Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Program

"Extreme Transformation: The Weight Loss Program" documented how eight courageous overweight heroes managed to completely change their appearance. They decided to lose half their weight within a year without harming their health.

From this program, I got hooked on all these programs. For a year, very fat people, under the guidance of a coach, lose 100 kilograms or more. The programs are individual, but the approach is the same: the year is divided into semesters, for each of them a goal is set (to lose weight by so much), if it works out, then the patient receives a dream come true as an encouragement (parachute jump, song or something else).

At the end of the year, there will be a final weigh-in, to which all relatives and relatives are invited. Be sure to include a “before” photo in order to evaluate the “after” results in contrast. Very cool transmission! It's been a few seasons and I'd love to watch more. I signed up on Facebook for the darling trainer Chris Powell and his wife (yes, she helps him in almost every episode). Their slender photos are good motivators!

I am losing weight

The project "I'm losing weight!" is dedicated to the struggle of a person with excess weight and invites the heroes to change their lives for the better, starting with themselves and taking care of their appearance.

Each release of the project is a story of the transformation of one of the participants, already at the end of which the audience will find out whether the hero managed to make his dream come true or at least come closer to fulfilling his desire.

In the fourth season, heroes are expected unique techniques weight loss! Indeed, for some, to put on a fashionable swimsuit, it is enough to lose a couple of kilograms, while for others, an operation to reduce the volume of the stomach is vital.

Viewers will learn about the bread diet and the special diet for the sweet tooth, as well as what healthy fast food is, what foods age us, and how you can lose three kilograms a week on red fish.

The team of the best nutritionists of the country takes part in the project. They have thousands of clients and tons of dropped kilograms! Program trainer Yulia Kostyushkina will explain why a diet without sports is a waste of time and nerves. Chef Kirill Golikov (he fed Madonna herself with his diet cutlets!) will clearly show how to reduce the calorie content of your favorite dishes. And the stars - Anastasia Volochkova, Mitya Fomin, Nikita Presnyakov - will not only tell the secrets of their attractiveness, but will also help our heroes gain confidence in themselves.

Live - Record weight loss

The famous figure skater of the Russian national team is actually dying of hunger. Six months ago, Yulia Antipova successfully performed at the World Championships in figure skating, took first place in international tournaments she was predicted for the future Olympic champion, but today she is in the hospital with severe anorexia. The girl weighs only 25 kilograms.

Relatives say that such deadly weight loss is the result of hard training. Journalist Inessa Rasskazova was one of the first to sound the alarm about the state of health of the champion, and conducted her own investigation. Who brought Julia to anorexia? Inessa Rasskazova in the studio "Live".

Lose excess weight

Coach Jesse Povelka uses a lot of the same techniques as Chris Powell. The show airs in England and Australia.

Wanted - lost weight

How do American teenagers lose weight. They are given rather strict conditions - to lose 20, 30 kg in 70 or 90 days (usually this is the summer before college). And everyone succeeds!

Of course, I do not welcome this approach to sudden weight loss, but the result is “obvious and on the stomach” - everyone is noticeably slimmer! Probably, a young organism can endure such a regimen without serious consequences for health.

Of course, their programs are not revealed to the audience, but you can guess approximately: healthy eating, lots of greens, counting proteins, most often no more than 1000 calories per day; sports daily. In one of the recently watched episodes, the girl Maya worked out for 10 hours in the gym, and her obligatory norm was to shake 7000 calories.

I weigh 300 kilograms

How do people with "paranormal" weight lose weight. They are generally faced with the question of survival. The horrifying spectacle of extra pounds and operations to remove part of the stomach shows on real examples what you can’t bring yourself to.

Who slams the refrigerator door

Hidden cameras are installed in the hero’s house, detectives are watching him - all this in order to clearly show the person that his problems with being overweight are associated exclusively with overeating. And they show it in a very accessible and understandable way.

