germans fails, and the implementation is also lame on both legs.

Hungary has become one of the sensations of the Euro, so it cannot be ruled out that Belgium will have a hard time. The "Golden Generation" needs to prove its worth. And Gabor Kiraly is also on the alert - although he missed two goals from Ronaldo, it's not his fault.

Spain can lay down their powers of the European champion already in the 1/8 finals if del Bosque does not have time to set up the team for the playoffs. Although, taking into account the raw reserve of the Italians, which everyone saw in the match with Ireland, the Spaniards seem to have nothing to fear.

The Icelanders are not a gift for the British, they mocked the Portuguese enough. Moreover, one of them probably knows the English style of the game well. But Marcus Rashford and Jamie Vardy have an historic chance to show they're worth something.

Against the backdrop of the grid, you start to think - would we have a chance if we came out instead of Wales or England? And who would we hit? But the history of the subjunctive mood does not have, and one must prove one's strength not by word, but by deed. Let's just see who really deserves to be the best in this tournament and enjoy the game.
