The story of how a casual game turned into a passion that led to changes in the entire industry.Someone for cherished dream changes himself, someone changes the whole world. The hero of our interview has just the second case: once, in Normandy, picking up a golf club, he realized that it was love at first sight. And the fact that in Russia at that time there were almost no conditions for such a hobby did not stop him at all. He simply made his favorite hobby his life's work - and began to build golf courses.
Oleg Vitalyevich Kustikov heads the board of directors of the Procyon company, which by 2016 had already sold seven golf courses in Russia. By the opening of the new golf season, we asked Oleg Vitalyevich to talk about how to combine work and passion, choose the perfect golf course, and also about what opportunities golfers have in Russia today.
Oleg Vitalyevich, please tell us how your passion for golf started?
It all started in 1999: while on vacation in France, I became interested in an old golf course located near Deauville. The game fascinated me so much that I continued to take lessons until I left home, and upon my return, without hesitation, I became a member of the Moscow Country Club - then it was the only golf club in the country. Since then, my hobby has turned from a favorite hobby into a favorite job. Fortunately, the family shared this passion - everyone plays golf with me! For example, my granddaughter is six and a half years old, and she has been studying with pleasure for a year now.
Perhaps, to make your passion a matter of life is the dream of any of us. But you approached the issue with a special scope - you began to build golf courses!
It was quite justified: I felt that in Russia golf remains an unrealizable dream for many. And since I joined the ranks of fans of this beautiful sport and, at the same time, was engaged in construction, I decided to combine these two areas and find practical application for my hobby.
So our company has mastered a new direction by implementing a variety of golf facilities. We erected fields of all types - strict wastelands, open and forest parks, rogue "links", solved a wide variety of tasks - from design to "turnkey" project management, including tournaments and club life. All this allowed us to gain invaluable experience in this direction.
And then the idea to build the club of your dreams came up?
Yes. By that time, I had a clear idea of what an ideal golf club should be: with a world-class championship course, convenient infrastructure and high level service. But most importantly, it should be accessible to a wider range of golf enthusiasts. From this idea, work began on the Links National Golf Resort project, which includes the Links National Golf Club and Villa Links cottage village.
How is this project different from others you've worked on before?
First of all, the fact that in this project we acted both as customers and developers. Such a multifaceted role in the implementation of a new idea allowed us to use the company's resources as efficiently as possible and really build, in our opinion, an ideal golf club.
Tell us how you chose the place?
Impeccable ecology, landscape and species characteristics were the main criteria. Links National is located in an environmentally friendly Dmitrovsky district suburbs. We even have a black grouse, a bird that is incredibly picky about the environment, it is the black grouse that is depicted on the club's logo.
Once here, in part of the Dmitrov-Klinskaya ridge, the glacier created a very unusual relief - with thirty-meter elevation changes. We supplemented the “work” of nature to make the terrain really ideal for the game: we moved more than 2 million cubic meters of soil, laid drainage, and an irrigation system. Thus, the project was the result of the joint work of nature and man.
How do you evaluate the work done? Do you like the result?
Yes, I am very satisfied and love this place very much, although I have seen many golf projects around the world. Our golf architect has created a dynamic modern design that still respects all the laws of the old Scottish lynx style. The course turned out "with character" - it challenges even experienced golfers, but beginners will also like it.
In May, we opened the third season. As soon as the snow melted, we visited the field and breathed a sigh of relief - it overwintered perfectly! In our area it is very important point, golfers will understand me.
Links National Golf Club is an open type club. You just need to pay an annual membership fee of 75,000 rubles - the amount is comparable, perhaps, with the cost of a subscription to a good fitness center. You can also buy a one-time game (green fee). However, we strictly monitor the observance of golf etiquette and rules. The openness of the club should not negate the sense of privilege that is directly associated with golf culture.
Tell me, what, in principle, gives a person golf, in addition to belonging to a special community?
Oh, it seems to me that golf brings up a harmonious personality! Firstly, golf develops strategic thinking, it is a smart sport. The passage of each hole and the field as a whole is a serious analytical task, built on the assessment of one's own capabilities and those of the opponent in the proposed landscape and natural conditions. Golfers spend a lot of time outdoors, walking a lot, and this is a good physical aerobic exercise that helps build endurance and improve health. In addition, during the practice of strikes, coordination improves. Well, let's not forget about what a great pastime it is in a circle of like-minded people. It is both a very individual and team sport. Convinced?
Perhaps yes! Can everyone play golf? What should a novice player do?
First, you should be patient - as in any sport, golf does not work all at once! Regular exercise will help you develop correct technique games, and then the first long-awaited results will appear. And along with them - a real interest, a genuine passion for golf and a desire to play constantly. It's no secret that golfers are, in a good way, addicts, but it's one of the best addictions I know.
But if golf is an addiction, how do you force yourself to leave the course?