Principles healthy eating are mentioned in passing, the main thing here is to show that a person himself does not notice how much he eats. What is worth only a table packed to the eyeballs with harmful foods eaten in a week! I was impressed by this program, especially one of the episodes where a woman could not figure out why she was gaining weight, and after filming she was shown that only on snacks and food samples while cooking for her relatives she gained up to 700 calories!

zaryadka.guru

About a year and a half ago, when we first launched our site, I talked with an old friend of mine - an experienced television producer. We discussed the possibility of creating a TV show about weight loss in accordance with the principles of the LCHF. At first, my friend was seriously interested in the idea, but when I explained to her in more detail how the LCHF works and what needs to be done to lose weight, she rejected it as not suitable for the reality show format. “You see,” she explained to me, “everything is too easy and simple for you - you ate as much as you want, all kinds of delicious natural food and you walk all day full and satisfied. Where is the suffering? Where is the intrigue? She cited the most popular weight loss show in the world, Biggest Loser, as an example to follow: “Look how they are tortured there, what torments the participants have to go through on the way to their cherished goal, how they suffer, how they cry, how they break down one by one and fly out of the program - this is what is interesting for viewers who watch the program, sitting comfortably on the couch, and not how people eat scrambled eggs and bacon for their pleasure.

This story very well reflects popular ideas about the process of losing weight: through hardships to the stars, no pain - no gain. And when an analogue of Biggest Loser appeared in Russia - the show "Weighted People" on STS, then it was all about the same thing: about overcoming oneself through pain and tears, through extreme loads, "through I can't." “I don’t feel sorry for you a bit, don’t feel sorry for yourself,” the coach harshly pronounces to the exhausted participants on the simulators, whose reaction to ever-increasing physical exertion is best expressed by the words: “It’s just hell!” In the American version, it sounds even tougher: “I don’t care if you die on this floor now, it’s better to die, but look beautiful.” In general, there is something to see.

The methodology for all these programs is quite simple: heavy, back-breaking physical activity combined with severe calorie restriction. In fact, this is the “concentration camp method”. And it works: the participants of the show lose weight, turning before the eyes of viewers from shapeless fat men into fit athletes. In theory, this should serve as an excellent motivator and proof that nothing is impossible. At least if you are ready to suffer...

But lately, more and more publications have appeared telling about what is happening behind the scenes of the program and how the life of the participants develops after the completion of filming. And this is no longer a success story.

13 out of 14 contestants on the show got fat again

Information that the former participants of the show over time again gaining the weight lost with such difficulty has been leaked to the press before. But now it can be considered a scientifically proven fact. In early May, The New York Times published a long article about the results of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study published in the journal Obesity. Scientists have been watching 14 former participants of the show for 6 years. Only one of them managed to keep his form at the level of the final of the program. 13 former participants have gained significant weight over the years, and five have returned to the figure before the start of weight loss, or even exceeded it. The “hospital average” numbers look like this:

  • Weight at the start of the show: 148.9 kg
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) at the start of the show: 49.5
  • Weight in the final of the show: 90.6 kg
  • BMI at show final: 30.2
  • Weight loss during the show: 58.3 kg
  • Weight 6 years after the show: 131.6 kg
  • BMI 6 years after show: 43.8
  • Weight gain over 6 years: 41 kg

Of course, it is better to weigh 131.6 kg than 148.9 kg, and some experts even call such results a success - after all, the former participants of the show managed to maintain an average weight loss of 11.9%, while most cannot. keep 10%. But, on the other hand, 131.6 kg is also a lot, and according to the classification of the same NIH, a BMI above 40 means extreme, or morbid, obesity. It is unlikely that Biggest Loser participants tortured themselves in order to remain in this category. And they have not become lazy: their average level of physical activity has not changed much.

What went wrong? Why did almost none of the participants manage to consolidate the result obtained with such difficulty? Scientists believe that the problem is in the serious metabolic changes that have occurred with the participants in the program.

Decreased metabolism is the first reason for weight gain

The basic level of metabolism (Resting Metabolic Rate, RMR) is the amount of energy consumed by the body at rest to maintain its own vital functions. At the start of the program, the participants' RMR was about normal for their weight. By the finals, it dropped significantly - below what should have corresponded to their new weight. But this is normal - the decrease in basal metabolic rate as a result of fasting and exercise is a well-known fact. But what really surprised the scientists was that over the following years, their metabolism not only did not recover, but even slowed down even more. And even when the former contestants of the show regained their forty-odd kilos, their basal metabolism was somewhat lower than at the time the show ended. On average, six years later, their RMR was 700 kcal/day lower than at the start of the show and 500 kcal/day lower than what people of their weight should be. In practice, this means that their body burns much less energy at rest than it should, which means that a much larger part of the calories is stored “in reserve”.

Season 8 winner 46-year-old Danny Cahill - absolute champion Biggest Loser for the entire existence of the program: he managed to lose as much as 108 kilograms in 7 months. His weight has more than halved: from 191 to 86.6 kilograms. “I got my life back. I feel like a million dollars!" Danny announced at the end. In order to achieve such results, he set himself the goal of achieving a daily deficit of 3,500 kcal, which should have led him to lose a pound of fat per day. He had to quit his job and turn many hours of grueling training into his main occupation.

After the end of the show, Danny Cahill turned into a world-class celebrity and began to successful career motivational speaker. It would seem, who, no matter how he, should struggle with all his might to maintain the achieved result? But over the past six years, Danny has regained 47 kilograms, and now weighs 133.8 kg with a height of 180 cm. Danny had to end his career as a speaker and return to his main job as a surveyor. At the same time, his body consumes so much less energy that in order to simply keep his weight constant, he must consume 800 kcal per day less than a typical man with the same weight. “All my friends drink beer without adding much weight,” says Danny Cahill, “as soon as I started drinking beer, I immediately added 9 kilograms. I thought - something is wrong here, something is wrong with my body. ”

In an even worse situation was Sean Elgair, a 36-year-old pastor from North Carolina. During the show, he managed to reduce his weight from 201 to 131 kg. Now he weighs 204 kg and spends 458 kcal less than the norm per day. "I feel like I've been given a life sentence," Sean says.

Hormonal changes are the second reason for weight gain

A slowdown in metabolism is not the only consequence of extreme weight loss. Former contestants of the show have to constantly fight bouts of uncontrollable hunger and keep themselves from compulsive overeating. “Sometimes I open a bag of chips and think, I’ll eat five things,” says Danny Cahill, “and suddenly an eclipse comes over me, I devour the whole bag, and then I sit and think – what have I done?” Erin Egbert, the only participant in the study, who managed to avoid weight gain, despite slowing down her metabolism by 552 kcal per day, faces similar problems. “People don’t understand that a treat is like a drug,” she says. “A couple of treats can easily turn into a three-day binge, and that’s something I have to fight all the time.”

Scientists believe that the main reason for this behavior is a chronic decrease in the level of leptin, a hormone responsible for achieving a feeling of satiety. All contestants started the show with normal leptin levels. By the end, they had almost no of this hormone left, which made them feel continuous hunger. Over time, along with the pounds, leptin returned, but only to about 60% of the level they had before participating in the Biggest Loser, which explains their constant urge to eat something.

The fact that extreme methods of weight loss negatively affect the level of leptin is also known from earlier studies. In 2014, scientists compared the performance of Biggest Loser participants with patients who had undergone gastric bypass surgery. Both groups lost about the same weight, but the study found that reality show participants had leptin levels five times lower than surgical patients. In addition, the Biggest Loser methods led to a stronger slowdown in metabolism.

Leptin is not the only hormone responsible for feeling full. In 2011, Australian scientists conducted a study in which 50 overweight men and women went through a 9-week period of an extremely low-calorie diet - 550 kcal per day. A year later, they still had lower levels of five hormones that regulate feelings of hunger, and increased levels of the hormone that makes us overeat. Participants reported increased appetite.

It seems that our body is trying with all its might to regain its initial weight after a sharp weight loss, saving energy on its own vital activity, and sending hormonal signals to the brain that make us eat more.