You may not leave! (laughs) Real fans often buy houses on the grounds of golf clubs. This is an established global practice. We also have such an option - right next to the field we are building Villa Links cottage village. So "living right on the course" is no longer a pipe dream of golf fans, but a real possibility.
It must be great to be in the neighborhood only with your like-minded people - the same golf fans as you yourself?
Certainly! And we see it in our customers and, concurrently, members of the club. Although among the buyers of golf real estate there are not only fans of this sport, but also simply connoisseurs of the aesthetics of endless green fields and unity with nature. Our Villa Links project is based on the format of an active and fulfilling life. On the territory of the village are being built tennis courts, football field, volleyball and basketball courts, bicycle and Treadmills. There is a lake with spring water, so you can also do fishing. "Production" will be prepared for you with pleasure in the club restaurant. We also set up a vegetable garden where we grow organic vegetables.
Which countries are famous now good conditions for playing golf? And what are the prospects for golf tourism in Russia?
Perhaps the United States remains the leader today, Asia has a strong golf industry. For example, in Japan, on the small island of Hokkaido alone, there are as many as 134 golf courses! Well, of course, traditionally Europe is the birthplace of golf. In Russia, golf tourism is just developing, but I am sure that soon we will be able to compete with other countries. For example, we recently opened a golf club in Yekaterinburg - Pine Creek Golf Resort, this is the only such project in the Urals. Dark side of the hole

Not a day without golf
The 2017 golf season has ended in the Urals, and its results were summed up in the only golf club in the Sverdlovsk region - Pine Creek Golf Resort. The past season, of course, will be remembered for its richness - several major tournaments were held in the region at once, two of which were of an international level. These are Kramski Cup and Innoprom Golf Challenge.
Moreover, in the tournament, which was held within the framework of sports program INNOPROM-2017, several titled golfers participated at once, among which was the star of this sport - Michael Campbell, who in 2005 defeated the most famous golfer of our time, Tiger Woods.
The director of PineCreekGolfClub has created the only golf course in the Urals that meets world standards. Having hardly celebrated its own opening, the club regularly gathers golf professionals and amateurs for tournaments not only from Yekaterinburg, but also from nearby large cities.
Why did you choose this area?
The place was chosen according to several parameters. Geography - a convenient location between two large cities, with convenient interchanges and check-in. Climate - the air temperature here is always about five degrees higher than in the city. Finally, beauty and ecology - this is one of the cleanest places in the region, and there are unique landscapes here. Proximity to Yekaterinburg was important, as to the capital of the Urals, where a large number of people with a high income level, a modern outlook on life, ready for new types of recreation live.
What is the Ural Golf Club?
First of all, this is an eighteen-hole world-class championship golf course, training grounds for practicing long-range strike and hitting accuracy from a short distance: drivinggrange, chipping and puttinggreen. In addition, we have a club house, which has locker rooms with a sauna and a hammam, a summer terrace, a restaurant, a children's room, a store for specialized golf goods, and lockers for inventory. So that the participants would not be distracted from the game, a tent of a summer snack bar was placed next to the training field. In the near future we are thinking of starting the construction of private real estate.
You've just opened and all the talk in town seemed to be about that. Did your expectations from the event come true?
Yes, and for us it was unforgettable! The opening was attended by about six hundred people, eighty-eight took part in the golf tournament, these are players from Yekaterinburg, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk, Moscow. In addition to the games, there were many other "activities" - helicopter rides, various master classes, a performance by the world-famous golf showman David Edwards.
What kind of audience do you have?
We are pleased that the club is chosen as a place to relax - in fact, it is a comfortable trip to nature. Of course, those who play golf are mostly representatives of the business elite of the city, people who need peace and solitude. And the secular public began to appear: people who love everything new from their standard of living.
That is, there is an opportunity to learn how to play? Or is the club designed only for those who already know something?
Of course, you can learn how to play, moreover, this is a separate area of our activity. For beginners in our golf academy developed by instructors special programs, and the presence necessary equipment allows you not to immediately acquire equipment, but first try, understand what golf is.
The game season is coming to an end. What are you planning to do in winter?
We are thinking of organizing on the territory the possibility of practicing alternative sports - skiing, skating, winter golf. We will build a children's town, and in the club house we will organize corporate parties, client or private events.
How popular is golf in the Urals, in Russia, in the world? What contribution does your club make to the popularization of golf?
Of course, in this regard, Russia still lags behind Europe, and even more so from America, where golf is one of the most popular and beloved sports and recreation. But every year there are more and more connoisseurs of the elite game in Russia. In Moscow, of course, where there are more than a dozen golf clubs and some of them have existed for more than a decade, they have already managed to instill a culture of the game. In the Urals, Pine Creek Golf Club is the first golf club created in accordance with world standards, so people are not yet so familiar with this game, but we are sure that with each season there will be more and more connoisseurs.