Dangerous weight loss methods

Biggest Loser's problems are not limited to the return of the weight of former members. Recent media coverage suggests that reality TV techniques were far more extreme and less legal than previously thought. So, an article published a few days ago in the New York Post talks about how coaches and doctors gave the show participants various medications, incl. and forbidden, to enhance weight loss. Everything was used - from diuretics, leading to severe dehydration, to amphetamines. In order to expel as much moisture from the body as possible, the participants were forced to spin exercise bikes in the steam room or perform grueling exercises in several layers of clothing. “I threw up every day,” says season 2 contestant Suzanne Mendonka. "[Coach] Bob Harper tells people that vomiting is good, that they should vomit so they lose more calories."

Other participants talk about severe psychological pressure from coaches, about numerous injuries, menstrual irregularities, thyroid problems, hair loss, joint pain and other serious health problems.

In addition, the diet was much more stringent than officially indicated. The participants of the show admit that they were instructed by management to tell the press that they were following official recommendations and consuming 1500 kcal per day, but urged them to reduce their real consumption to 800 kcal or even lower. But the most surprising thing is that some of the participants in the show were forced to gain more weight before the start of the season in order to make their further weight loss more spectacular.

The British newspaper The Guardian chronicles the physically and psychologically brutal methods of the world's most popular and influential weight loss reality show in an article with the eloquent headline: "It's a miracle no one has died yet."

Does reality TV about weight loss have a future?

The prospects for Biggest Loser seem rather bleak right now. Ratings have been falling in recent years, criticism in the media has become increasingly harsh, and NBC has not yet confirmed the launch of the next 18th season. The former participants and scientists themselves are calling for the termination of the reality show.

As Dr. Yoni Friedhoff of the University of Ottawa says, “Biggest Loser condemns participants to either a lifetime of superhuman efforts to lose weight, or to regain excess weight. The conclusion from this is this: if you are ready to kill yourself to lose weight physical activity and diet, then you kill your metabolism at the same time.

As for "Weighted People" - a localized Russian version Biggest Loser - so far I have not been able to find a single critical article on this topic in RuNet. The reality show was nominated for the TEFI award as the best entertainment (!) Program and the next season is being shown right now on STS, contributing to the spread of unrealistic and health-threatening ideas about weight loss methods.

Although the reality show isn't really the problem, it's just an extreme manifestation of popular beliefs about the "correct" methods of losing weight: eat less and move more. Difficult? We must endure! It is customary to blame the owners of extra pounds themselves for being overweight - supposedly it is their laziness and gluttony that are deposited in the form of fat folds on the sides, and in order to get rid of them, you will have to suffer and suffer for your deadly sins. However, a growing body of scientific evidence indicates that this path is a dead end and does not provide long-term results. And if something is worth changing, it’s not just the format of a television show, but the very ideas of where excess weight comes from and how you need to change your lifestyle in order to get rid of it irrevocably and without irreversible health consequences.

And when an analogue of Biggest Loser appeared in Russia - the show "Weighted People" on STS, then it was all about the same thing: about overcoming oneself through pain and tears, through extreme loads, "through I can't." “I don’t feel sorry for you a bit, don’t feel sorry for yourself” - tough pronounces coach to the exhausted participants on the simulators, whose reaction to ever-increasing physical exertion is best expressed by the words: “It’s just hell!” In the American version, this sounds even harsher: “I don’t care if you die on this floor now, it’s better to die, but look beautiful.” In general, there is something to see.

In early May, The New York Times published a long story about the results of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study published in the journal Obesity.

Danny Cahill at the beginning and end of the show

The winner of the eighth season, 46-year-old Danny Cahill, is the absolute champion of the Biggest Loser for the entire existence of the program: he managed to lose as much as 108 kilograms in 7 months.

After the end of the show, Danny Cahill turned into a world-class celebrity and began a very successful career as a motivational speaker. ”

Sean Elgair at the beginning and end of the show
